AFL on Nine

Could Mick Malthouse be joining Nine to replace Kane Cornes? Mick has been on the Nine News AFL promo and a little video for the SFS ?

Nine’s broadcast of the 2005 Brownlow Medal which was their 2nd telecast of the Brownlow Medal as part of the 2002-06 rights deal. Ten had even-numbered years with Nine odd-numbered years.

Under that broadcasting contract, Ten had the exclusive rights to the finals series; it would’ve been impossible for Nine to televise it as they already had the NRL FTA broadcasting rights (and still do today) and they faced the possibility of having to delay such matches.

Speaking of major events, which network had the rights to ANZAC Day match, Queen’s Birthday, and Easter Monday between 2002-2006?

Nine did the season opener, Easter Thursday and Anzac Day; Ten had Queen’s Birthday and Easter Monday.

Nine did them. Ten did 2007 - 2009; 2011. Seven did 2010.

Not sure how that 2007-2011 deal was worked out though. I recall a HS or Age article with Ten’s football head Dave Barham back then saying the networks collaboratively with the AFL selected their matches in advance, I think this was before the fixture was set in stone 12 months in advance, but could be wrong.

Ten always did the season opener/Thursday night games, Easter Monday/Monday games and Dreamtime at the G/Saturday afternoon and night games during this deal as well. Seven always did Friday and Sunday games, recall they may have done one or two Thursdays as well across the 5 years. But finals/GF were shared alternating years with Seven, you could argue Seven walked away with the chocolates with 2010 (draw and the final ever replay).

I do recall 10 doing a Friday Night game one year when it fell on Anzac Day.

This would be the first time the Brisbane Lions have played in the season opener since the infamous Easter Thursday night match against St Kilda in 2005 when Lions defenders Mal Michael and Chris Scott targeted newly-appointed Saints captain Nick Riewoldt.

Round 18, 2004 - one of those very rare times that BT/Eddie/Garry Lyon called the 1:00pm match, and Dennis/Dwayne/Dermott the 2:00pm match that GTV would show on delay/highlights package at 4:00pm immediately following the former match.

Normally, from what I could gather, Dennis/Dwayne/Dermott would cover the live 1:00pm match and Eddie/BT/JB (two of the three) would cover the following match. Though I know of a few occasions when either JB or BT has covered the 1:00pm match.

Also that season, the Anzac Day game (it fell on a Sunday) was held at the earlier time of 1:15pm; this also allowed Nine to show the NRL Anzac Day game between the Dragons and Roosters live into Sydney and Brisbane immediately after; normally Sunday afternoon NRL games were on a one-hour delay so as to flow into National Nine News.
