AM and FM DX

It was Single Hop I guess for you. Received those from Moss Vale last year. About 2000km from where I live which is within single hop distance.
My best was 90.6 ZMFM Palmerston North from Moss Vale via Eskip

Getting South Coast signals tonight.

Braidwood FM on 88.9 in clear mono. Which will be more difficult for me to get in the future if 2RE Taree converts to FM.

ABCs on 101.9, 103.5 and 105.1. I think it’s the first time I’ve received all of these at once since the Mt Wandera TX was rebuilt after last summer’s bushfires.

One note, 103.5 no longer has a stereo pilot. I’m sure it used to? 101.9 did, as you would expect being Classic FM.

My E-Skip record is the Southern Philippines (Davao City) 92.3 fom Numeralla (5435km)

My tropo record is Palmerston North NZ 89.0 (2345km)

MS record is Cairns QLD 101.1 (2100km)

AS record is Mildura VIC from Numeralla (688km)

I last noted 103.5 Mt Wandera before fires in mono…
Still plenty of ABC Local Radio FM transmitters in mono unfortunately.
Currently noting 103.5 there now weakly mixing with Orange.
[UPDATE: Mt.Wandera 103.5 now dominate & mono here]
105.1 Mt.Wandera is there too, but on 101.9 JJJ Orange is dominate as usual.
Unusually 106.9 2VOX is very weak atm. Maybe tropo blocking effect?

I recall recently clearly receiving Braidwood FM on drive from Canberra to Goulburn.
Seemingly not strong enough for RDS, if they’re still using it?

went down to another one of my “DX hangouts” at Mt Cooper this morning. Run into a big swarm of bugs that sounded like rain on the car! Needless to say I had a real cleanup job waiting for when I got home…yuck!

Sad to say, but DXing on a boombox down Bombala way is no longer an option as overload is real bad now (2 x TX sites of Brown Mt & Stuart Hill). Even Gippsland 101.5 is covered by harmonics (and to think 40 years ago the FM used to be completely empty!)

The DE 1103 could get it but some splatter from Harmonics on 101.7 or so.

Most notable catches - with Perisher 98.7 off air, weak RN Orbost could be heard & 90.7 3REG in strong - both on the car radio.
Whilst video-ing 104.1 Albury, there was a big MS event from likely Triple J Toowoomba.

94.5 Bega still not on air yet.

Braidwood FM uses RDS with dynamic PSN. I have let the boss know about your catch, @Radiohead

I’ve received it a few times last summer too.

Its an easier pick up than 2RSR.

Some good tropo from the south tonight,
Wollongong tv hitting same signal levels and quality as the local Sydney channels.

Power Fm decoding full RDS with artist and song title.

94.1 Living Sound over 94.1 Today’s Country.
Funny thing Vox fm weaker then normal.

What is your tropo like up in Newcastle tonight. @Radiohead

Yes, Wollongong is good (around 35db), a bit below Sydney levels though (which are normal at around 42db). 97.3 ABC Illawarra received over semi local Lake Macquarie FM.

South Coast ABCs received again, though weaker than last night (only about 8db).

Just had dinner… will go back outside shortly for another listen.

Wollongong rocketing in now. Wave and i98 now hitting 50db, the unusual part is they are stronger than the ABCs (42db). Wonder if they are doing maintenance?

Power is dominating Rhema too when indoors, at 35db, though Rhema seems to be stronger outdoors which seems odd. Pulse 94.1 can be nulled in too, though only at 28db.

No sign of 2VOX under Hit106.9 though.

ABC South Coast better than it was a few hours ago too.

Massive reflection of Wollongong now.
All signal of Power fm completely gone, cannot hear it above the noise floor.
No presence of Rhema CC either, I have done such a good job of nulling it out.

Wave and i98 are no longer decoding RDS.
Wollongong tv now on the cliff edge and falling off.
Newcastle tropo, starting to ramp up now.
This is the biggest tropo reflection of Wollongong that I have experienced to date.

The reflections are getting even more extreme, i98 gone completely and replaced by News Radio CC.
i98 is as good as a local signal in normal conditions.

Got a very faint 2BA on 103.5 which briefly got enhanced by AS.

Newcastle starting to get very strong with Triple M and Hit decoding RDS at times.

Pye RC-401A Boombox

I got it working!! - I swapped out a spare tuner board I had because the original one had a crack on the board somewhere which I was never able to locate & interrupted the RF path - hence no FM signal. As with Pye equipment, you can’t get schematics anymore nor can you get spare parts - so I just used the photos I took to solder the wiring onto the “spare” board & BINGO!

Tuned to local XLFM 96.1 in glorious FM stereo! - you can see the “STEREO” LED lit.

I miss those stsreo indicators - not many of today’s radios have them now.

Nothing’s gonna stop that Pye now!

here’s a photo of the tuner board & I only had to solder 1/2 doz wires or so. At least the tuner board was separate from the other circuitry to allow me to do perform the “heart” transplant

as you can see - its a wiring mess inside. Typical junk electronics from Pye - cheap

Up in Coffs Harbour now, and I received this 2DD station on 107.5 whilst up at Beacon Hill Lookout.

It’s not in the ACMA listings, I’m amazed that no one has reported them after all this time. The choice of frequency, so close to nearby 2BBB Bellingen 107,3 makes it reek of piracy.

Anyhow, only other catches of note that I got from Beacon Hill Lookout were

88.9 2CRC Coraki
101.9 Paradise FM Ballina
103.5 Radio 97 Mullumbimby.

Welcome to Coffs. Boambee Headland is my choice for DXing. If you get a chance, go there and try it out.
