Running over six months, readers who collect 20 tokens from the purchase of any Are Media magazines sold at newsagencies and supermarkets across Australia, can be in the running to walk away with the top prize.

Magazine shoppers can enter multiple times with all complete entries going into the draw. One shopper will be in contention to play for a million dollars, with a guarantee of taking home $10,000. In addition there is an opportunity to win $100 instantly each day.

Didn’t they run the same competition last year or the year before?

Not sure where to put this, but here we go:

Monthly Australian movie magazine - EMPIRE AUS- ceased publication a little over a year ago. The magazine was an “Are Media” magazine. There was no issue of the magazine here for a while. But in recent months, the UK version of Empire (not by Are Media) started appearing in some newsagents. Which got me thinking - why did our version fold? And since the UK version is here, surely we can have our own version appear again at some capacity - even if it is a bi-monthly mag or have the odd special mag here and there.

It’s probably because they couldn’t attract enough local advertisers to publish a local version. Same reason why a lot of other Australian titles like GQ Australia folded. The pandemic was a tipping point for an already struggling industry.

As @JBar mentioned - same as any publication shutting down. Probably not making enough versus outgoings (wage bill, other production costs, printing). Even producing them less regularly still has staffing costs and the like.
You’re probably losing some Aussie film features but a lot of the content was imported (and tweaked occasionally) from the UK anyway which always left the magazine rather precarious (I stopped buying it around 2016).

Yeah, i kind of gathered that the magazine was probably not making enough versus the outgoings. But was worth a shot in asking. lol.

To be honest - our version of Empire is not much different to the UK version anyway. Just less Aussie film features, the odd Aussie tv series article in the dvd section is gone and the one page competition section is now the uk version. So i shouldnt complain too much. At least there is a substitute mag like the uk one there on the stands.
