AFL Coverage

Yes, you are correct that the current rights agreement allows Nine to stream themselves. I suspect you’re right about AFL having trouble accessing the Nine streams as 3AW’s stream was listed (but silent) on Saturday afternoon last week and hasn’t been seen since. It had been available before that in previous weeks.

This Easter long weekend 3AW will broadcast six matches, starting with Brisbane v Collingwood tonight.

On Good Friday, the North Melbourne-Carlton match broadcast will finish at 7pm AEST, followed by Denis Walter’s Nights program live from Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

On Saturday, 3AW will broadcast the twilight match but pre-match still starts at midday AEST.

Eddie McGuire makes his 3AW commentary debut on Easter Monday as the Cats host the Hawks.

During the ABC’s broadcast of Adelaide v Fremantle this afternoon, Aaron Bryans confirmed that his colleagues from Melbourne and Perth would fly into Adelaide to commentate at the Gather Round matches next week.

It will be interesting to see if SEN and Triple M will follow suit. 3AW will probably call its allotment of matches in its Melbourne studio.

Suspect MMM will have at least those who work for Ch7 or Fox (e.g. Brayshaw, Taylor, Darcy, Montagna, Dunstall, Howard) in Adelaide to work alongside the Adelaide based crew, but they may have one or two games called remotely by a crew from either Brisbane or Perth.

MMM is sending the Melbourne Rush Hour over to Adelaide so presumably other Melbourne callers will follow suit.

The Hills match might be called remotely due to lack of facilities?

Triple M Melbourne will broadcast all but one of Gather Round matches live. Saturday’s Kangaroos-Lions clash will not be broadcast into Brisbane as the station is taking the NRL match between NZ Warriors and North Queensland at the same time.

UPDATE 14/4: 3AW sent most of its commentary team to Adelaide, except Jacqueline Felgate and Jimmy Bartel who stayed in Melbourne as they hosted Breakfast this morning.

Brisbane v Fremantle tomorrow will be broadcast on DAB+ into Brisbane while Triple M Brisbane covers the NRL on the FM frequency. Richmond v Gold Coast will be broadcast into Gold Coast in full on Sunday.

According to Herald Sun’s Scott Gullan, Nine is fuming that SEN’s Craig Hutchison signed an exclusive deal with the AFL in the new radio rights deal which was signed off late last year, paying a high premium to be the only AM commercial option on the AFL app for the next two years.

Is Hutchy still on Nine? If Nine are fuming at SEN, why haven’t they been petty enough to sack him.

I think his media company produces the show (Footy Classified) so it’s not that easy.

Nine could take it in house. Or find another company.

Stephen Beers may have clarified about streaming, but did not explain why 3AW would not broadcast every Thursday night match this year. So far it only covered the season opener between Richmond and Carlton, and Brisbane v Collingwood on Easter Thursday.

Publicly declaring that the league you have broadcast rights to as a “competitor” when said league had no issues carrying advertising that aired on 3AW when they previously offered their commentaries is a bold strategy…

It has been mentioned in the past that the reason is that airing normal programming on a Thursday night is more profitable than footy. They can play more commercials in normal programming than they can during the football call.

Seems like Ben Cameron is back in WA?

Saturday night’s broadcast of the Dreamtime at the 'G game is the first of three games to be called in language, with continued support from Telstra and in conjunction with First Nations Media Australia and RMIT senior research fellow for media and communications Dr Daniel Featherstone.

Round 11 will see the Top End Aboriginal Bush Broadcasting Association (TEABBA) broadcast the Darwin match between Gold Coast and the Western Bulldogs in traditional Tiwi language, while the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAMMA) will broadcast the match between the Adelaide Crows and Brisbane Lions in Arrernte language.
