AM and FM DX

Retirement for you is (micro) fishing and chasing Sharks.

I wonder if interference/hash is jamming some of those Newcastle signals? Hash is really bad in most hotels and motels, probably from all the devices switched on in close proximity to each other.

Yes, there is a bit of hash here too, not as bad as some other places I’ve stayed in.

Did also have weak Wollongong ABCs and a faint Wave FM. Probably wouldn’t have been able to hear that in other hotels.

Very interesting catch tonight on 774 on the TEF while 3LO is on reduced power, an English Lesson on the 500kW powerhouse JOUB Akita, Japan (NHK Radio 2) at around 8350km. I guess it would get nationwide coverage at night all over Japan.

Managed to take this recording on @tvcl’s webserver. Unfortunately looks like 3LO is back on air now, judging by how it goes back into it at around 1:40.

I happened to randomly be tuning the Melbourne TEF webserver when I landed on 102.3 & hearing a familiar, but not heard for a long while, voice of Roland Rocchiccioli on 3BA 102.3 Ballarat. Moments later what I assume to have been aircraft scatter (or Meteor?) reception of ABC Classic from Canberra with RDS overriding 3BA reception, no less, which surprised me.

I haven’t heard Roland Rocchiccioli since the days of George Moore on 2GB.
I’ve always found Roland Rocchiccioli very entertaining to listen to.
For those interested you can hear him on 102.3 3BA every Monday morning at 10.40am.

Roland also writes for the Ballarat times weekly.

At the bottom of article(s) you will find his timeslot at 3BA.
He still sounds as sharp as a tack on air at 78 years of age.
And to read his articles, wow he really shines with his verbose linguistic skills.

Wow, that’s amazing! I thought Canberra FMs were impossible to get in Melbourne due to terrain blockage. In my 3 years of FMDXing in Melbourne, I have never heard anything from the Canberra FMs (even with my 4 ele Yagi).

Almost certainly a meteor train- that’s the only way you’ll hear Canberra there and vice versa. A DXer in Botswana often receives RDS via meteor scatter:

And vice versa, that Terrain is the reason why I never got Melbourne via Tropo in the Southern Highlands and how I get Tasmania more often than Victoria via that mode. I only had Victoria via Tropo once back in March/April 2021.

With 3NE now off air, seems like 1566 kHz is now dominated by ABC Local Radio Gympie here in Sydney.

It seems to get out well for a 200 watt station. I thought we might hear a NZ or Asian station instead.

1566 is silent here now, only splatter from KIX Country on 1557

Audible on my KiwiSDR server with the YouLoop aerial, but much weaker than 3NE was: http://tvcl.asuscomm.com:58080/

Can’t really get it on my TEF AM server, as the MLA-30+ picks up too much local RF noise.

Comes in pretty well on the Manly-Warringah Radio Society’s KiwiSDR server though, as they have a better antenna: http://websdr.mwrs.org.au:8073/

VL2NI Norfolk Island heard weakly into Cooma last night on 1566:

This is with a huge 200 m longwire though.

Through my Scanning on the TEF Servers this morning… have found the 88.3 WS/Gold Camden is now in Stereo Finally

I think 88.3 was always in stereo; it was the 99.1 one that was (and still is) in mono.

Oh My Bad… I seem to recall someone said it went into mono for a bit. Maybe I’m Dreaming lol

Ah, it’s possible it was in mono for just a bit – I haven’t been monitoring it closely.

And yes, 99.1 in mono baffles me, also as to why neither 88.3 or 99.1 has never (AFAIK) had RDS. With AF. That should be a no brainer.

From memory, they used to have RDS + AF, but it was removed at some stage.
