ABC NEWS announces Deep End: The Scott Miller Story –

From Olympic glory to criminal infamy — and back again.

ABC NEWS today announces Deep End: The Scott Miller Story, a compelling new two-part documentary premiering Monday 22 June at 8pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.

From the ABC News Documentary unit in partnership with Jam TV Australia, the series charts the dramatic rise and fall of Olympic swimmer Scott Miller, and his ongoing fight to rebuild his life. Once a golden boy of Australian sport, Scott Miller had it all: medals, fame, and a nation’s admiration. Then came personal tragedy and a fall into addiction, crime and eventually prison.

Now for the first time, Miller tells the unfiltered story and confronts the choices that derailed his life, the people he hurt, and the long road back from the brink.

Episode one charts his meteoric rise from a promising childhood to Olympic success and media stardom before the cracks begin to show. As the pressure mounts, his personal life implodes, his career ends abruptly and his life spirals into addiction.

Episode two follows his descent into the criminal underworld, his arrest and time behind bars, and the difficult path to redemption. Now clean and reunited with his family, Miller faces his toughest challenge yet: rebuilding trust, reclaiming purpose, and returning to the pool.

Raw, confronting and deeply human, Deep End: The Scott Miller Story is an exploration of fame, failure and the fight for a second chance.

2027 ABC Heywire Competition Opens Today

Heywire Showcasewinners at APH

Zein, a young woman from Wollongong, NSW on Dharawal Country and a Heywire alumna, is encouraging young people across regional Australia to share their stories by entering the 2027 ABC Heywire storytelling competition, which officially opens today.

“Heywire proved to me that no matter where you’re from, your perspective is valuable and deserves to be heard,” Zein said.

Zein used her Heywire platform to talk about her experience as a refugee, and how language, culture and belonging have shaped her identity in Australia. She said the experience helped her feel proud of her story.

“It was an incredible experience to see my story reach people across the country, shed awareness on the experiences of other refugees and help others feel less alone in their search for personal identity.” Zein said.

“I hope other regional youth take this chance to share their truth. It’s a powerful way to make an impact and spark real change in your community.”

Now in its 28th year, the ABC’s Heywire Competition invites Australians aged 16 to 22 living outside the capital cities to submit true stories reflecting their lives in regional, rural, or remote communities. Winning stories are produced by the ABC and broadcast across ABC TV, Radio National, triple j, ABC Local Radio, and ABC iview.

For Jeremy, a proud First Nations young man from Katherine in the NT on Dagoman Country, Heywire gave him a platform to share a deeply personal story of grief, resilience and purpose, and how he has channelled that experience into supporting his community.

“I loved the opportunity to be able to share my story on a national scale,” Jeremy said.

“I’ve already had so many young Territorians telling me they want to do the same things I do, and how much inspiration they got from my story. I would love to see more kids from NT communities have their stories represented on such a platform.”

Zein and Jeremy are two of 35 young Australians who worked with ABC producers last year to share their stories nationally and connect with a growing network of youth advocates and changemakers.

ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks encouraged young Australians living in regional communities to share their stories, helping Australians understand life beyond the cities.

“Heywire continues to highlight the creativity, resilience and insight of young people across regional and rural Australia,” Mr Marks said. “Each year, we’re inspired by the powerful stories and ideas that emerge from communities right across the country.”

“For almost three decades, the ABC has been proud to champion these voices and provide a national platform where young regional Australians can be heard. We can’t wait to discover the fresh voices and stories that this year’s cohort will bring.”

Senator, the Hon Jenny McAllister, Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme wants young rural and regional Australians to step forward and enter the competition.

"I grew up in regional NSW, and I know young Australians living in these communities have powerful stories to tell.

"The Albanese Government is proud to back Heywire, so young people in the regions, especially those with disability, are celebrated across the nation.

“From Longreach to Launceston, we want to hear from you.”

Submit your entries through the Heywire website by September 1, 2026.

Heywire is supported by the Australian Government through The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts, The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, the Office for Youth, Australia’s Disability Strategy, The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing and AgriFutures Australia.
