AM To FM Conversions

100.7 was going to be the original Triple J Canberra frequency back in 1989, but i think the potential for interference to/from WIN-4 put the kybosh on that.

If there’s a DAB+ repeater then do you even need FM repeaters?

Well if you use that logic, you could argue that there shouldn’t be high power versions of both either.

The Mudgee LAP Variation, which includes the FM conversion of 2MG, has been finalised by ACMA.

The 101.5 Kandos translator (250 w) escaped my attention last time.

Of course, this is no more than an exercise in paper shuffling and leaves us none the wiser as to when 2MG FM (MG FM?) will actually commence.

Most Caralis stations have converted to FM reasonably quickly thus far though, with the notable execption of 2AD.

I think they’ll retain the 2MG callsign on FM… probably just ID as 97.1 2MG.

I heard a ad during Ewan for Breakfast this morning on 963 Triple M Limestone Coast, that they will be converting to the FM frequency of 90.5FM on June 8th.

Nothing on the ACMA radcom database yet regarding 90.5 for Mt Gambier.

Do they keep the old callsign or are they still required to change to a 3 letter callsign?

They can go either way… it doesn’t HAVE to be 3 letters.

Some have kept their 2 letter call sign eg. 2RE on 88.9 in Taree, but 2GN Goulburn changed to 2GBN when they moved to 107.7.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we don’t see it on Radcom until the week they change over.

I see…

I’d go with the phonetic sound if you’re keeping the old callsign for branding.

Like if 2NM moves to FM, you’d go 2ENM- EN sounds like N.

Personally, I would rather they all adopt the 3 letter call sign when on FM… to make it a bit easier to differentiate between AM and FM stations.

Legally, yes, move to the 3 letter callsigns. But on air, I think there is something to be said for keeping some continunity.

In the Muswellbrook example, I’d be taking advantage of the 981 numbers and moving Power FM to a new frequency with the same TX parameters if possible, and putting 2NM FM on 98.1.

There’s 2UUL (Wave FM/2WL), 2UUS (2WS) and 2WFM (KIIS/2UW). Though you can understand why 2UW (or UW) FM was never considered…it hardly rolls off the tongue like WS FM.

2WEB is an AM station that was issued a three letter callsign. According to Bruce Carty this was simply an administrative error. They presumably should have been 2WB (Western Broadcasters).

I’ll be interested to see where 2NM FM ends up … my guess is 98.9… means moving the Glendell mining TX from 99.1 to somewhere else (if still needed since it’s already pretty close to Mt Arthur).

Move Power FM to 98.9 and put 2NM on 98.1. I’d be pushing that to make the transition easier.

That might be too expensive, having to redo Power FM logos etc and might confuse listeners (particularly if they move at the same time).

I think 92.5 would be another contender for 2NM. Yes, that frequency is used by ABC Central Coast, but then again, 98.1 is used by ABC Newsradio in Gosford, which has the same technical specs as ABC Central Coast.

It would be great if/when 2NM finally converts to FM, given that the other ARN Regional stations in NSW (2ST & 2EC) have converted to FM, leaving 2NM as the odd one out.

92.5 would probably be the best option if you don’t want to dick around with the mining relays. Though the situation with 98.1 is hardly ideal and is purely as a result of the NBN3 logjam.
