AM and FM DX

You just got one upped. The Hobart Tropo reached as far north as Bowral. Also had Launceston on 92.5 and 93.3

Wow- nice. Possibly into Bungendore as well, bugger. Now I know what weather setup causes Hobart tropo at least, a shallow SE change with heat inland. 23-24 at Trentham compared to just 17 at Bungendore today.

Update: 93.9 Hobart is still in at Bowral at 10pm local time with Stereo Peaks but not strong enough for RDS.
Tried for Hit 100.9 but it was a mix of Brown Mountain and Bankstown and 2SER was too strong for Triple M.
TVCL is receiving it on his server at Hurstville, so I had been one upped.

Surely @Radiohead is a chance with his phenomenal takeoff south?

Very annoying I am not at home for this event. It’s as bad as missing a snowfall when visiting the tropics!

Not so lucky with Hobart 93.9, but 91.7 NE Tas is in.

Getting a bit of DX here in Sydney this evening/morning.

Most notable being 104.3 Vision Christian Radio Hobart, 91.7 ABC Northern Tasmania, 93.9 ABC Classic Hobart, Hit 104.7 Canberra and 105.5 SBS Radio Canberra.

This is amazing stuff guys, 1000km+ tropo, well done.

Looking at the maps, I had never realised how much the Hobart-Sydney path is across water/straddles the coastline. Possibly goes some way to explaining how that long haul tropo develops.

Hobart Tropo is still in at 9am. Nulled out 2SER to receive Triple M Hobart.

No tropo to Tassie receivable down here today with lines of showers and storms moving across VIC. Headed back to NSW tomorrow; currently in the less DX friendly pastures of Yarragon.

Sydney-Hobart flights basically follow the coastline all the way to Mallacoota; this is the closest to the great circle path. The return flights go a bit further inland over Cape Conran and up to Cooma.

While I was driving along the highway through Bomaderry just after midday, there was co-channel interference on 96.5. The station completely wiped out Wave FM for about two minutes and it was playing ā€œCalifornicationā€ by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I didn’t get to hear a station ID unfortunately, but i’m really not sure what station it could have been. Maybe JJJ from Griffith?

You probably got someone using a car transmitter that is set to 96.5

I think it’s a car transmitter, I’m not hearing anything. and that’s my hood

And surely whoever was using that in car transmitter was also getting interference from Wave FM? It’s a wonder they didn’t try and find a better frequency.

2SSR 99.7 is off-air at the moment, for those in the Sydney area wanting to try and DX on that frequency.

Are you getting Rhema Newcastle or anything else with your elaborate set up?

Nope, but could get Rhema on the street next to mine in the car radio which has an extra ~20m elevation compared to where I am. Orange commercial stations are also permanent on the car radio there. I’m jealous of the street next to mine .

Looks to be some enhancement about today - had weak Power FM and 2EC from Batemans Bay, had 2ST Nowra and Triple M Port Macquarie both at decent levels with RDS too.

ABC stations from Batemans Bay and Canberra more elevated than usual.

Weak Hit 104.7 and Mix 106.3 Canberra heard too.

Basically had Bega and Eden near Robertson on the car radio when driving down the coast including 2KY on 107.1 mixing with Highland FM.

Today is a good day.

I’ve had a new coax cable ran from my aerial mast down to the radio corner through a new wall plate and fully shielded flylead from an old Austar satellite receiver. This has helped to nearly completely eliminate some QRM I had issues with previously from the FM band, and it’s allowed the HF band to absolutely belt in now with next to no interference on either MW or SW outside normal activity.

Tonight completely smashed my previous DX record on MW with a flood of NSW and QLD stations previously masked by interference (with some being completely blocked) now coming in cleanly.

Some examples were the following:
531 Radio Italia (now audible during the day)
567 2BH (now audible during the day)
621 3RN (now audible during the day)
765 5CC (stronger reception)
774 3LO (now audible during the day)
891 5AD (stronger reception)
963 2RG / Triple M (stronger reception)
1044 5CS (previously weak, now fair to good)
1071 3EL / Gold (stronger reception)
1188 2NZ (previously weak, now good to strong)
1251 2DU (previously completely inaudible, now good)
1278 Magic (previously very weak, now fair to good)
1341 3GL (stronger reception)
1377 3MP (previously very weak, now fair)
1395 5AA (previously very weak, now good)
1422 3XY (previously very weak, now strong)
1530 2VM (previously very weak, now strong)
1611 Vision Christian Radio (previously inaudible, now fair to good)

1611 is interesting since we used to have a local oldies station there. However it went off the air a few months ago, so now its become an open slot for DXing.

On the FM side, this evening I managed to receive 103.9 ABC Classic, 105.5 Triple J and 106.3 SBS Radio from Adelaide just above the noise floor, along with the usual suspects of 101.9 Triple J and 105.1 ABC Classic from Loxton, all fading in and out.

I had a brief whiff of the Adelaide commercials (104.7 Triple M and 107.1 SAFM) but those barely appeared.

102.1 ABC Mildura Swan Hill faded in and out, but was there. none of the other Goschen ABCs were audible.

107.3 had something trying to appear but otherwise was unintelligible. The map suggests maybe Flow from Kingston?

96.9 Flow FM from out at Meringur and 90.7 Hot FM at Wentworth don’t seem to have gotten any stronger than usual, with no signs of RDS from Hot.

As a bonus, I tried SW and was able to receive WWV and WWVH on 10mhz, these were both totally inaudible before, so a significant improvement.

Otherwise a great time.
