AFLW

I don’t think we can ever make a thing about sell outs this season. There are restricted crowds.

Plenty can be made about sellouts this season. Being the first to have sold tickets, it puts the trolls who have been saying no-one would pay to watch AFLW in their place.

Yes, but there is such a small capacity. How many are allowed into Punt Road?

About 5000 in normal circumstances, but it was reduced to about 2600 for last year’s AFLW matches.

With restrictions, that becomes?

1,300 tickets have been sold according to The Age and from what I’ve seen on social media people disappointed they’ve missed out. Perhaps given the restrictions, they could have played at a larger venue.

Still, my point remains it’s an up yours to the naysayers who said nobody would pay to watch women play footy.

Not sure about the two hours to sell out. Tickets went on sale at 10am and I have heard some fans say that by 10.05 there were no tickets available to buy.

My point exactly. You can take sell-outs with a grain of salt if numbers are restricted that much.

True.

The 2021 season was launched today across four states.

The Crows beat the Eagles in Perth on Saturday. GWS players, who were on the same flight as the Crows, were allowed to fly back to Sydney this morning, but had to self-isolate at home until 9pm AEDT this Friday, February 5.

UPDATE: the AFL announced this afternoon that this weekend’s matches between Adelaide and Fremantle, and between GWS and West Coast, had been postponed. Other matches would proceed as normal.

UPDATE 2 4/2: the AFL has announced three changes to Round 2. GWS will host Adelaide behind closed doors, while Brisbane will host Gold Coast instead of Geelong. Geelong in turn will face Collingwood.

Sad news for me considering I bought tickets to watch the Suns play in Victoria

West Coast and Fremantle will get to play this Sunday, in the local derby at Fremantle Oval, however the match will be closed to the public in accordance with current COVID guidelines in Western Australia. The match starts at 4.15pm local time (7.15pm AEDT) and will be shown on Fox Footy nationwide plus Seven in WA.

Caroline Wilson complained on 3AW this afternoon that this year’s AFLW grand final would have to overlap with men’s matches on the weekend of April 17-18. She suggested that the match should be played on a Thursday night to give the event its own attention.

It will be interesting to see if the AFL will reshuffle the Round 5 fixture to give the AFLW decider a standalone timeslot.

hopefully it is not on the Saturday. If it does there is zero way I could watch it

Why?

Because my team plays in the AFL and VFL as a double header on Saturday starting at 1pm

If you’re at the game, just watch it on your phone and look up and down and up and down and up and down. Or listen to the radio call.

The 2021 AFL Players Association AFLW Awards were held last night during The Front Bar. Collingwood’s Brianna Davey was voted MVP by her peers.

The Brisbane Lions won their first AFLW premiership on their third attempt, beating 2019 champions Adelaide by 18 points at Adelaide Oval in today’s grand final, in front of 22,934 fans. Lions defender Kate Lutkins was named best on ground.
Both team captains suffered injuries during the match: Brisbane’s Emma Zielke (hamstring) and Adelaide’s Angela Foley (knee).
The Lions’ famed defence was in full display at the GF and was the main factor in the team’s win.

Zielke said in a post-match interview that the GF was her last AFLW game. She was one of four Lions players to have played every match possible since the competition began in 2017.

It was also the last game for Zielke’s teammate Lauren Arnell, who announced at the end of last year that 2021 would be her final season.

Orla O’Dwyer becomes the second Irish woman (after Crow Ailish Considine in 2019) to win an AFLW premiership medal.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner later tweeted that the team would be presented with a Key to the City when it returns home.
