AFL Coverage

Change of topic other than the ABC Commentary team did any of the commercial radio stations call last night’s Darwin game live from the venue.

3AW covered the Bris v Haw game, so they didn’t.

Triple M covered it, not sure where they covered it from but they’ve called Tassie games with the SA team in studio before so it wouldn’t surprise me if it was off the TV.

AFL Nation, not sure either. Terry Wallace called, yet did Crunchtime that morning and was back in Melbourne today to do Ess v Carl. Was the only game Foenander and Wotton called all weekend, likely it was off TV.

5AA also covered it, I doubt they sent their crew up to Darwin.

I’d say you’re right, ABC only crew covering it from Darwin, rest were done off TV.

Who called the Darwin game for ABC?

Joel Peterson and Neil Cross (I do mean Rob Cross here, honest) did play by play.
Rod Jameson and Thomas Motlop did special comments.
Charlie King was on the boundary.

So Seven(JB and Darcy) and ABC(Joel Peterson and Rob Cross) were the only callers in Darwin .

Rob Cross called with Joel Peterson in Darwin.

Cross used to do the SCG games for a while.

Yes, Rob Cross sorry. Too many Cross’s working for ABC Grandstand clearly!

I’d say that for the Gold Coast-Kangaroos match that Quentin Hull, Corbin Middlemas and Lauren Arnell will call that match for ABC. Maybe Al Nicolson or Matt Clinch could go there, but remember that ABC has a Melb based game beforehand. Joel Peterson on the Crows-Giants match likely.

There’s not that many broadcast facilities available at Marrara. I know that the last time I went there (Suns vs Bulldogs in 2011) the ABC and TV boxes were located in the main part of the Rioli Stand, and the Gold FM team were at the ground using a disused coaches box located about the half forward flank. I reckon for the Townsville game in a couple of weeks there would be even less with the main stand not as big and 2 radio stations (ABC and Gold FM Gold Coast relaying to the MMM network) covering the game on top of Fox.

Your’e saying that MMM Melbourne will take the Gold FM feed for that match, since the other two will be the Perth call team and a crew doing the Melbourne based match at night(maybe BT does that one). The Adelaide team will do the next 2 Thursday matches, i ownder if it will be Dittmar or Alice James doing the call with Breton Yates?

Last couple of years BT has flown over to call with either Dittmar or Dale Lewis (Yates is calling Greyhounds on Thursday Nights).

Some fun on 3AW tonight with Beva spending more time calling Ash Barty’s tennis match off the TV than calling the football. At one stage it was alternating between Dwayne Russell calling a bit of football and Beva calling a bit of tennis, until they realised Barty lost every point that Beva called so they got ex-Collingwood player and coach Tony Shaw to call the tennis instead. She seemed to suddenly come good with Shaw calling.

The commentator’s curse in action!

FiveAA called the Darwin game from the ground Rowe, Bickley and Goodings.

Is Goodings the one who replaced Dylon(now works for AFL nation)

Just been listening to a special from Grandstand for the 1979 VFL grand final. Had about 30 mins of highlights from the ABC Radio coverage led by Smokey Dawson, Clarke Hansen and Doug Bigelow and a chat with Smokey about the coverage back then. Interesting stuff, imagine it’ll pop up as a podcast on filler on Grandstand digital. Not ideal listening for Collingwood supporters.

Have you not heard of the Ludivico technique? :joy:

Yeah for football coverage he has replaced Kym Dillon who moved to SEN SA.

Will Goodings has been with FiveAA for a while doing breakfast and is now reading sport for Channel 10 Adelaide and now calling AFL.

So many studio calls this weekend.
Triple M did 2 (Suns/St Kilda and NM/GWS).
AFL Nation weren’t in Hobart either, had 2 different call teams too.
About time the AFL stepped in and put an end to this garbage, not sure if AFL Nation were open about being in Melbourne instead of Hobart but I know Triple M attempted to make it appear they were in Townsville and Hobart when they clearly weren’t.

Good luck! The AFL will take the money and they won’t care how Triple M commentate on the game. The NRL has the same issue too.

At least the NRL broadcasters let us know that it’s a studio call (I mean they wouldn’t send a team to NZ for a regular season game). MMM only do live calls from the ground at Sydney venues (they don’t even go to Newcastle or Wollongong, and have even called Cronulla CH9 games from the studio due to lack of boxes at times), Broncos home games that only go into Brisbane on FM, finals and origin. 2GB are the same using the “Interactive Studio”.
