I did get 102.5 Power fm too but 94.5 2EC was stronger, I will be back that way tomorrow on the way to Kangaroo Valley and will try for 2XL.
Drove back to Sydney today from Kiama via Saddleback Mountain and the Southern Highlands.
Great view from Saddleback Mountain well worth a visit if you have not been up there, you can see all the way to Wollongong.
The 2ST 88.5 Kiama translator is still not on air, it looks like the licence has not been granted yet acccording to ACMA.
This is the tower with the array for 94.1 Pulse fm.
Re 91.7 2ST Nowra reception across the Southern Highlands. From Knights Hill to Robertson 91.7 2ST was received stronger then 102.9 2ST Bowral until around Burrawang, at this location both 91.7 and 102.9 were at a similar strength.
From Burrawang through to Mittagong 91.7 2ST was at a similar strength to Eagle fm, and both dropped out at the same location descending down the hill north of Hill Top.
I also noticed a couple of interesting things, the audio quality of 102.9 2ST has improved, I could not tell the difference between 102.9 and 91.7 when both had perfect stereo.
Also 91.7 was half a song behind 102.9 even this afternoon when they werenât running local programming.
I still think Knights Hill would have been a better transmission site for 91.7 while keeping 102.9 on air for local Southern Highlands programming.
A new station has recently gone to air in the Riverland, 91.5 5RM (different to 801 5RM). Might be another one for people to DX
Fantastic pre-sunrise FM dx into Bunbury this week. Wednesday was the best. A few first time heard stations had me referring to the ACMA database to ID, finding a few anomalies.
A strong JJJ station on 104.3 was 1 mystery. Playlist was 1 1/2 hours ahead of WA, so NT timezone, but Iâd safely rule out anything from the NT. Strongest aiming toward the south coast with other strong signals from Southern Ag. Possibly an ill configured privately or shire owned site. Great Southern somewhere my guess.
Another, The Shire of Dandarigansâ site at Cervantes has Hit and Triple M on opposite frequencies in comparison to the ACMA database. 99.9 6FMS plays Triple M and 101.5 6SAT has Hit. Pretty sure Iâve heard these on correct frequencies in the past. Only 20 watts at 320km to me, I donât here Cervantes very often.
I guess the average radio listener wouldnât even notice such things!
Northcliffe perhaps?
Yeah possible. 104.3 certainly fits Northcliffes 0.8mhz spacing plan. Iâve only heard Hit Northcliffe 102.7 once this summer, not this week. Possibly running decent power as well compared to a lot of these WA town site TXs, as well as unlicensed and wrong timezone programme.
1 of many other WA remote radio oddities!
Maybe you could take a drive down there and confirm it (or otherwise)? Itâs not all that far from Bunbury. Google reckons just over 2 hours. Just lay off the Kirup syrup.
⌠and the magic mushies! Might forget why I was there. A very nice drive for sure 1 day. Not this weekend - WA long weekend, city folk invading the countryside everywhere ATM.
Actually, Iâd like to have a listen in Pemberton on the way. I recall a RED FM station there, in the middle of Radiowest/ Hot FM territory at the time. Although that is all equal now.
And Nannup on the way back. I remember the 6BY translator on FM sounding quiet good quality.
Some really good tropo at my location tonight with a lot of new catches for me. This coincides with me realigning the Matchmaster Omni fm antenna. The opening is now facing SW. In normal conditions it gives me better reception of C91.3, 2ST, Highlands Fm, Music Fm, the Orange nationals, and very weak permanent Eagle fm. Wollongong is now weaker and I now loose Power fm to Rhema CC, but with Power and Wave fm now so similar it is not a big deal.
Tonight with tropo here are my new logs-
93.5 Eagle fm in stereo with RDS could only receive it very weakly with the strongest of tropo with the previous fm antenna setup.
93.9 News Radio Tamworth mono (new)
94.1 2CR Portland / Wallawerwang over 94.1 Todayâs Country (new)
94.7 Triple j Tamworth mono (new)
95.1 2BS stronger with new setup
96.7 Classic Mt Dowe (new)
102.3 Triple J CWS slopes
102.9 Triple M over 2ST and Hit 106.9 over VOX.
With new setup Sydney community stations are much stronger and Central Coast, and I now get Radio Blue Mountains with RDS. I will keep this setup moving forward.
Minor detail - 93.9 Tamworth is Radio National (91.7 is their News Radio).
But great results all the same!
Thanks for that did not properly check, I knew it was Tamworth because of Triple J on 94.7.
Any tropo up your way?
Believe it or not Iâve heard that one. I stayed at Pemberton way back in 2001 and Red FM was on 97.3. I think this got changed to a (s)hit Bunbury relay somewhere along the line.
Red FM was also on air at Hyden/Wave Rock (102.1). This was back when they were a real rock station.
Also remember listening to WA FM via satellite on the TV at Margaret River (Prevelly Beach). No WA FM outlets terrestrially, though.
A nice opening for tonight.
Newcastle Commercials, community stations.
Canberra at strong levels
Brown Mountain and Manning River were also received.
Also 88.9 decoded as âMoruya Câ so someone out in Sydney has to fix their RDS.
No sign of 94.5 2EC as it was blocked by 2FBI Sydney. But 105.9 was received.
Also this is probably my last DX Session in Moss Vale (for now) as I will soon be moving to nearby Bowral.
Had Rockhampton earlier in a northerly opeming.
Now from the south with 2GGG good in stereo, ABCâs from Middle Brother weak the most distant.
I wonder how Bowral town will compare to Moss Vale. I am assuming Moss Vale would be better not having the Gib obstructing signals to the east and north east.
We all know how good the lookouts up at the Gib are for dxing.
Thatâs us. Should say âMoruya Country Marketsâ I think. If it was up to me Iâd get rid of the dynamic PSN.
107.3 2SER have gone off air if anyone in Sydney area wish to try for some DX on that frequency. Very little tropospheric enhancement atm though.
UPDATE: Service restored before 4pm sometime.
Know thereâs a lot of observations on here around Sth Coast fm stations coming into Sydney. What is it like the opposite way down the Princes? Have heard stories of Sydney fmâs being received in Nowra. Assume further south than that they would tend to be gobbled up by co-channel interference from the Batemans Bay.
I recall @dxnerd âs post about getting Smooth 95.3 down in Mallacoota, so getting them around Eden and further north shouldnât be an issue.
Yes, the Sydney commercial FMs are usually permanent (weak reception) as far south as around Narooma on the South Coast, in favourable spots such as headlands. Go a bit inland however and they disappear quite quickly. Even Wollongong is a stretch at places like Moruya, in flat conditions.
When coastal ducting occurs, Sydney FM is strong all the way down to Cape Howe and certain spots around Mallacoota. Who knows, it might even get to places like Marlo on rare occasions. The Tasman Sea coastal tropo wouldnât reach far âround the cornerâ to Victoria as it becomes a partial land path.
Sydney FM would probably be strong into far NE Tasmania a few times each summer. Alas, I havenât made it down there in tropo season to test that theory. Have a look at a map and youâll see why this is more than likely.
