AFL (2016-2024)

look, I love my swannies, but I don’t think they’re Australia’s team, and honestly, I don’t think there is such a thing as dubbing a singular club as “Australia’s team”.

I guess Adelaide does have a Lonsdale, industrial suburb with a population of 23.

Probably more likely sniffing something than sipping something…

Just to make it clear I don’t live, or have ever been, to any suburbs named Lonsdale.

Nor have I sniffed anything, or sipped lattes (hate coffee)

It’s a bit narrow-minded to think that Swans supporters only exist in ½ of Sydney and a little suburb in Melbourne.

The Swans have supporters (and members) right across Australia.

And I acknowledged that there are supporters of most teams in every town:

Every other team has some supporters right across the country too.

So doesn’t make the Swans “Australia’s team”.

1.5 - GWS are shared with, and can fuck off to, Canberra.

I’d call them Australia;s team to spite you. Could be worse, it could be Collingwood or the Bunnies.

Sorry I thought this was the AFL thread and not Boomer Facebook Memes

Uncle Colin IS the AFL.

I thought this was the AFL

For context, Uncle Collin is the person who does the Welcome to Country ceremonies for the finals (including the Grand Final) at the MCG.

And other games… ANZAC, Doug Nicholls…

Uncle Colin is also the lead singer of that 80s band who had that song Johhny be good.

Also, IIRC not one Carlton player or individual within the club was ever identified as a suspect in that club’s salary cap saga of 2002, which of course cost them much needed draft picks and hampered their on-field rebuild in the long term.

I also don’t think Denis Pagan would have foreshadowed the mess he entered when he was appointed Carlton coach at the end of the 2002 season (before the penalties were announced). Once those penalties were announced, he was never going to succeed as their coach and it would take a very long time for the club to recover from those draconian penalties.

That sounds like there was very little accountability within that club at the time. Surely someone at the club was responsible for making the decisions around contracts and managing the cap.
