Well played to 2XL for adding the extra X. Everyone else gets the finger for wrecking our fun.
I’d go for 2BES, sounds like 2BS when you say it. If 2NM were to convert, I’d go 2ENM.

I would have just added an F for FM eg. 2BSF, 2XLF, 2NMF where not already taken (as a few stations did this with their Section 39 licences. 2RGF for 99.7 Griffith, to go with 2RG).
I see where you’re going with it, but I like my idea better. Because I’m an arse.
For the FM conversions of 2GF and 2RE, I reckon something like 2CLV (Clarence Valley) and 2MGL (Manning Great Lakes) respectively would make for great four lettered callsigns.
I reckon 2GEF and 2ARE.
Missed an S in there.
Yeah, they shouldn’t be referring to a description of the station’s owner though.
So 2TIGHT is out then?
considering it doesn’t meet callsign conventions…
2BOB is already taken, which would be appropriate, given that’s all he’s seemingly prepared to spend.
And 2CHEAP doesn’t fit either.
2TAR? Taree and Tight Arse Radio all in one.
Gold 1242 in Gippsland is still 3GV on 98.3 FM Bairnsdale and 104.5 FM Bemm River. They still broadcast on 1242 AM though as well so I guess it made more sense to keep the 2 letter call sign even on FM.
Yep, repeaters of AM stations on FM have always had the same callsign as AM, as they aren’t different stations. Vice versa for FM on AM (well, if we really had that anyways).
8HOT Darwin was, and still appears to be, on 765 AM in Katherine.
I thought that would have been changed over by now, perhaps COVID has delayed it?
Not necessarily. There actually is repeaters with different call signs. For example again in Gippsland we have ABC Gippsland on FM as 3GLR but on 828 AM in Sale it is 3GI and on 720 AM in Omeo it is 3MT. I’m sure there is other examples in other areas.
ACMA has finalised its LAP variation for Taree, meaning that the FM conversion for 2RE has been given the thumbs up: https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2020L01432
They are probably legacy arrangements eg. has 3MT always been a direct relay of 3GI/3GLR?
And similarly have 3GI and 3GLR always had the same content?
I get the impression that 3GI was meant to be switched off, possibly once the 102.3 3GLR relay for East Gippsland (from Mt Taylor) went to air, which hasn’t happened as yet as far as I know.
yes - in the 80s they ID’ed as 3GI/MT
There was a local campaign against the switchoff of 828AM due to its better reception in various areas of Gippsland compared to FM (hills versus line of sight stuff). As I understand, 828AM is to continue. IIRC during Black Saturday (the fires not the sales), the FM transmitter went off air (being in a forest area) whereas AM continued with emergency broadcasts. Accordingly, probably even less desire to switch off now!
