AFL broadcast rights 2025-2031

I know this was a Fox game, but they don’t all live in Melbourne do they?

Most of Fox Footy’s people do. Pavlich, Papalia, Lynch & Ricciuto don’t live in Victoria, Lynchy does travel down to Sydney and Tasmania to do games on occasions though.

From someone who doesn’t watch much AFL it seems that there are disadvantages to the split network system or at least as it operates now with each network showing broadcasts produced by the other (as far as I understand it). So in QLD there might be a Lions games on Seven that is produced by Fox it comes without much pre- and post-match compared to Seven produced games or what might be of Fox Footy. If it was all with one network (say 10/Para) or the new rights meant there weren’t these joint telecasts it would be better for fans.

Tom Browne reported on Triple M today that his ‘external’ opinion is that Seven and Fox will remain the television rights holders to the AFL. He said he is not aware of any insider discussions and information at Seven.

He also reinforced the point that should Fox want a ‘Super Saturday’ of exclusive football, and say if Seven wants more Thursday nights in return, this could be difficult to achieve because the players will have to agree for shorter periods of days off between matches.

A mix of rolling byes (8 game weeks instead of 6/9 game weeks) and double header friday nights (starting at 6.50pm and 9.20pm) would get around having to change the 5 day break rule. Think that will change to 2-3 in the next EBA. Doesn’t need to be unlimited.

Game would have to be in Perth every week.

You just can’t play footy at 21:20 on a Friday night unless it’s in WA, players wouldn’t be keen on that in the Eastern states.

If this was to happen, it needs to be based on the Good Friday format that’s going on at the moment, with a 14:50 Seven Network game in Melbourne then a proceeding Fox broadcast game interstate in SA or WA following it at 19:50 or something. This allows for the FTA broadcaster to show their match, throw to news coverage and then if applicable, the simulcast of the Fox produced game.

Friday arvo football on a non public holiday is just silly. Gil known as a deal maker.

He will get the players to agree to more 5 day breaks allowing for Thursday night football.

I hope Channel 7 re bid for the AFL TV Rights from 2025 and show Friday Night Football, Saturday Night Football and Sunday Afternoon Football live and bring back Saturday Afternoon Football and go live in all around Australia and I hope Foxtel re bid for the AFL TV Rights from 2025 and show all AFL games live. I hope Melbourne’s Channel 7 show all the AFL games live and bring back Saturday Afternoon Football and go live into Melbourne. And I hope Channel 7 or 7mate show New South Wales teams live into Sydney, Queensland teams live into Brisbane, South Australian Teams live into Adelaide and Western Australian teams live into Perth.

that is a pipe dream at best, Fox will do everything in its power to get the full rights, with Saturdays and Sundays exclusive to them, as well as four finals matches, and the Grand Final to be telecast live on Fox Footy with their commentators.

If there was any such discussion of exclusive finals on Fox then you would have heard about it now in the Channel 7 paper and sunrise. Cue the outrage.

Clearly the main sticking point is how many Crows/Power Eagles/Dockers games exclusive to Fox/Kayo in those markets.

Nah no chance of this, all of Fox Footy’s Play by Play commentators call the GF for Radio, meaning they have no one to do for TV so if they did somehow acquire the rights to show the Grand Final live on their network.

That gives me an idea: in return for Fox’s Super Saturday, Seven will get every finals live and exclusive, no simulcast on Fox.

As one of a large number of satisfied Kayo customers, I’d strongly prefer it if Seven did not have any exclusive AFL games. It’s already bad with the 30 seconds of near silence or meaningless chat during the ad break after each goal on 7 games but it’s still better than watching ads.

But it probably wouldn’t be any less. Just on a different day.

It’d be 11 games less per year ie 66 compared to 77. It’s a definite and tangible decrease to an already diminished FTA presence.

Forgetting opening night (wed) and public holiday football.

Could say the same for Thursday and Friday nights that currently only have 7 commentary.

Doubt Fox would push hard for non-exclusive Grand Final rights though. It’s a single event that wouldn’t tick over many subscriptions and not valued as much for them as the exclusive rights would be valued over at 7 as a jewel in their crown

Only Speed. Other 3 Melb based.

Were they definitely there?
