I did enjoy hearing 2SSR whilst Rhema was off air for a few hours this morning. Back on now (unfortunately). Reception was good enough for RDS at times, but did fade up and down a bit.
Also no real enhancement about today, which suggests I would have almost permanent reception here if not for Rhema (which is the strongest of the local signals here).
In SE QLD, I find 91.5 is a ābellwetherā station. There is always a station receivable, but which rises to the top is a good indication of troppo conditions. From the north there is 4GRC - Cooloola Christian Radio, to the west is SEN Track Toowoomba and from the south is JJJ Coffs Harbour. During standard reception conditions you can separate them with different antenna configurations, but during tropp events one will tend to dominate no matter what. Today seems to be JJJās a bit stronger than usual. Any other similar frequencies around?
Yes, Iāve got a few like that (by moving my folded dipole about).
95.7 2ABC or 2VLY
96.5 2CHR or 2UUL
97.3 2MAQ or 2ILA
98.1 2PNN or 2VLY (2WIN will override both when strong tropo comes in from the south. Based on 2UUL reception, would also be heard in normal conditions here too).
In Melbourne there are a few examples of this:
91.9: SEN Latrobe Valley or Hit Bendigo
93.5: Vision Warragul or Triple M Bendigo
94.3: Triple M Gippsland or ABC News Radio Ballarat
94.5: UGFM Kinglake, Triple J Shepparton or 3YBFM Warrnambool
95.3: Triple M Shepparton or Coast FM Warrnambool
98.3: 3RPP Frankston or OCR FM Colac
99.5: Vision Radio Geelong or TRFM Traralgon
106.3 MIXX FM Colac or Flow FM Healesville
I mentioned 91.5 because of the hash caused by three stations. There are several frequencies that have two including
90.7 - Crow FM and PNN Coffs
92.3 - Kicks Wide Bay and ABC Coffs
94.5 - PNN Nambour/Gympie and ABC Mt Nardi
95.3 - ABC Cooloola and Classic Mt Nardi

104.1 - JJJ Toowoomba and 2MW
105.7 - RN Toowoomba and Metro
107.3 - Classic Toowoomba and Juice

104.5 - 2UUU Nowra and Star 104.5 Gosford
107.7 - GNFM Goulburn and Triple M Gosford
For me, the ones that vary are depending on the direction/strength of tropo are:

Iāve also recorded footage of some of the more distant stations which I managed to pick up, so I might compile them and upload them onto my channel sometime soon.
104.5 is a mess at my location. Thereās strong interference from both Triple U (a community station from Nowra) and Star 104.5 (from the Central Coast), so neither signal comes through that well. I can usually pick up Triple U slightly better, but on the next street over from my house, Star 104.5 is the stronger signal!
Yeah, iāve never been able to receive Hit 101.3 at home, for some reason. I donāt really understand why, because Iāve received it from areas nearby and I believe it also comes from the same transmission tower as Star 104.5? I didnāt even pick it up when I did a bandscan in my previous car (which had a longer aerial on the roof) at home six years ago.
The reception of Star 104.5 and 107.7 Triple M isnāt particularly great here either, although I can at least receive them consistently.
Iāve been able to pick up KIX Country on 101.1 on some occasions, but itās very hit and miss. I think Saddleback Mountain blocks most of the signal from reaching my area. Even the reception of Sky Racing Nowra is typically poor here too; it had a lot of static when I received it this afternoon.
I was able to faintly receive ABC South East on 103.5 this afternoon, but I wasnāt able to receive any of the other stations from Batemans Bay.
As promised, hereās a video of the distant AM/FM stations which I was able to receive from my car stereo earlier today. The picture and sound quality arenāt great, but the stations are still audible, lol.
No, Triple M 107.7, Hit 101.3 & Star 104.5 all have their own separate towers they transmit from, spanning a couple of km from the South to the North, with Triple M the Southern most, Hit in the middle & Star at the North end.
Slightly unusual enhancement to the west into Brisbane this morning - not that it gave anything very interesting outside of better reception from Toowoomba and Dalby. Now is back to the more normal troppo from the north up to Rockhampton.
Congrats, even I struggled to get that with my big setup and a great takeoff westwards. I reckon vertical pol might be the reason (since on the car radio). It didnāt help that Eagle FM was blasting away most of the time into Oatley. Iām not sure if you have a V Yagi aiming towards Dubbo? If you wanted to really āgo nuclearā with your setup, you could have a vertical and horizontal Yagi for each point of the compass
Zoo FM Dubbo uses mixed pol as I used to get that no trouble most days, up to 2 bars off aircraft scatter.
Will have to brave the heat and humidity and take the TEF for a spin in Oatley Park and maybe at the end of Yarran Road to see how it compares with my previous portables. I still havenāt tested it in the Sydney CBD either.
On that, what are peopleās āwhite whaleā stations here? For me when I was still down in Victoria, I always wanted to pick up Bairnsdale/East Gippsland FMs from Geelong/Melbourne but never did, despite the relatively short distance compared to other tropo Iād routinely get. Something about terrain, blocked channels made it impossible.
It was just weird - you could have tropo so good from Gippsland that the decoding DTV signals from Mt Tassie was possible, yet Mt Taylor only 100km further east was never to be heard.
For me, probably the commercial FM stations in Tamworth, Dubbo and Parkes. Similar reasons, unable to null out other stations, and with Dubbo, distance and relatively low power.
