That’s an interesting point. In the case of 2BBB, 2BBB 107.3 has an RDS AF of 93.3 however 2BBB 93.3 doesn’t have an RDS AF. Both share the same PI code. I ‘think’ having AF lists helps the process along (in terms of time & efficiency) for the tuner to select the strongest of the AF signals.
Provided both 7THE frequencies share the same PI code I think both can swap to each others frequency once one becomes too weak & the other is stronger. As is always the case, the brains behind the RDS data & what is done with it, is always in the tuners firmware/programming & this can vary a bit, especially with PI codes as we know between different vehicles.
If I’m wrong with any of the above I’d like to be corrected by someone more experienced with RDS.
I recall listening to a weak 2BBB 107.3 & had it switch automatically to 2BBB 93.3MHz. I didn’t have an opportunity to try the other way. Maybe @Mechsta can pass on his experience?
Went for a spin up to Singleton today. There have been movements
Bulga
89.3 has been flipped from Power FM to 2NM. The signal on that and 90.9 JJJ is a lot weaker than it used to be… couldn’t get them on the New England Hwy like I used to be able too… 90.1 ABC Local Radio is still quite good.
Mt Warkworth Mine
Now ON AIR!! 94.5 (Power FM), 95.3 (JJJ) and 96.1 (ABC Local)… all have stereo pilots, but the audio level is extremely low, so much so that it was hard to tell what was what.
Coverage seems good, could get these on the New England Hwy from just west of Branxton, around Singleton they seem quite consistent too.
…
There was a bit of enhancement about today too…. had Coffs Harbour ABCs just west of Maitland, and at Apex Lookout at Singleton had TRIPLE J RDS on 98.9 Wollongong.
The mining relays are always fun. It’s a case of playing ‘spot the new transmitter’ each Es season, when all the Central QLD mine sites come in at a near optimal skip distance from Bungendore.
So true. And it’s great the have the kind of info that @Radiohead provided in terms of transmission characteristics such as ‘low audio’ & ‘stereo pilot carrier’ (or none) that helps to assist dxers in determining a station/location, especially when so many transmitters & same services can occupy the same frequency.
Mt Ulandra ABCs are being received as well as Hit 93.1 and even 2KY on 95.5 (between Smooth FM Sydney and ABC Classic Illawarra)
Young on 93.9
Griffith/MIA on 99.7 and 100.5 (96.5, 97.3, 98.1 and 98.9 are obviously blocked by Illawarra stations
Norfolk Island VL 2NI 89.9 would be my ultimate dx catch.
Last received in the mid 90’s from Oatley.
At that time it was on 93.9mhz.
No chance now with the semi local Pulse fm on 89.9.
For me.
Any 2Es, especially from Fiji, WA or even Indonesia (would had got that had I had an expensive setup rather than the Sony portable)
Queensland or New Zealand FM via Tropo.
Norfolk Island via E-skip
Any opening occuring if and when local stations are off air for maintenance.
I reckon NZ tropo will be about this warm season. There will be a lot of heat inland due to El Nino and the positive Indian Ocean Dipole; such conditions encourage upper level high pressure. The upper level highs should encourage blocking surface highs in the Tasman, which are a necessary condition for intense tropo. NZ tropo been totally absent of late due to the three-peat La Nina and related troughiness over the east coast and Tasman Sea.
Queensland via tropo has been done several times from the Monaro, mainly in the 90s though.
Probably Vanuatu coming in over the top of New Caledonia or other Pacific islands.
Love NZ Spe
New Guinea - Papua side and West Papua.
Mount Canobolas tropo
If I was into MW again., probably Western US, Mexico and Hawaii.
Great logs. Noted 100.5 The Breeze (Monto), but 105.1 Rebel FM from Monto almost seemed a bit off frequency or something also interfering, perhaps interference from 105.1 4WBR Maryborough?
Mt. Rawdon listed nearby on 101.5 & 107.9, but large hills 9km away probably blocking radio reception of the two outlets from the mine site…
