Yes, here’s the clip. I was getting classical stations on 104.3 and 105.1. The only ABC Classic FMs on those frequencies are Spencer Gulf North and Renmark/Loxton:
ABC Radio National have been known to play Classical music.
There’s no 19kHz stereo pilot carrier in the MPX spectrum on either station, therefore mono transmissions & more likely ABC Radio National & not ABC Classic.
I could hint at ABC RN Orange & Mt.Wandera & suggest a perusal of ABC RN schedule
at whatever time you listened. Hope that helps
Late Night Live on RN often plays classical music as an interlude between talk segments. May have fooled me too, though. Can the existence or otherwise of a stereo carrier be ascertained even when the reception isn’t strong enough for stereo?
In short with SDR software with a MPX display - Yes, unless the signal is very weak.
When you say: “reception isn’t strong enough for stereo”
This could imply for the individual receiver circuitry to light a stereo pilot light on receiver or decide that reception is strong enough to automatically switch from mono to stereo. The receiver decides this.
That said typically in Australia the measured 19kHz stereo pilot carrier peak is around 22dB below presumed unmodulated carrier peak on SDR#. Some stations like Todays Country 94.1 have their stereo pilot carrier set very high at around -15dB
The Bureau’s Bairnsdale radar recently got upgraded to the high sensitivity Doppler type. It is now readily showing tropo echoes over Bass Strait, so this could be a good indicator for VIC to TAS tropo.
There are some tropo echoes at the moment, though Melbourne is firmly in the hot northerly. The echoes are centred off Lakes Entrance.
But there’s enough enhancement for Mt Wandera ABCs to be heard, along with 94.3 SKY Sports from Goulburn. And I can get more Sydney community stations tonight than usual too.
93.7 Koori not receivable at all here in Stanhope Gardens. Actually tropo is causing strong reflections tonight with Wollongong significantly weaker, no RDS on Wave and i98. Power Fm and Vox fm just above the noise floor.
Wollongong tv glitching a bit and not co channel from Newcastle.
A few years back there was a post on the TV DXing thread asking for people to post their TV DX setups. Just curious as to people’s AM and FM DX antenna setups as well.
Here’s mine - an omnidirectional dipole on the roof for FM:
ADS-B antenna (400 km+ in directions that aren’t obstructed by buildings/topography)
Looking to add HF to the setup as well, though overcoming the RF noise from all the electrical equipment around my house is an issue. Any suggestions as to a good 0-30 MHz aerial that’s not too big/expensive?
with the power out today for pole maintenance, gave me an opportunity to test noise levels & found the digital modem type noise was STILL present. So this ruled out any of the other flats as the source & seems to be strongest out the front near a metal door/panel on the wall. So I’d surmise its the timer system for the outdoor lights causing this & the timer must have a battery backup.
Thanks for the detailed post and picture, Ant5476.
That’s prompted me to add some extra detail about my setup:
Not shown in the picture: 90cm Ku band dish for Optus D2 + Ecowitt GW1001 weather station broadcasting to Weather Underground
FM antenna: Matchmaster 03MM-1EFM (same as yours)
UHF antenna: 91-element UHF Yagi purchased from DSE on special when it was going bankrupt for $53
VHF/UHF combo antenna: Don’t remember - I think it’s just a generic one off eBay, though it works fine
Masthead amplifier: Kingray KMW32FSD also from DSE’s bankruptcy sale for $33 - signal splits to 8 outlets
ADS-B antenna: Provided by Flightradar24
SDR receiver: Airspy R2 and an Airspy HF+ on the way.
I disconnected the FM aerial from the merged output as there was too much signal loss to get the weak FM stations. It now runs directly from the aerial on the roof to the SDR receiver in the attic. The ADS-B receiver also sits in the attic to minimise signal loss from a long cable run.
Yes, that’s correct. I’m in the south of the city.
It might be a knockoff of the Hills antenna. It was purchased prior to the restack moving SBS to VHF, but it pulls in the Kings Cross UHF translators.
Wollongong TV in my area is good. Before putting up the UHF aerial I could get it with rabbit ears inside the house. Many houses in my area seem to have dual Sydney/Wollongong set-ups.
A weak 2BS is the furthest station I can get on the SDR, but my car radio at ground level can pull in the Mount Canobolas stations as permanent reception where I am (around 200km away).
