AM and FM DX

Even though 70cm is ok for the middle of the FM band, they should have supplied a longer antenna that can be extended for the low frequency end then retracted for the other end. Plus the radio is not just FM. A longer antenna would be useful for SW and even AM.

I found rabbit ears aligned vertically made a significant improvement - in some cases better than a mounted horizontal FM antenna for some stations.

Big Tropo this morning, Newcastle very strong with all stations received in good stereo,. The stronger 2ST now stopping the RDS decode on Triple M Newcastle.

Very weak Middle Brother, but strong Mt Moombil. Triple J on 91.5 actually interfering with the HPON on 91.6, probably the strongest Mt Moombiil has been here this Summer.

On the car radio Triple J Tamworth, and strong Real fm Mudgee. No test on 97.1 so far.

You’re doing well getting DX in the middle of the Sydney CBD- that’s a true test of the TEF’s capabilities. It does help that Koori and 2MBS are on Artarmon these days.

When I went to school in the city from 1999-2004, my portables were a sea of overload. It was a struggle to get even Wollongong FM from the rooftop playground.

This is how I remembered it too.
2MBS and 2CBA back then were received quite well, there was signal overload but very little or no multipath. 2day fm / Triple M / WSFm and Mix 106.5 suffered severe overload and multipath, so bad that it could be mistaken for a weak signal.

I don’t remember how Gore Hill was received as I could not stand Triple J back then.

I’m at work so can’t really do any DX testing, but it must be quite strong from the North into Greater Sydney at the moment, we’re having all sorts of issues with the Inputs to the Picton DTV translator, it seems like it’s getting over powered by the Raymond Terrace translator signals right now, hasn’t been this bad for a few years.

Yes at 5:00an this morning Newcastle was booming in so no surprises that Medowie is knocking out the Sydney SW input signal.

Also Mt Moombil was received at the strongest levels so far this year.

Yes I just went back up to the rooftop deck which gets a bit of morning shade.

Now have Nelson Bay ABCs but 100.9 is still Connect FM.

Still weak Coffs Harbour ABCs and fair Taree ABCs, Newcastle ABCs at good levels too.

Still also have Batemans Bay and Orange ABCs, but weaker than last night. Nothing from Canberra , CW or NW Slopes, but did hear a weak Tamworth ABC RN on.93.9.

The warm westerly is in here, which will be followed by a cooler SE’ly, so that’s it for the tropo from this part of the world for the time being.

We had a bit of smoke haze this morning from all the HR burning in Sydney/Illawarra so there was an inversion around.

I wonder if or how long it will be before there is an Australian distributor for the TEF radios, like there is for Tecsun, given their superior performance.

I would prefer to buy locally for a bit more confidence that I’m getting the right product, quicker delivery, local warranty and better after sales support.

Good catches and nice pic. That’s near where I used to work 20 years ago. I took a handheld TV up to the 28th floor of 175 Liverpool Street and managed to get the Wyong translators there.

I forgot to mention that 99.5 ā€˜AMV Radio’ (Australian Muslim Voice) is currently active in Canberra for Ramadan. It’s also running RDS= AMV. This might be a good target for @Radiohead assuming Katoomba and Coffs can be nulled sufficiently.

Did get it by Tropo here earlier this week mixing with Move FM. Got it again last night. Both times no RDS

Move will take a bit of umm, moving off 99.5.

Reception is quite decent here.

+1 more for the TEF crew. Radio still to come, but so far very impressed with the receive of the module.

Makes me think that the old Channel 4 Albury is being seen/heard in Canberra (sort of).

On that Hepburn forecast chart, what DX could be received in the other heavy patches around Ceduna and Exmouth to Karratha?
