AM and FM DX

Probably might be a temporary solution until a clearer feed can be established. 6IX rebroadcasts the DAB feed on their northern suburbs translator so I guess it could be possible.

They need to find another solution pronto; it’s embarrassing to have a barely functional AM signal on an FM translator. People would be better off streaming ABC Canberra or even listening to 666 direct.

I didn’t think of this earlier, but the best solution would be to relay ABC Canberra off the local TV relay. I forgot they are on there because I don’t watch much FTA.

I wonder if the ABC TV service at Mt Gillamatong (Braidwood) carries ABC NSW rather than ABC Canberra?

Yes- I’m not sure. I haven’t actually stayed in Braidwood to confirm what market it relays. If it’s the South Coast then that wouldn’t work.

Captains Flat also has a TV site; again not sure what it relays.

As Braidwood is in NSW, relaying 90.3 Goulburn or 103.5 Batemans Bay might be easier and be more meaningful.

Braidwood is stuck in a bit of a no-mans land between ABC Canberra and ABC South East. That’s why Braidwood FM stepped in and won accolades for its fire coverage. The ABC didn’t have the boots on the ground. I actually agree that the latter may be more useful for Braidwood and Captains Flat, as ABC Canberra doesn’t really cover many news stories from here.

90.3 Goulburn would be a bad idea though as it takes the Central Tablelands (Orange) breakfast show if I’m not mistaken?

Orange?
That’s interesting.
If they didn’t have their own, I’d have thought Canberra or Wollongong brekky would be more meaningful.

Goulburn has never had a locally hosted show to my knowledge; it’s just an ā€˜ABCRR’ relay. Goulburn 90.3 is listed on the ABC Central West page…last I looked.

To the best of my knowledge, the Braidwood TV translator relays the Canberra commercial channels, but relays ABC NSW. Braidwood is mentioned on the NSW weather map on ABC News NSW, but not on ABC News ACT.

It would relay the Canberra channels, inc ABC ACT, as the signal feeds off the Bungendore translator, which is fed off-air from Black Mountain.

To the best of my knowledge 90.3 began as a relay of ABC Central West & has remained that way.

Have received Lord Howe in Port. Years ago at a motel with waterbeds still! On the river, driving in from the north.

Perhaps the watery path right up to and underneath you inside even assists

Stations galore today here too - these are the highlights I noted on the car radio about 1 hour ago at King Edward Park in Newcastle.

90.7 Something playing classical music - suspect a bit of e-skip from ABC Classic at Emerald?
94.7 Triple J Tamworth (over the usual News Radio Taree/Port).
100.1 2RE Gloucester (only 80 watts)
100.7 Radio National Upper Namoi (over the usual Triple M Port Macquarie)
102.3 Triple J Central West Slopes (over the usual Hit 102.3 Port Macquarie)
106.7 Triple M Kempsey

Also the following - which are more common catches here.
96.7 and 99.1 ABC Upper Namoi (along with 100.7 as noted above).
91.5, 97.9, 99.5 ABCs Coffs Harbour
101.9, 102.7, 104.3 ABCs Orange
105.5, 107.1 ABCs Central West Slopes (along with 102.3 as mentioned earlier)

On the way back home, I could hear 102.3 switching between Hit and ABC Classic Canberra

taking the family to Ballarat next weekend, does anyone know if you can get Melbourne FM or even DAB+ reliably throughout Ballarat?

I remember once upon a time being able to receive Smooth FM there but have no clue about DAB or any of the other stations…

I believe the Melbourne FM stations should be received throughout Ballarat quite well, although receiving the DAB+ stations would be stretching it.
