When the radio rights were signed, 1116 SEN and Crocmedia were two separate companies. After Crocmedia bought/merged with SEN (and parent company), SEN couldn’t take all 9 games because other Melbourne radio stations had exclusivity on them (like the 3pm Sunday arvo game).
So I assume the two call teams is based on that, a separate SEN and Crocmedia (AFLNation) call dictated by contracts.
Aaron Bryans said at the end of ABC broadcast tonight that the commentary team for Brisbane Lions v Richmond would be Quentin Hull, Brett Sprigg, Lauren Arnell and Brad Sewell, with Sprigg flying up from Sydney and Sewell driving up the highway from Byron Bay. The expansion of the border bubble to Byron Bay means the former Hawthorn star can travel to Brisbane without a permit.
I reckon some information is wrong because FiveAA will have its own commentary team for the Port-Tigers preliminary final at the Adelaide Oval, rather than taking AFL Nation’s call.
AFL Nation will provide two calls for Brisbane stations on Saturday - one for 4BH and one for SEN.
AFL nation always try to have a state-based call team for the local non-vic sides.
SEN and AFL nation will continue to have separate calls where contracts dictate. This is AFL nation choosing to have a national call and a QLD call. That’s their choice.
edit: In 2016, SEN signed on to broadcast 6 games. 4 would be SEN produced (Friday night, Saturday early Arvo, Saturday Night, Sunday Early Arvo) and 2 would be Crocmedia Syndication (Saturday Twilight and Sunday twilight). I’m assuming SEN were to produce all finals matches themselves. You can find this info on the AFL website.
Obviously since then Crocmedia bought and then rebranded to SEN, but for whatever reason contractually they must keep the calls separate.
Saturday’s preliminary final between the Lions and the Cats will be broadcast on analogue FM in Brisbane instead of NRL preliminary final between the Panthers and the Rabbitohs.
Quentin Hull flew from Brisbane to Adelaide to call tonight’s preliminary final between Port Adelaide and Richmond for ABC Radio. He and Brett Sprigg are calling both preliminary finals this weekend.
Former player and coach Terry Wallace has announced he is retiring from football media and list management after this Saturday’s AFL grand final, following Mike Sheahan. Wallace has been part of AFL Nation’s coverage for the past few years providing expert analysis.
SEN website suggests they are. No doubt they’ll take the SEN call (#2) rather than the AFL Nation syndicated call (#1).
Given they’re all SEN Track stations I’d say it’ll have something to do with the narrowcast restrictions: not sure what exactly that would entail, mind.
