ARN Regional (formerly Grant Broadcasters)

I just listen to a song from 1966, it was in the retro countdown of Stevie Wonder. So at least they will play some 60s tunes like SWR do from time to time even over the day.

Hinksy is a busy man in SE QLD:

Is there much other networking between Grants stations?

Plenty of voice tracking throughout the Queensland stations.

  • Rob Kidd - Star 101.9 Mackay breakfast, 4CC Gladstone mornings
  • Michael J Bailey - 4RO Rockhampton breakfast, 4MK Mackay afternoons
  • Al Doblo - Zinc 96.1 Gympie breakfast, 4CA Cairns drive
  • Juanita - Star 102.7 Cairns afternoons, Star 106.3 Townsville mornings
  • Karina - Power 100 Townsville mornings, 4CC Gladstone afternoons

A few (if not all) of the Power FM stations in NSW are taking a networked afternoons show from Wollongong at the moment too

Wow. Quite surprising for a network that boasts its level of localism (although this is nothing compared to SCA & BOG).

2ST in Nowra are on the hunt for a new breakfast personality: https://radioinfo.com.au/jobs/2st-breakfast-personality

It’s unclear on whether it’s a replacement for Graeme Day (who comes out of its Bowral studio) or that the station is back to having separate breakfast shows for Shoalhaven & Southern Highlands.

Also, it’s worth noting in the job ad that former Star 104.5 & 2GO presenter, Mandy Coolen, is now the Content Director for 2ST/Power FM.

Going by the ad they mention 2ST being a part of the Shoalhaven, and an opportunity to live in the area, so my guess it is for 999 soon to become 91.7 2ST.

The plan probably is for the new breakfast show to coincide with the switch to fm, and Grahame Day going back to doing the Highlands Breakfast only.

Kix Country is dead in Canberra on DAB+ and 97.5 FM. Does anyone monitor these stations? In the past My Canberra has been dead for extended periods.

Elsewhere, Grant’s FM stations in NSW (Wave FM & Power FM’s) are now doing the Hot 20 at 4-6pm Saturdays.

Also, Wave FM and Power FM in Bega/Batemans Bay & Muswellbrook (as well as Hitz Bundaberg & Star QLD, which didn’t mention it on their respective websites) are now doing the “20 Song Music Marathon” from 9am weekdays, as well as having “Throwback Lunch” at Midday, which covers the 80s, 90s & 00s, replacing an ‘all 90s’ hour. In the case of Wave FM, “Throwback Lunch” now goes head-to-head with a similar program on i98 called “Old School Anthems”, which the latter also play an occasional 70s track, which is something that Wave FM doesn’t do these days.

This is good news, and exactly what Grant needs to do after SCA announced their networked breakfasts last week (even though SCA aren’t in the Sunny Coast market)

I should expect they will push a ‘live & local’ esque branding to their QLD stations like Star & Hot.

Also interesting to note that this is definitely the biggest market with all commercials broadcasting a live & local drive show.

And that’s thanks to EON being the first to invest with Todd & Sami on Mix and now a local team on Sea.

EON made the first investment and that’s the biggest advance all markets need, they need a licensee to make the first investment of reinstating local programming.

All commercial stations broadcasting a local drive show is the bare minimum of what revenue can support in a market the size of the Sunshine Coast. Many other markets could also support similar.

News could also be improved on the Sunshine Coast, especially in the afternoons. EON yet to add an afternoon news shift and Grant’s bulletins are one of many produced from Maroochydore for stations across up the coastline, light on local detail.

It’s great that Grant are increasing local programming and goes some way towards when Hot 91 had it’s own night shift and Zinc had a specific, locally produced log 24/7. This ended soon after Ronnie Stanton moved to Canada the first time and Prime realised they weren’t too keen on radio and began to cut back.
