I have once, when I had an old Creative Zen MP3 player which had an FM radio, since it was small and discreet so no one knew what I was doing! I don’t remember getting a lot on it, FM reception on that was never all that good anyway.
Reception can be great - helps to have radio that uses headphone cable and obviously a window seat were you can have the cable close to the window. Along the east coast the band can be very congested, so you need to know your frequencies to have any chance of an ID. Most stations are all the high power ones - you can receive Sydney stations halfway to Brisbane.
Damn. Oh well. Nice little pre storm DX kick, similar to before last weeks storm.
The sky has greyed over, its cooling down… good timing to get out of here!
Yeah sorry about that! I took the sunshine back with me! Sunny back here in NSW until Sunday.

Correct, Sydney high powered to around Coffs Harbour.
Hit 106.9 blends into Nova 106.9, and River 94.9 travels the furthest south towards Sydney.
Heading south Sydney fm to just north of Albury before the Albury CCI.
Melbourne fm does not get out anywhere as good as Sydney, must be the sharp nulls.
With the local 963AM now switched off in Mt Gambier SA, 2RG from Griffith NSW is now coming through on the 963 frequency on the car radio earlier tonight, every now & then other station would faintly come through over the top, sounded like talkback, then I heard a couple of Toowoomba ads, so I’m guessing it’s 4WK Warwick?. Also 2UE from Sydney come through actually quite well for the most part on 954 & ABC NewsRadio Adelaide was received on 972.
Interesting! Do you still have the ABC on 1476 there too, even though there is already the wider coverage on 1161 from Naracoorte?
Yes we do still have the ABC on 1476, it provides excellent reception in Mt Gambier, it only gets about 25 kms out of town before it starts to fade, It’s transmitter is 1 kilowatt of power (which is much better than the 250 watts for 1602 3WL ABC Warrnambool). The reception of 1161 in Mt Gambier is about the same as 594 3WV from Horsham, it’s ok but not great.
Certainly is ![]()
If you turn on a AM Stereo receiver you will get it in stereo to ![]()
Which sounds great with all the music they play….
1476 skips in here at night as well; it is quite often dominant over 4ZR.
I wonder how many folks in Mt. Gambier will come across Triple M on 963 at night, only to wonder why they are hearing Griffith commercials and why they can’t get anything in daylight hours…
Even Triple M Bunbury could be a possibility in the early hours.
Yeah quite good in the mornings, and now most of the network is stereo as well when the network plays music it sounds good to
That’s great! Are afternoons in stereo too when it comes out of 2HD Newcastle?
Yes I believe it is
Last time I was at the 5MG radio site at Mt Gambier it was just a short T antenna and the site is shown as being only 1Kw. It’s very hard to predict coverage a MF antenna will produce particularly for the skywave. Normally a T antenna is seen only as a backup antenna like at Hammersley in WA.

Great bandscan- I assume you were somewhere elevated given the good strength of Gold Coast FM there?
The RDS for Sea FM 90.9 is amusing- ‘The Gold Coast’s #2 Hit Music Station’.
You bet me to the post by a minute. I thought I was imagining things - lol
Nice ![]()
Which particular model of the TEF 6686 did you purchase? The audio was respectable.
Added the 97.9 Hot FM station to the RDS List.
