AFL Coverage

This radio approach is old school.

Remember on TV during 2002-2011, Ch 10 would broadcast EVERY home game of the Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions LIVE on the main channel (in fairness, digital channels weren’t around or part of the rights for a large period of that).

But for a lot of the time, the ratings in those markets were ordinary.

Against movies or whatever Ch 7 & Ch 9 showed.

Interesting to note in Melbourne 3AW and MMM don’t have 1st Option to call Sunday Early 1:10pm in this new agreement.

Same as the current agreement. The 1.10pm game is usually reserved for lowly ranked teams anyway.

Does anyone know what has happened to Adam White? He has been absent on ABC Radio’s AFL coverage for the past 3 weeks, including today’s Grand Final. Gerard Whateley called the match with Clint Wheeldon who flew in from Perth. I hope everything is alright with Adam.

He is certainly around.

So Adam is now working solely for RSN.

Sunday Herald Sun reports that Wayne Carey has signed a new multi-year contract with Triple M and will remain part of the station’s AFL commentary team.

Another undesirable of poor character like Gary Lyons who should have been given the boot.

I wonder if there is a conflict of interest in that Michael Christian does ball by ball for 3AW when he is also part of the Match Review Panel(MRP)? Eddie McGuire doesn’t call for FOX when he has presidential duties for Collingwood, but is that different?

News Corp reports that former St Kilda and Collingwood player Luke Ball has decided to step away from his commitments at 3AW and Channel Nine next year to concentrate on his career at the AFL. He has been umpires director since mid 2016 with league bosses also considering him for a number of different roles.

3AW will have live coverage of this Friday’s AFL National Draft from Sydney, from 6pm to 10pm AEDT. It will include analysis of draft picks and lots of interviews.
(the day/night cricket test from Adelaide will be on NTS)

Herald Sun reports former Hawthorn player Daniel Harford will join 3AW’s AFL commentary team for 2017 and is expected to play a role in the key Friday night slot. He was recently confirmed as host of RSN’s breakfast show.

Recently retired Geelong premiership player Jimmy Bartel will be part of 3AW’s AFL coverage for the next two years, starting on Thursday nights through to Saturdays. During the 2016 season he provided special comments on ABC’s coverage on Sunday afternoons, when the Cats were not playing on those days.

Herald Sun reports that Danny Frawley and Campbell Brown will not be a part of Triple M’s AFL coverage next year.

Seems like the AFL radio merry-go-round won’t end anytime soon since Triple M will have quite a few gaps they need to fill. Firstly, they need to find at least two other analysts to replace Frawley & Brown (they’ve already replaced Lyon with Chris Judd & Paul Roos). Unless they have replacements they haven’t announced yet, there’s going to be more movement amongst stations. In addition, their commentary pairings will change due to BT’s increased role at Seven will mean that he can’t call Sunday afternoon games for MMM anymore.

Interesting times are ahead…

That’s a pretty impressive line up that SEN has for what is a fairly low rating station overall.

Even as an NRL person up north, I have heard of most (but not all) of those names.

We might get more of Barry Denner or maybe one of the interstate guys could fill the gap.

Alister Nicholson said on Red Symons breakfast show on ABC Radio Melbourne that one AFL Women’s match per week will be broadcast live on ABC Radio across Victoria. I think I also hear him the match will be on NewsRadio in the rest of the country but it’s yet to be confirmed.

EDIT: ABC has confirmed NewsRadio will broadcast one AFLW match every week around the country, starting with Friday’s season opener between Carlton and Collingwood.
EDIT 2: Alister Nicholson and Melbourne sports reporter Damian McIver called the match for ABC NewsRadio. It was McIver’s AFL commentary debut and he will be part of AFLW commentary team for the rest of the season.
