The Eagles finish last after losing to Adelaide by 45 points at home. After a fairly even first three quarters, the Crows kicked six unanswered goals in the final term.

Port Adelaide’s Zak Butters has won ABC Radio’s Footballer of the Year award for 2023. He received three votes in the Power’s 31-point win over Richmond this afternoon to finish on 32 votes, five ahead of Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli who didn’t get a vote last night, even though his team beat Geelong.

Melbourne will play against Collingwood in the 1st Qualifying Final, after beating the Sydney Swans by 21 points at the SCG. Despite Sydney’s surge in the 3rd quarter, Melbourne piled on 5 unanswered goals to secure the victory at the SCG. The Sydney Swans will have to play an away elimination final, pending on the results against Carlton and GWS.

GWS have ended Western Bulldogs’ finals hopes with a 32-point win over Carlton in the final game of the home and away season at Marvel Stadium tonight, also ending the Blues’ nine game winning streak. The Giants blew the game wide open with seven consecutive goals from the middle of the third quarter to the middle of the final quarter.

GWS finish 7th and will face St Kilda in an elimination final. Sydney dropped to 8th and will play Carlton in the other elimination final.

In the qualifying finals, Collingwood will host Melbourne at the MCG, while Brisbane will play against Port Adelaide at The Gabba.

Carlton forward Charlie Curnow finished with three goals and claimed his second Coleman Medal. He kicked 78 goals this season, with Adelaide’s Taylor Walker second on 76, and North Melbourne’s Nick Larkey third on 71.

Adam Simpson is staying on as Senior Coach of the West Coast Eagles going into 2024 :blue_heart::yellow_heart::eagle::rugby_football:

“At the meeting today the Board unanimously agreed that Adam will remain as senior coach,” Chairman Paul Fitzpatrick said today.

“No one knows our playing list better than Adam and he has already steered us through the first phase of the rebuild. We are confident he can take us forward and take us where we aspire to be.

“Adam is central to our development plans to assist the club’s rise up the ladder.”

Why?

The whole point of the pre finals bye is so that they can schedule the Thursday final in the first week, and have done so every year since implementing it.

That’s like saying you were surprised the greens didn’t win a majority in the lower house…

I didn’t think that was it, I thought it was so players could freshen up and deal with any niggling injuries, and it would stop clubs resting so many players in the final round like so many NRL teams are (sadly) doing this weekend.

The AFL has also had Thursday night games this year without needing a bye beforehand.

Yes they did, but none of those teams played the Sunday before. The bye allows the AFL to stretch out the final round (see Carlton v GWS) and give maximum flexibility to schedule whatever team they want on the Thursday night 10 days later.

Just follow the money, has nothing to do with giving players a freshen up (even if that’s what the PR machine spins for you)

They should have been playing more Thursday night games during the home and away season then!

They would, but they’re limited by the number of 5 day breaks per team (currently 1)
