###How To Stay Young

From Tuesday 5 July at 8:30pm

This two-part series goes on a remarkable journey into the human body and mind and investigates the latest experiments and research that could help put the brakes on ageing.

In the last five years the science of getting older has come of age. Game-changing breakthroughs are redefining the way we think about ageing. More than ever, there is hope that we can overcome our greatest enemy – the process of biological decline.

Angela Rippon and Dr Chris van Tulleken investigate the latest experiments and research that could help put the brakes on ageing.

###New Blood

From Thursday 14 July at 8:30pm

Two young investigators take on the establishment in this fast-paced drama from multiaward-winning author and screenwriter, Anthony Horowitz (Foyle’s War). Brimming with action, intrigue and wit, with seven episodes, New Blood is a completely fresh take on contemporary crime.

Rash (Ben Tavassoli) and Stefan (Mark Strepan) are two guys in their mid-twenties, stuck at the bottom of the career ladder. One is a trainee police detective, the other a very junior investigator at the Serious Fraud Office. They’re both short of cash, struggling with the high cost of London living. Rash’s parents were born in Iran, Stefan’s in Poland. They’re first generation British – but still outsiders.

They’ve never met. But when they’re brought together by two apparently unrelated cases, they find themselves involved in a worldwide conspiracy. There are bombs, car chases and machine-gun-wielding assassins hot on their heels. They soon realise that together is the only way to survive.

In 21st Century London, a new breed of criminal hides behind legitimate facades of business and government. Rash and Stefan must combine their skills to bring them down. They are opposites in almost every way, but as their friendship develops they realise they can take on the rich and powerful. Just as long as they don’t get themselves fired first.

In the first episode, six years have passed since a sinister drugs trial in India took place and one of the participants is found dead. Eager young PC Rash Sayyad is sure it’s murder and not suicide as initially ruled. An impressed DS Sands (Mark Addy) offers him a trainee detective position, but as they begin to work on the case, Senior Fraud Office investigator Stefan Kowolski is gathering intelligence on a hospital pharmacist – eventually drawing him into the same case.

Eleventh Hour Films Production for BBC 2

I don’t understand how the ABC can give a BBC drama an 8.30pm Thursday timeslot but give first run Australian drama Cleverman a 9.30pm spot.

###Grand Designs New Zealand

From Sunday 17 July at 7:40pm

Architects often say that building in New Zealand comes with two main challenges – it rains and it shakes. But the weather and seismic activity also provide New Zealand with a wealth of dramatic landscapes, which in turn require creative approaches to building.

Combine this with a culture of DIY and you have the perfect fodder for the first New Zealand series of Grand Designs.

Hosted by architect Chris Moller, whose fascination with urbanism brings a new perspective on how building choices shape and reflect who New Zealanders are and how they want to live, Grand Designs New Zealand features a mix of fascinating stories of ambitious and innovative homebuilders trying to realise their dreams.

CHRIS MOLLER
Chris Moller is an internationally award-winning architect based in Wellington, and the host of the very first Grand Designs New Zealand.

Having studied at Industrial Design School in Wellington, then Architecture School in Auckland, Chris spent the formative years of his career in Europe.

He now runs his own practise CMA+U (Chris Moller Architecture + Urbanism), working on several projects based around a pre-fabricated building technique he has invented called “Click Raft”.

Moller believes architecture shapes the way we live, how we feel, our health and well-being.

“It also has a deep influence and impact on the planet”, he says. “Our approach to architecture and the way we make our environments is central to solving the big challenges of our time and therefore to our long term survival as a species.”

Eight-part series.

###Scott & Bailey - Season 5

From Friday 22 July at 9:30pm

Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp return as Rachel Bailey and Janet Scott in this drama series exploring the personal and professional lives of two Manchester detectives. This time around Janet and Rachel investigate the sinister world of the Darknet, a place that offers complete anonymity to its users.

A ruthless game is being played – one man challenges another to murder, leaving a chalk mark at the scene as proof. The images are loaded to a website and the baton is passed to the next killer. As more chalk marks are left, identifying more victims, will Janet and Rachel be able to stop these vicious killers before it’s too late?

When the body of teenager Will Hudson is found in a park, Rachel (Jones) knows that his death could have been prevented. With information about the ‘Taking Out the Trash’ website in the public domain, monitoring potential targets has been severely compromised. As Jenna (Nisa Cole) is placed under police protection, Syndicate 9 is no closer to pinning anything on Steve Dench (Richard Riddell) or Kenny Medford (Antony Flanagan).

Neither could have killed Hudson, but this does not rule them out of the other murders. Rachel believes that the person who nominates the victim is the one with the connection, but until those links can be made, she is forced to release Kenny on bail.

When Rachel receives an email containing video footage of Hudson’s murder, it becomes clear that the rules of the game have changed and her own safety is in question. The discovery that Kenny is AWOL from the Royal Artillery has catastrophic consequences that leave her boss Dodson (Pippa Haywood) questioning Rachel’s actions. As a police officer, Janet (Sharp) is powerless to protect her daughter Taisie (Harriet Waters), but she knows that she needs to stop the madness.

The Katering Show - Season 2

From Wednesday 3 August at 9:10pm

Food intolerant Kate McCartney and her intolerable smug foodie co-host Kate McLennan return – this time to ABC TV – with series 2 of The Katering Show.

In series two, McCartney and McLennan take a Sassy Swipe™ at the over-hyped food trend of Ramen; they take the term “Yummy Mummy” way too literally; they sample a tablet that counteracts lactose intolerance in an episode dubiously cleverly titled It Gets Feta; they subject themselves and a special guest to the latest weight loss torture regimes of Paleo, Raw Food and The 5:2 Diet; and they dedicate an episode to their culinary hero and spirit bosom, Maggie Beer, where they peddle their own noxious version of verjuice.

But The Kates are aiming to give back too; to use their position as attractive celebrity chefs and trained actors to change the world. First, they’ll use their no talent to address the important issue of marriage equality. McLennan will then check her white privilege by generously inviting The Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng into the kitchen in an episode that highlights both McLennan’s sunny bigotry and her lack of star power.

And finally The Kates will solve climate change - and the cracks in their relationship - by cooking with kitchen scraps from the series in their celebratory End of Days farewell.

Of course, the entire flirty little series is peppered with references to The Kates’ crumbling personal situations; including, but not limited to, McCartney’s rat piss soaked rental property and McLennan’s endless bouts of ‘in-knicker’ infections.

###You Can’t Ask That

From Wednesday 3 August at 9:20pm

Was Season 1 of The Katering Show screened on television or just online?

ABC only ever reported it being shown on i-view, and the release says “this time to ABC TV”.

Cool. Thanks.

I heard that they had overseas interest and one problem was the first series had episodes of varying lengths. That’s probably why they did a proper series this time, having overseas sales in mind
