The 963AM transmitter has been switched off! & of course I recorded it, in my 2014 Ford Focus, I couldn’t work at first why the transmitter wasn’t turned off until 11:04am, then I realised the clock in the car was a few minutes fast lol!
Noice! They should have switched it off at 10:03am… 63 minutes past 9!
Nope, 905 (90.5) would have been better…to ram home the point of the FM conversion!
9:05 should have been the time they switched over from AM to FM
Sad day as another AM service falls silent
It’s been a year and a half since the GN conversion. I met someone the other day in Bungendore that wondered where 2GN had gone. Luckily for him he ran into the @dxnerd
Not all heroes wear capes. All hail the dxnerd!
How do you know he doesn’t wear a cape? (or undies on the outside for that matter).
But seriously @dxnerd, has there been anymore whispers about Braidwood relays for GN and Eagle yet?
They approached us a while back (last year, I think) about sharing infrastructure on Mt. Gillamatong- but we haven’t heard anything since. So I’d say it’s not a priority for them. Braidwood is smaller than Crookwell and not as economically linked to Goulburn either (most in Braidwood go to either Canberra or Batemans Bay for high end services).
Actually rather then Goulburn it would make more sense to have 2BA on the frequency currently occupied by 2PNN, and 2EC and Power fm on the other proposed frequencies, considering Braidwood is closer to the Bega LA then it is to Goulburn.
And that Braidwood should be part of the Bega/Batemans Bay commercial radio licence area, and thus be in line to get 2EC/Power relays instead of GNFM/Eagle.
I was looking at a map & thinking it would be slightly quicker or easier drive for Braidwood residents to Canberra than Batemans Bay wouldn’t it?
Relay for Braidwood from 2GN would be an expensive investment for such a small population & considering capital returns etc, can’t see the sense in it.
Is a wonder the local population haven’t considered some self help radio licences for (if desired) commercial/ABC services with help from local council.
Meanwhile Braidwood FM happily filling the FM broadcast transmission void for the community.
The council has a self help relay of News Radio in Braidwood going by the ACMA registry.
ABC Illawarra does weather for Braidwood, but assuming like 2BA the signal would be very weak in Braidwood.
The strongest fm signals are from Canberra but they would be Rural Grade at best.
I still think extending Batemans Bay / Bega into Braidwood would be the best option, but this would still be difficult / expensive if a decent off air signal is not receivable from the top of Mt Gillamatong.
Yeah most people go to Canberra/Queanbeyan for services but I’ve met a few who go to Batemans Bay for stuff. I agree it’s a pig of a drive down the mountain, especially with the frequent roadworks which usually add 5-10 minutes to the trip. Even between Bungendore and Braidwood there are often delays.
Braidwood is geographically part of the Southern Tablelands, though at one stage was included in the South Coast weather district. Parts of the Braidwood area such as Araluen are more South Coast than Southern Tablelands, though. Goulburn is the main centre for the Southern Tablelands and so that’s probably why Braidwood is lumped into Goulburn RA1…but I agree it’s a bit of an anomaly. There is a bit of connection between Goulburn and Braidwood though (a Goulburn club is a sponsor of Braidwood FM) and there’s also links between Braidwood and Tarago.
Yes 100.3 Braidwood initially relayed NewsRadio but the feed was changed to 666. 2BA 103.5 and 2ILA 97.3 are there but very patchy in town.
Yeah I found reception pretty rural grade in Braidwood for the commercial stations. A bit left field maybe a dab repeater from Canberra would work just to cover the township. Might be too expensive to install.
Licence Area would probably need to be changed since only Goulburn is licensed to serve Braidwood.
Yep, even half of Bungendore is outside the Canberra commercial radio licence area.
Canberra DAB is available direct in certain parts of Braidwood; 100.3 takes its feed off 666 DAB (I think at my suggestion- they were relaying directly off AM originally!)
Only downside of using DAB is that it doesn’t have any sport content, that’s on ABC Sport. So it’s not exactly the same as 666.
True yeah just get the feeling the citizens of Braidwood are more associated to radio from Canberra rather than Goulburn. Like it is ABC from Canberra and not Goulburn (which I think is ABC Illawarra) or ABC south coast.
