Updated 07/01/2021

I saw an interesting short film on ABC TV at lunchtime today. It was called Groundhog Night and it was part of Re-Frame, an anthology of short films made by people disability. It was hosted by Bridie McKim, the young actress from The Heights, who spoke to those involved in interview links between the movies.

Groundhog Night featured some big name actors too like Robyn Nevin, John Batchelor, Chris Haywood, Susan Prior and Emily Dash. Apparently, the writer/actress Genevieve Clay-Smith is working on turning this short film into a series. I quitd enjoyed it and I hope that happens.

Re-Frame was produced for the International Day of People with a Disability and has been available on iview. Did it ever screen in prime time? I don’t remember seeing anything about it.

Although, I was a bit shocked that this program screened in a daytime school holidays slot on ABC TV with some of the adult content and F-bomb language.

Quoll Farm

Sunday 14 February at 7:40pm

In a distant corner of Tasmania lives a remarkable animal, the Eastern quoll; a rare and wonderful marsupial. Long extinct on the Australian mainland, their numbers are declining in Tasmania, their last refuge. Invasive predators, a changing climate and human encroachment threaten their numbers. Soon these animals could be lost for ever. Simon Plowright, a naturalist and filmmaker, spends a year on an abandoned farm in a hidden valley looking into their world and uncovering their secrets. His quest is to discover if humans and animals can find a way to co-exist. This is a story about a family of quolls, and one man’s extraordinary devotion to save them……and sometimes against all the odds, magic happens.

Simon has dedicated his life to understanding and protecting Tasmania’s unique wild life. He spent decades trying to protect Tasmanian devils in the state’s northwest, and was heartbroken watching their numbers decline as humans moved in. When he heard about an old abandoned farmhouse deep in the heart of the beautiful Tasmanian bush, he packed his bags and moved in to learn more about these little-studied wild creatures. Living alone in the wilderness may seem like an extraordinary step, but Simon knows this is a unique opportunity to study this enigmatic and often misunderstood marsupial, and more importantly, to see if there is a way he can help them survive. Is it just possible that given a chance they would choose to live alongside us?

Silent Witness - Season 23

From Sunday 14 February at 9:40pm 10 episodes

Dr Nikki Alexander and the team at the Lyell Centre must solve five more thrilling mysteries in this award-winning crime drama. A body in the concrete pillar of a car park. A downed plane. Scientific research gone wrong. The cases that end upat the Lyell Centre are rarely straightforward. Initial suspicions are challenged as the evidence mounts, and Nikki and the team must work harder than ever to find the truth.

Grand Designs New Zealand - Season 5

From Sunday 21 February at 7:40pm

Host Chris Moller meets a range of creative and enterprising New Zealanders taking on the challenge of building their own unique homes. The series follows the people determined to make their dream home a reality, as they grapple with extremes of geography, adverse weather, and escalating costs to deliver such diverse and inspirational projects as a medieval castle and a glass home built over a stream.

Episode One: Burnt Timber Pavilion
Auckland couple Shane and Tina Nicholls plan to build a house using the ancient Japanese method of burnt timber called Yakisugi. Add in 25,000 Scandinavian bricks, a memorial garden, stunning Hauraki Gulf views, a wine cellar, a pool, and it will be a truly international home of epic proportions.

Firestarter: The Story of Bangarra snapped up in pre-sale deal

ABC Commercial has announced a pre-sale of the highly acclaimed feature length documentary Firestarter: The Story of Bangarra (HD1 x 90’ & HD1 x 60’) to Sweden’s public broadcaster for their SVT2 and SVT Play platforms.

Already winning several awards in its home country, Firestarter marks Bangarra Dance Theatre’s 30th anniversary. Taking us through the company’s birth and spectacular growth, the film recognises Bangarra’s founders and also tells the story of how three young Aboriginal brothers — Stephen, David and Russell Page — turned the newly born dance group into a First Nations cultural powerhouse.

But as the story reveals, the company’s international success came at a huge personal cost. Through the eyes of the brothers and company alumni, Firestarter explores the loss and reclaiming of culture, the burden of intergenerational trauma, and – crucially – the power of art as a messenger for social change and healing.

This captivating film features a combination of intimate observational material, combined with candid interviews and a treasure trove of archival footage – revealing the indigenous dance company’s incredible rise and triumph against the odds.

ABC Commercial’s Head of Content Sales & Distribution, Jessica Ellis said “We are incredibly proud to be partnering with SVT on this exceptional documentary. The interest surrounding the program prior to its distribution launch at Avant Première has been phenomenal. Audiences from film festival screenings have embraced and celebrated this stunning addition to ABC Commercial’s Arts slate”.

In Films’ Managing Director and Executive Producer, Ivan O’Mahoney said: “Bangarra Dance Theatre is one of Australia’s best loved performing arts companies, with a huge following overseas, especially in North America and Europe. Bangarra tell vital stories – both ancient and modern – of Indigenous Australia in an accessible, beautiful, way. It has been a privilege to make the film.”

Produced by In Films and directed by Wayne Blair (The Sapphires) and Nel Minchin (Matilda & Me, Making Muriel), Firestarter: The Story of Bangarra won Best Documentary at the 2020 AACTA Awards and both Best Documentary and the inaugural Change Award at the 2020 Adelaide Film Festival.

Set to perform strongly on the global festival circuit, Firestarter will have its international theatrical premiere on 28 Feb 2021 at The Pan African Film + Arts Festival in Los Angeles. It will premiere on SVT2 in mid-2021.

Schedule update

It will be the new season premiere of One Plus One, followed at 10.05pm by the FTA premiere of Foxtel documentary Aussie Inventions That Changed the World. It debuted on History channel in June 2019.
