Though theyād be eligible for VAST too out there then and can watch all those wonderful ads from Alice Springs in glorious SD.
The wind has died down a bit tonight so I bothered to take the teccy outside.
Mt Dowe is the best out of town performer of the high powered ABCs, well ahead of Cenn Cruiach and Tamworth which are both there (Tamworth better). Newcastle is there very faintly and nothing from Orange.
Best out of town commercials are 98.1 Power and 93.1 Real.
Can also report that 88.9 Tamworth is onair from Quirindi on 96.3

Great log!
96.9 and 104.1 would be ABC Local and RN from Murrurundi respectively
Yes Murrurundi on both 96.9 and 104.1. In about 2004 I caught 96.9 relaying Triple J instead; not sure if they change the feed these days.
The lack of a Triple J relay in the Upper Hunter has been a bugbear for one particular MS member- not sure if heās still around.
Yes @ElCapitanCranky has been back on lately, though I think heās in Sydney these days?
I did see 106,5 has been set aside for a 16kw ABC service from Rossgole in the Muswellbrook LAP (same specs as 104.9 and 105.7).
107.3 should also now be available at 16kw since the demise of community radio 2GGZ āMt Helen FMā (also on 101.7 from Muswellbrook).
And thereās no Radio National or Classic FM for the main centres of Muswellbrook/Scone either.
As well as the curious duplication of Local Radio on both 1044am and 105.7fm is an odd one.
Ideally those Muswellbrook services should be reallocated to the low end; too close for a high power co-channel arrangement with Sydney imo. A lot closer than the co-channels in the other direction (Bega, Cooma and Albury). It really isnāt all that far from outer NW Sydney to the Upper Hunter.
I vaguely remember picking up Mt Helen FM from Allandale (between Greta and Lochinvar) in the early 00s.
I agree, in my ideal world, perhaps 88.5, 89.3, 90.1 and 90.9 might have been better allocation for the Upper Hunter ABCs. Though 105.7 has been on air from there for over 25 years now with no apparent issues. I do get some co-channeling with Triple J Sydney down here in Newcastle, but both would be deemed to be āout of area ā in the eyes of the ACMA and be a non issue for them.
I do recall a report in possibly the old version of Media Spy that News Radio 104.9 was logged in North Western Sydney during a summer tropo event, so not impossible for āin areaā interference to occur.
Re Mt Helen FM, at a previous Newcastle address in the mid/late 90s, I did get regular but weak reception of it on an earlier frequency of 95.9ā¦ it started out on 96.1 originally, but I suspect that was changed due to 96.1 from Katoomba.
Those upper Hunter frequencies are too close to Sydney but are there because they predate WIN3.
I can confirm that Upper Hunter has definitely gotten over triple M and J on more than one occasion in parts of NW Sydney.
Been in Sydney since 2016ā¦
We pay for a service we donāt get. You tell me if thatās fair. Iāve called for Triple J and several of the ABC services to be shut down for years.
Put RN on 1044. If 106.5 is available for a national service, and give the public 12 months to determine if they want a community station. If not, make it a ABC station.
Ideally, youād have RN on 1044 (or on FM), ABC Classic/Triple J on 101.7 and 106.5, ABC Newsradio on 104.9 and ABC UH on 105.7. OR roll out digital radio as a regional trial.
If ACMA are looking to get AM stations to convert to FM, kill off 94.5 Hot Country as a narrowcast and allocate it to 2VLY with the same power specs (if possible) and move 2NM from 981 to 98.1 (think about it )
At least all ABC Radio stations aside from Grandstand are available via Digital TV these days, but I definitely agree that at least the main five stations (Local Radio, RN, NewsRadio, Classic & Triple J) should be accessible via terrestrial radio in every part of Australia.
Then thereās the lack of progress for Digital Radio after more than a decade since it launched in the five main capital cities (itās since been made permanent in Canberra, Darwin, Hobart and I think Mandurah WAā¦but thatās about it), but thatās another story!
At least all ABC Radio stations aside from Grandstand are available via Digital TV these days, but I definitely agree that at least the main five stations (Local Radio, RN, NewsRadio, Classic & Triple J) should be accessible via terrestrial radio in every part of Australia.
Thatās my point. You canāt take a TV with you. And you shouldānt have to use your own data to stream the content.
I heard St.Helen FM 107.3 very clear via tropo from Cooma in 2001
JJJ on 102.3 from Mt Cenn Cruaich into Brisbane tonight.

That was me, it was a few years ago now. Intense inland tropo from the Upper Hunter completely wiped out Triple M & Triple J at the intersection of the Ponds BLVD and Stanhope Parkway. The Upper Hunter ABCāS even dominated the locals. It was in one spot only and once I moved of that spot the locals returned to full strength with no further co-channel. I have not experience this since.
Thats good!
I didnāt detect anything from Coonabarabran when I was in Hay or Griiifth, so you might be getting a bit of lift there.
I wonder if your 105.5 in Hay is also Coonabarabran and not Ballarat since they are both Classic FM?
Anything from Mildura, Shepparton, Swan Hill or Bendigo there?
I can understand 2BH reception being good that way since its in roughly the same direction from Broken Hill as Menindee and thereās nothing else in between, but 5RM being so good did puzzle meā¦ Conversely I donāt recall either station being that good when I was in Adelaide last year.
When in Temora, did you note if Roccy FM or 2LF relays were on air (104.1 and 104.9)? As the last 2LF sweeper I heard when I was down there earlier this month only mentioned Cootamundra, Cowra and Grenfell relays, so I suspected they werenāt on air.
Edit: Just saw your post in the Super Radio Network thread re Temora, so the answer is yes!
Coony in this morning on 102.3 and 107.9, weak. Orange has also reappeared on 101.9.
Went out with the loop at sparrowās to try for WA and Africa; 909 Botswana was tentatively heard. 6NA faded up well over 4VL and 6RN Perth was briefly good on 810. IDs from Triple M Albany and Esperance.
Bendigo, Swan Hill, Mildura and Shepparton all in on FM, mainly the ABCs but 99.5 Mildura quite good.
