This didn’t occur when 10 had the rights to AFL in the 00s and 10 was low watched then.
Also there will be no simulcast deals if paramount get the rights. All the rights are held in house and all revenue flows one way rather than the fractured nonsense that 7/fox have.
Yes, but we are talking about a different television landscape 15 /18 years ago. Also I think it’s safer to say 10 was in a lot healthier position then with a larger amount of tent poll programs to promote the AFL.
Yep, As much as they may have been the #3 of the commercial networks they felt so much stronger when they first got the AFL rights than they are now were it all feels really tacky and just flinging as many things at the wall as they can in hopes it works.
10s coverage was very good when they last had the rights but whose to say it would be as good if they hypothetically won the next contract. Also the 7 coverage has become dire over the last few years and it doesn’t help its headed up by the likes of Brian Taylor, James Taylor and Hamish neither of whom are good.
Like I said… the only way 10 will obtain the AFL rights would be if Paramount were to put in a ridiculously high bid and run this at a loss for 5 years. But I can’t see them doing this for long term gains to fix 10s performances.
There’ll be an ultimatum in any new deal for them to improve their coverage.
And IMO anyway, their coverage is still pretty good. It’s just suffered some major cost cutting during the pandemic that’s deteriorated quality and that’s already starting to turn this year with commentators returning to the ground and more cameras back again for example.
There hasn’t been any real buzz around other potential local options - all of the buzz has been about overseas options and 10. 10’s feels like a bit of a PR push to show everyone (including their American overlords to some extent) that they’re back in the game
As long as Ten management deliver their financial targets then the overlords have no reason not to be happy. One problem with Ten/Paramount getting the rights would be, because of how expensive they are, there is absolutely a possibility that it could screw their operation up, turn them from profitability to a loss maker, or force them to make cuts elsewhere in order to make it stack up for them.
If their owner lends them the money, they will expect increased returns from Ten within a short timeframe, I say that because Ten’s management will be saying to them that this would be a sure thing, like NFL on CBS.
Does not help there is so little data on A League’s performance to make a clear judgement on Ten’s performance to date, except that the total people numbers on Ten have been underwhelming, but that is only a fraction of the story.
There was even some discussion on Weekend Sunrise this morning about crowd numbers at the A-League. I know it’s completely unrelated to television numbers, but I can’t help but find the timing of this story very interesting.
The way Ten talks about themselves under their American overlord suggests to me that they’ve lost a lot of independence and have to get a fair amount approved by the ‘overlord’
I don’t think we’ll get the full story on performance - but I can’t imagine that anyone involved will be happy with the performance of the A-League
