Are you positive? Surely not in Nsw and Qld for Swans, Lions, Suns, Giants! Can’t imagine the AFL would’ve even entertained that thought, apparently a Foxtel sticking point with Gil McLachlan’s 2am negotiations and kebab showdown, which I thought Foxtel lost out on as they’ve always been highly protective of that clause, but got Saturday exclusivity (for half the season including Sa and Wa in terms of live), own commentators and graphics. Seven also got streaming of course.
That’s the info according to Lyon & Morris. There was no differentiating between WA/SA & NSW/QLD in the video, and for WA/SA is actually better in that the delay is ‘only’ two hours rather than three as it was previously.
Yeah, I remember that clause from when the deal was announced, combined 12 Saturday NSW/QLD games in the first 8 rounds (this was announced before Gather and Opening Rounds were a thing, so might be 10 now) to be on 2 hour delay in those states. SA/WA has another set of 12.
Yeah, just a shame they don’t let you into the TV booth on Street View. Wouldn’t have minded that.
Foxtel’s pull must’ve been stronger than I thought, didn’t think they’d go hard with that clause at all. Maybe it was the 7Plus thing that incensed them? And/or still allowing the non-Vic simulcast clause, depsite first number of rounds delayed. And I guess Seven get the big one, the GF exclusive also the Brownlow which was previously a Foxtel simulcast before 2017. Foxtel do pay the most bucks.
They do pay the larger share of the rights…
Foxtel didn’t get what they really wanted. Some full exclusive WA/SA matches back into that market.
Lies here about the Brownlow and GF not streaming on 7Plus last year.
I mean obvious with their employers but obvious anti-Seven bashing here.
Emphasis on the radio box thing is stupid, it’s not relevant or worthwhile focusing on.
Rich coming from Tom there lol
Essentially.
Ramped up for a few years then cut down for cost reasons I’d say.
And across the whole thing really, good company man as a shill.
None of this is revolutionary. They’re acting like it’s crazy massive world-first stuff when Fox/Nine League (and Fox/Seven Cricket) have been doing it for a long, long time.
Lyon says this is the case in the above video.
The AFL will land a modest new radio deal with all of its long-time rights holders after months of tense negotiations that threatened to leave the game without an FM broadcaster after Triple M refused to budge on its drastically cut-priced offer.
The AFL had entertained a seven-year multi-network radio contract ending in 2031 in line with the Seven-Foxtel-Telstra deal, then looked at five years, but has ultimately settled on a three-year term ending in 2027 in the hope commercial conditions will have improved by then.
Nine’s 3AW will call one extra game next season but pay proportionally less for the radio rights, although AFL insiders who would not be quoted due to commercial sensitivities said the final overall deal across all networks would be a small net gain on the last agreement.
One reason for the net gain is that the league will cut back on services to 3AW and Triple M such as hospitality at the Brownlow Medal, the grand final, the September Club and Gather Round.
SEN will continue to call every game over its various platforms and marginally increased its AFL deal. ABC Radio 774 will also continue to its decades-long relationship with the game along with Adelaide’s 5AA (Nova Entertainment) and K-Rock in Geelong.
Also would likely cover the ABC’s stations across the country, as well as ABC Sports Digital, and the listen app.
Interesting that ARN aren’t interested in the FM rights this time around.
Why would they be? It doesn’t align with their target demographic.
Back in 2016 they put in a bid to broadcast it on Gold. In Adelaide they’ve been simulcasting a couple SEN games a week on Cruise (albeit on AM) for the last couple years.
Given ARN wanted to buy Triple M and ditch their Pure Gold network to do that, it’s weird that they saw Triple M’s targetting of that demographic as such a strong opportunity for them, but wouldn’t try and seek the rights for their own station now that bid has fallen through.
The AFL had entertained a seven-year multi-network radio contract ending in 2031 in line with the Seven-Foxtel-Telstra deal, then looked at five years, but has ultimately settled on a three-year term ending in 2027 in the hope commercial conditions will have improved by then.
This would put them in line with the NRL rights deal - which would be interesting. If Crocmedia want more NRL product for SENQ/Sydney then they might need to put a lot more cash into there, at the expense of what they could offer the AFL.
I suppose if Nine get a TV rights share and make a sweetheart deal for radio rights part of it, then maybe that won’t matter, but if the AFL are hoping a deal in 2027 will bring them higher money, it’s probably pretty bad timing.
Hahahaha, that’s optimistic
But for Victorian audiences, that arrangement lasts longer, and extends to the first 15 rounds before Seven can broadcast Saturday night games live.
So it sounds like that after Round 8, for example, if Port, Crows, Swans etc have a Saturday night game, it will be shown live, rather than on delay.
As has been discussed, I guess that means in the first 8 rounds, the Giants, Swans, Suns, Lions, Dockers, Eagles, Crows and Power can only be fixtured three times on a Saturday each.
I guess that means a lot of local derbies will have to wait until Round 9 at the earliest, unless the AFL want to schedule them on a Sunday (or a Thursday night).
Well if interstate teams perform well, then they will be rewarded with more games in prime slots (i.e. Thursday & Friday nights). AFL controls fixturing, not Foxtel or Seven.
