AFLW

The AFL announced this afternoon that ARIA-award winning singer Amy Shark would perform at Sunday’s AFLW Grand Final between Adelaide and Carlton. While it is a good choice, I think the league should have asked Missy Higgins to perform, to make up for the cancellation of her appearance at last year’s decider due to torrential rain.

WOW! This has surpassed the 41975 crowd last year between Fremantle Womens v Collingwood Women’s at Perth Stadium. Believe it or not, it has even surpassed the Port Adelaide v Carlton Crowd yesterday.

Adelaide won their second AFLW premiership in three years but at a heavy cost, with Chloe Scheer and best-on-ground Erin Phillips suffering ACL injuries.

This year’s AFL Women’s Grand Final was a lopsided match where Adelaide Crows beat Carlton by 45 points. During the 2nd half, Carlton scored one point for every quarter. This proves that Carlton’s sloppy performance has costed them their maiden premiership flag.

I’ve just had a thought…

Over time, would there be a mothers-daughters rule in the AFLW draft like there is a father-son rule in the AFL?

There’s already a father-daughter rule so I’d imagine so.

Yesterday Collingwood sacked its AFLW coach Wayne Siekman after the club finished last in its conference this year. Today Carlton confirmed Nicole Graves has quit as general manager of women’s football. Could Nicole join the Pies?

Moana Hope is now looking for her third AFLW club after she was delisted by North Melbourne this afternoon. Hope was one of the biggest signings of the competition along with Darcy Vescio (Carlton), Daisy Pearce (Melbourne) and Katie Brennan (Western Bulldogs). Hope struggled for two seasons at Collingwood before joining the Kangaroos last year and regained some form.

A recommendation to the AFL does not mean conferences are locked in for 2020; the AFL Executive will decide whether to accept the recommendation and if it does, the AFL Commission will then have the final call.

With Gold Coast, Richmond, St Kilda and West Coast joining in AFLW in 2020, what will it happen next?

Three months later, Tayla Harris has been immortalised in a fibreglass statue, commissioned by NAB. Harris and sculptor Terrance Plowman unveiled the statue at Melbourne’s Federation Square this morning.

On Twitter, someone was asking why the AFLW finals could not be postponed like the men’s season?

Possibly a moot point this year but the state leagues usually begin after the AFLW season so if there’s any chance of those commencing there’d be a clash.
Most significant thing I see is the players need to go back to work, they’re not full time footballers.

UPDATE 28/4: Carlton’s Madison Prespakis has become the youngest player to win the AFLW best and fairest award. She won the Rising Star award only last year.
This year’s Rising Star award went to Western Bulldogs’ Isabel Huntington.

The AFL announced yesterday afternoon that the 2021 AFLW season would commence on the week of February 1.

UPDATE 10/12:
The AFL today announced the 2021 AFLW season would start on January 28. The two conferences have been abolished with the 14 teams competing for a single ladder. All matches will be ticketed for the first time.

Tickets to Sunday’s clash between Richmond and Brisbane Lions at Punt Road Oval sold out within two hours today. There were only 1300 tickets available with the ground’s capacity reduced by half due to COVID-19 restrictions.
