AM and FM DX

Sounds like it’s a 2nd newsroom for ABC Illawarra, just not a separate station.
A bit like Parramatta for ABC Sydney as they are both in grey on the map.

I like how they have the main frequencies on the local station card.

EDIT: Even better how on the ABC website it also lists ALL relay frequencies.
eg. ABC Western Plains is listed on 12 frequencies.

Picked up my new car today (2013 KIA Sportage), got a pretty good radio on it compared to my old Toyota. Picks up weak signals from Adelaide and Mildura when there’s no enhancement

Yes nice that they do list all the local studio attached outlets.

I looked at: ABC Central West Live Audio - ABC listen
Noted that Young 96.3FM was also listed there. This seems like an error.

I saw that and that surprised me too. I thought that was part of ABC Riverina.

There’s a few errors on various pages … Under ABC Upper Hunter, 1233 Newcastle is listed!

Presumably because ABC Upper Hunter doesn’t stream - online it is a relay of 1233 Newcastle.

Likewise with ABC Katherine, which streams 105.7 Darwin

Very strong signals from Wide Bay into Brisbane tonight extending up to Rockhampton ABC and commercial as well. Strongest I have ever received Childers. Gladstone commercials also at lowers strength.

Try the Radio Vanuatu Harmonic on 11835khz, it usually gets out better than the official frequencies.

Thanks, have read discussion about this. What is a harmonic in simple terms? I will email them to see what response I receive.

A harmonic I believe in simple terms is a rogue signal that’s a multiple of the origin frequency. (Someone might be able to correct me on this).

For example with Radio Vanuatu.

If you take Radio Vanuatu’s base frequency of 3945 and multiply like below, they are the current harmonics.

3945 * 1 = 3945khz
3945 * 2 = 7890khz
3945 * 3 = 11835khz
3945 * 4 = 15780khz

I believe all those harmonics are still active, I last heard 11835khz last week.

Bit of activity in Renmark this morning, mostly weak signals though (? = unknown signal):

  • 89.3 Gulf FM YP
  • 92.5 (?)
  • 94.3 5MU Murray Bridge
  • 95.3 (?)
  • 95.7 (?)
  • 96.3 (?)
  • 97.7 (?)
  • 98.7 (?)

That’s actually the Mt Barker translator. The main service is on 96.3.

  • 96.3 5MU Murray Bridge
  • 97.7 Flow FM Coonalpyn
  • 98.7 Power FM Murray Bridge

2NBC 90.1 is off-air at the moment if anyone wants to see if they can catch any DX on the frequency.

Wish I could here… RN Gold Coast blocks it out. Might be worth seeing if anyone can get our RN from around the country because for some reason the ABC’s here get out more than the commercials…. You can hear RN well over the border into New South Wales but the GC commercials are normally gone by the time you get south of Pottsville

I’d be willing to guess that the ABC’s radio stations transmit at a higher power than commercial ones almost everywhere.

Anyway, I somehow doubt you’d get RN Gold Coast in Sydney. Probably a more likely reception candidate in lieu of 2NBC would be the Sofala translator of 2BS.

Even here in Newcastle, at my former residence, I was able to get Sunshine Coast reception during extreme tropo, but nothing from the Gold Coast.

And another time in Port Macquarie during another tropo event, I had Brisbane FMs received but again nothing from the Gold Coast.

The furthest south I’ve ever been able to get any sort of Gold Coast reception is around Woodburn, in the Northern Rivers.

The ABC stations on GC are 26kw and the commercials 25kw. I think the commercials are more strategic in where their directional signal is going. They are better received in Brisbane than the ABC which is a better result population wise than leaking into northern NSW.

Thanks for report.
I’m 5 hours too late reading, 2NBC back on air.
Zero tropo about atm.
Nice evening to stay indoors.

As noted by Radiohead the GC signals don’t get too far south. At Woolgoolga Headland you can usually just hear the ABCs but they are very faint; Hot 91.1 Nambour is received more often, consistent with the tropo observations from Newcastle. Brisbane FM from Mount Cooties as well as River 94.9 is generally weak permanent at Woolgoolga Headland.

I had Hot Tomato with RDS in one spot just south of Ballina back in October but am unsure of the absolute southern limit. It was patchy even there, though.

Agree with above based on my experience a few years back. The GC commercials don’t last very long down the Pacific once you get closer to the alignment with Mt Warning. I was able to get them from some of the headlands around Byron but would disappear once you head inland. Assume they also wouldn’t travel too far on the flip side of Mt Tambourine towards Beaudesert?
