Probably more to do with the tall buildings and topography than distance… Sydney CBD needs them as well despite being only about 8 kms from Gore Hill/Artarmon.
Multipath distortion and shadowing is a huge problem in the CBDs of the capital cities, so having those translators helps backfill the obstructed areas.
I vividly remember the multipath issues in the Adelaide CBD, where analogue would just be a ghosty mess and digital failed to work at all.
Nice lift in reception from Rockhampton ABC’s into SEQ.
Not getting any signal from 2RE or MAX FM Taree tonight, looks like the floods have knocked them out.
Getting faint 2BRW and 2SER is much cleaner than usual.
Edit: Can’t hear any sign of 2BOB 104.7 either.
Middle Brother ABCs still on air as normal, heard 100.7 and 102.3 Port Mac too.
One final observation from tonight, someone has (finally!) turned up the audio level on 89.3 2VLY (Power FM) Bulga Mine, but in doing so, the stereo sound and pilot has been lost.
We have a strong westerly here today so the chances of receiving 2BRW on the North Coast are minimal. That’s a pity.
I plan to do a bit of DXing later this afternoon… will be interesting to see if 2RE is still off air and whether there is any trace of 2BRW with a westerly up here…
Had an upturn in reception from Mt Dowe with Sky Racing, GGG etc. Thought there might have been a change for TMFM but unfortunately not.
From the other side, in Timaru I would often get Sydney, Wollongong, Tasmania, but never Melbourne.
I remember how crazy it was just driving around Timaru in the Austin Princess listening to the Clarion and 96.5 Wave FM and i98FM were just booming through. i98 was even elbowing Port Fm out of the way.
Just had a listen outdoors.
Taree stations back on air, at least 2RE and MAX are, not sure about 2BOB.
Better than expected reception otherwise given the north westerlies, had all Mt Dowe ABCs except News.
Also had most Orange stations, including 103.5, heard music in nulls of the football from ABC Batemans Bay. Didn’t hear 107.5 though.
Also had an E catch! Something faded up on 106.3 quite quickly, up to 25 dbuv in stereo, was an announcer but couldn’t really say what it was, didn’t sound like Mix. Faded after about 30 seconds.
Was 106.3 in English? If it wasn’t, it may have potentially been 5SBS from Adelaide.
Yes it was English.
Not Triple M Coffs?
Didn’t sound like it, and I didn’t hear the Coffs ABCs so highly unlikely.
LOts of enhancement tonight in SEQ. To the north as far as Mackay coming in on 98.7 and 104.3
I know has been a while since this scan was done. I am curious to know where in Sydney you were located for the 2020 scan. I noticed 1224 2RPH wasn’t at 100 percent and had a bit of static compared to the other Sydney stations. Was it in the eastern suburbs, or another area where 1224 isn’t optimal due to it being a western suburbs service?
It seemed clearer in the 2025 scan interestingly enough!
In the southern suburbs of Sydney. Same location for both scans. Probably just a matter of different orientation of the aerial and/or local interference.
In some parts of the southern suburbs, 1224 wasn’t great I noticed. My parents had a car radio that showed the signal strength and 1224 would have dropped a bar by the time you reached Heathcote. It was still 2WS back then
It’s scratchy on the Northern Beaches and Eastern Suburbs too (hence the 100.5 relay for the city/east).
Even at Strathfield where I grew up (inner west) it wasn’t as strong as the other AM stations and at times would not scan if under a carport, service station roof etc
