Never knew, only though they were in the UK.

Gobbled up in Australia by the owners of Sanity about 15 years ago.

Before HMV there was Palings and Allans around the Pitt Street Mall area. I think they were both swallowed up by Brashs. There was an Angel Records too.

HMV expanded to every major suburban shopping centre, as well as Sanity. There was also Virgin music but I donā€™t think those stores were around a long time before all music stores started shutting up shop.

JB HiFi was s late starter but seems to be the only big survivor.

I remember the Virgin Music store in Pitt Street and at Darling Harbour well. I have a rather fetching photo of a female school friend straddling the huge Virgin logo outside that DH store taken when it opened in 1988.

Iā€™d forgotten about that Darling Harbour store. Thanks for the reminder. I can remember seeing a few local and overseas artists doing in-store appearances and signing CDs in Pitt Street store.

Canberra had Impact Records which was unparalleled, unfortunately swallowed up by JB Hi Fi and then left vacant after JB moved into the main shopping mall.

That was an awesome store. I remember they used to have everyone hand over their backpacks on the way in to be kept in a cube shelf behind the counter.

Anyone else here ever suffer from Bellā€™s Palsy? I now look like Ive had a stroke and Iā€™m in absolute hell. Not to mention the explanation I now have to give peopleā€¦any advice?

I hope you have consulted with a doctor?

Yes I have. I have to go in for more tests, but from their initial tests and what theyā€™ve asked and told me, all signs have pointed to Bellā€™s palsy. If it were a stroke, Iā€™d still be in Sydney.

First off, have you spoken to your supervisor about the issue before hand? If so, good - at least you can say youā€™ve made an attempt to talk to a supervisor.
Secondly, try and get statements from those other workers.
Thirdly, try and work out from those other workers if the glass and install of the front was a shopping centre management job or the tenants job. Because whoever did it has not done a good job and they should be responsible at some level.
Lastly, speak to someone specialising in workers compensation.

Yep, as above from ECC.

Was there anything you were doing before it shattered that could be attributed to your actions in a negative way? i.e. if you ran and took a jump into it, thatā€™s going to be used against you (pretty sure you didnā€™t though!)

Are there going to be any ongoing medical costs or treatments required? Did you need to pay for any of the expenses thus far yourself also?

Looks pretty nasty, hope youā€™re ok.

Yep, good point. Make sure thereā€™s nothing they can ping you on.

Keep receipts. Scan everything in. Keep paperwork.

What are you suing for? From the picture it doesnā€™t look like you were badly injured (were you taken to hospital? Is there any long term treatment/impact beyond a couple of bandaids?).

Best person to speak to would be a workers compensation lawyer (theyā€™ll usually offer a free initial consultation) but you might value keeping your job more over a small settlement of a few thousand dollars (of which a lawyer is going to take half anyway).

The better approach may be to hound management to ensure the root issue is fixed. If it isnā€™t then that may be the time to escalate the matter as you can demonstrate a culture of negligence.

Canā€™t those glass panels combust in the heat? Iā€™ve heard it happening before.

Again, good point. Donā€™t go in expecting thousands upon thousands of dollars. Try and aim for honest amounts of lost wages and any medical bills.

Iā€™m in the same boat at the moment and Iā€™m not aiming for a huge cash settlement, even though some people Iā€™ve spoken to said I could get a sizable chunk of cash, and fairly so. However, Iā€™m not aiming for thatā€¦I just want the issues fixed. Which leads toā€¦

This is the best outcome. If this has been ongoing, this should be a wake-up call to management.

I would be talking to a workers compensation lawyer. And I probably wouldnā€™t be posting too much on a public forum about the matter.

Given its a workplace injury your medical costs should be covered by a workers compensation scheme - seek this before any legal restitution

Thanks Gang for the advice, thereā€™s been a issue with them for years we have been told by management to be rough with the doors but not running and slamming them into each other just be firm and hit them into each other until they click in. So no where doing run ups and that. But considering it was close to 40 degrees last Sunday and the sunlight hits straight into the glass I can imagine that was a factor and seeing that a few have said they can combust it doesnā€™t surprise me too much.

The thing was is that they knew about these doors for a while having problems and another panel was chipped last year by a manager and no one flagged the issue (as far as I know of) but thereā€™s been issues with the roof in the store (cracks & leaks) and Head office knows about it but they refuse to fix the issue. So far Iā€™ve kept the medical receipts.

I received stitches to my thigh and wrist (just missed the tendons, Nerves and artery) but already have PTSD and anxiety from the past being in a house with domestic violence etc. so I donā€™t know how thatā€™s going to effect my mental state from now on. Which Iā€™m already on medication for and was improving from which feels like Iā€™ve gone back now from where I was.

EDIT: Iā€™ve removed the post for privacy reasons

I am just wondering what peopleā€™s thoughts are about income protection insurance? I donā€™t know a lot about it. But if I knew I was going to have to take a sizable amount of time out due to illness would it be worth taking it out?
