Shetland - Season 4

image|60x

From Sunday 26 May at 7:40pm

A detective mystery set against the stunning Scottish backdrop of the Shetland Isles.

Shetlander, Thomas Malone, has his conviction overturned after 23 years behind bars, DI Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall) must re-open a murder investigation.

In 1993, teenager Lizzie Kilmuir was found strangled and placed in a stone cairn on the island of Unst. Malone, then only a teenager himself, was jailed for the crime. Now new DNA evidence has come to light provoking Malone’s release, but many islanders still believe him to be guilty, including some officers amongst Perez’ own team.

Malone’s return coincides with the murder of local journalist Sally McColl. Sally is the daughter of the detective who originally investigated Lizzie Kilmuir’s murder and was responsible for having Malone convicted. With two cases to solve and Malone very firmly in the frame for both, the pressure is on Perez to look beyond the gossip and prejudice and get to the truth.

Has Malone fooled the system into releasing him only to murder again? Or was he a victim of a miscarriage of justice, whose very presence on the island now makes him seem guilty - distracting the police from another potential killer? As the cases become increasingly complex, taking Perez and Tosh over the sea to Norway and into the murky world of far right extremist groups, Perez is stretched to the limit both personally and professionally. Dogged as ever and determined not to give up, he continues to close in on the truth, but his world is rocked when the investigation leads him closer to home than he could ever have imagined.

China’s Artful Dissident

image|60x

Tuesday 4 June at 9:30pm

On the 3Qth anniversar y of the June 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, CHINA’S AR TFUL DISSIDENT shadows a Chinese political artist in exile as the artist clandestinely protests China’s abuse of human rights and its cover-up of the horrlfk slaughter of innocent students in 1989.

Inspired by Tank Man - the Lone protestor who stared down a convoy of Red Army tanks in Tiananmen - the artist travels the globe meeting sur vivors and fel ow dissidents who share powerful first-hand testimonies.

Uke Banksy, the artist remains incognito, but unlike Banksy his life and that of his fami y are at stake, as the Chinese authorities - desperate to prevent his political art breaching their Great Firewall close in on his identity.

As the global balance of power shifts from America to China in the 21st Centur y,CHINA’S AR TFUL DISSIDENT shines a timely spotlight on Beijing’s continued whitewashi ng of the Tiananmen massacre and subsequent human rights abuses.

Tonight’s line-up has been pushed back by 10 minutes, due to an extended edition of 7.30.
EDIT: Escape from the City started at 8.30pm after late finish to 7.30 due to the death of former prime minister Bob Hawke.

The Bikes of Wrath

image|60x

Sunday 30 June at 9:30pm

Five Australian friends attempt to cycle 2600kms from Oklahoma to California in honour of the mighty westward migration undertaken by ‘The Grapes of Wrath’s’ Joad family.

Through chance encounters with everyday Americans, the cyclists explore the novel’s core themes - migration, inequality and the perceived Land of opportunity- and how the nation has progressed some 78 years after Steinbeck’s Dust Bowl depiction was first published.

It is through countless acts of generosity from small-town individuals and communities, to desolating encounters with ‘unwanted’ Americans, that the cyclists experience first-hand the startling parallels of the novel in a country still grappling with immigration, wealth disparity and, ultimately, its own sense of identity.

The Bikes of Wrath couldn’t be more timely. It’s a funny, heartbreaking, yet ultimately hopeful documentary that opens our eyes to the complexities of America, all while shining a positive Light on the nation at a time when the world needs it most.
