AFL 2024: Education sessions not enough to prevent poor behaviour, says AFLPA boss

AFLPA boss Paul Marsh claims players are “starting to fall asleep” during meetings and need more than mandatory education workshops to learn how to behave appropriately.

7News Perth’s Ryan Daniels reports that North Melbourne is set to sign a deal to play two home games in WA each year from 2025 to 2027, against West Coast and Fremantle. And Bunbury could host an AFL match for the first time under the deal.

UPDATE 31/10

The Kangaroos are contracted to play four games in Hobart in 2025 as part of a longstanding sponsorship agreement with Tasmanian government-owned ferry operator TT-Line.

But the ABC understands that commitment will be cut in half, and North will play just two games at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval next year, ahead of a complete transition out of Tasmania at the end of the season.

The 2025 AFL fixture is set to be released on November 14.

I think WA would benefit more if they get NM to play an interstate (non WA) team as it would boost tourism

North Melbourne vs GWS would easily get tens of people to the oval in Bunbury

You could do a big Vic club like Collingwood or Carlton. The fans would travel plus it gives them another flight they need to take

A WA home team would generate more revenue than a Victorian only match.

None of the big Victorian teams are going to move home games to WA - only reason North Melbourne are doing this IMO is because given their performance last year, a home game in an away teams state in a regional town would generate more revenue for the club than a home game at Marvel would - plus I’m sure the WA Government would help finance it, including money for the club.

Yeah apparently it is 6 million over 3 years. I think this is norths next market since Tasmania is coming to an end. This is also part of the travel equality the afl are trying to fix. It will mean 2 less games WA teams need to travel for.

Demons forward Joel Smith has reportedly been handed a four-year ban following an investigation into claims he used and trafficked cocaine.

Smith was placed on a mandatory provisional suspension in October last year after testing positive for an illicit substance, with his dirty urine sample coming after a game between Melbourne and Hawthorn in August that year.

Further investigation from Sorts Integrity Australia led to a total of three Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADVRs) being asserted against Smith in February, including “Trafficking or Attempted Trafficking” of Cocaine to third parties.

According to the Herald Sun, Smith has been hit with a four-year suspension, which is expected to be announced by the SIA and the AFL on Friday (November 1).

I don’t mind the logo. I hope this change represents broader action from the Crows to be more daring and ruthless as they aim for finals in 2025. I would hate to see them stuck in the middle to bottom 6 yet again.

I suppose at least it’s not the “simple” kind of logo that swept European football, or adopting the “AFC” crest like their SANFL team.

I dunno how well it would work on the guernsey, but at least it still feels like a proper AFL team logo - and their current one does suck. I don’t get dropping the ‘Crows’ from the text though.

I can see the Suns doing the same kind of downplaying of their ‘mascot’ as well, and just more generally being just “Gold Coast”.
