###Fukushima

From Monday 19 December at 9.30pm

ABC Correspondent Mark Willacy was one of the first journalists on the scene after the double headed tsunami and nuclear disaster in 2011 and has reported on it extensively since.

Fukushima is a one hour ABC News special that follows on from his award-winning report on Foreign Correspondent earlier this year.

It’s like a postcard of rural Japan… lush forests, waterfalls and bubbling streams; quaint villages where pink cherry blossoms festoon the streets.

But there’s a grotesqueness here. Houses that rang with the sounds of life and laughter are being swallowed by weeds and vines; inside they are choked by cobwebs and dust.

This is the countryside of Fukushima. Five years after the nuclear meltdown dozens of ‘ghost towns’ surrounding the stricken nuclear plant remain full of radiation and are virtually empty of people.

In contrast, the stricken Fukushima plant itself is thronging with activity. About 6500 courageous workers toil to contain the radiation but, as former Japan Correspondent Mark Willacy reports, it could scarcely be said that they are winning.

Fukushima is an unmissable forensic investigation into this century’s worst nuclear disaster and a personal journey in which Willacy returns to visit the people he has met during his five years of reporting the issue.

Walliams and Friend has more than 1 episode , is the ABC only airing it on the 21st ?

Only one episode scheduled so far.

As well as the changes to ABC HD, it appears that they’re now using a new CC icon at the start of programs:

In comparison, the old one:

As minor as this is, the question has to be asked: Could we possibly be looking at a hint of further things to come with the On-Air Presentation of the ABC’s main channel in 2017?

Afterall, we already know that ABC News & Local Radio will be getting a branding refresh next year and it is well worth remembering that over the last 10-15 years or so, the ABC has typically relaunched the general branding of it’s main TV channel approximately every three years or so. The current “#ourABC” branding will be three years old next July, so…

###Call the Midwife - Season 5

From Wednesday 4 January at 8:30pm

The hugely successful series starring Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Helen George, and Linda Bassett returns with more touching and compelling stories from the nurses and nuns of Nonnatus House.

Easter approaches, and for the nuns and midwives of Nonnatus House it’s as busy as ever as babies are born to myriad families across the borough.

One such delivery brings with it its own set of shocks, as Patsy (Emerald Fennel) helps experienced mother Rhoda Mullucks give birth to a baby with severe deformities, with no clear explanation. As the mother refuses to reject her new-born child, the father struggles to come to terms with the harsh realities of his daughter’s problems. Support and intervention from Sister Mary Cynthia (Bryony Hannah), Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) and Shelagh (Laura Main) proves invaluable as they try to rebuild this loving family.

Meanwhile, the new exercise craze has reached Poplar, led by Nonnatus’ very own Trixie (Helen George). As she begins teaching a keep-fit class, she’s surprised when the exercises lead to a medical emergency for one of her group. The experience leads her to realise that women sometimes lack a basic understanding of their own bodies, and she aims to rectify it, one patient at a time.

###Death in Paradise - Season 5

From Saturday 4 February at 7:30pm

With a new team firmly in place, DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) is finally making himself at home on the beautiful island of Saint Marie. But he can’t help feeling that something’s missing from his life. When he decides buying a boat might be the plan, Dwayne (Danny John-Jules) correctly diagnoses a mid-life crisis – that the real root of Humphrey’s malaise is a lack of love life.

For the ever-analytical Humphrey, romance is just another puzzle to be pulled apart by the
power of logic. Confident there’s a formula to finding love, he enlists the help of Florence (Joséphine Jobert), only to discover the complexities of dating are more confusing than any case he’s tried to crack.

Humphrey’s deductive powers may not be much use on the singles scene but, back on the job, his considerable intellect and experience are tested to the full. From a model strangled straight after coming off the catwalk, to a poisoning in which Commissioner Patterson himself is implicated, these are some of Saint Marie’s most perplexing murders yet.

###Ice Wars

From Tuesday 17 February at 8:30pm

The four-part documentary series Ice Wars, will premiere on Tuesday February 7 at 8.30pm on ABC and ABC iview.

Australia has a problem with Crystal Methamphetamine. Street name: Ice.

Filmmakers Northern Pictures had unprecedented access to NSW Police Anti-Ice operations in metropolitan as well as rural and remote communities. The series reveals the scope of the challenges facing law enforcement, health workers, users and the community as they try to mitigate, if not eradicate, the effects of Ice use in Australia.

Police co-operation with the program makers means that viewers are left in no doubt as to the size of the problem.
The struggle of health workers to help their patients in the face of increasing drug use and often limited resources, points to an array of possible solutions that can only be achieved by informed discussion leading to good policy and political action.

We hear from Australians who have battled Ice personally or with their family and community and we hear from the police who must plan and execute their anti-Ice strategies daily.

A small Ice lab in an ordinary suburban home is dismantled by the drug squad, with the police left to clean up the mess. In every case, whether it’s a suspected dealer working out of a pub, a small lab in a garage or a large scale operation awash with cash and drugs, and protected by guns, evidence gathering must be meticulous if police are to gain a conviction for something more serious than possession.

A woman in the Sunshine Coast hinterland decides to rent out her granny flat to make a bit of extra money. When her health deteriorates, she discovers her new tenant is not a chef, but an Ice cook, whose midnight kitchen concoctions are making her ill.

Every day of the week, first responders like Ashley Baker, who manages the Mental Health Trauma Unit in Blacktown Hospital, must try to assess and stabilize, then balance the care options for Ice users who are in extreme distress, with concerns for community safety.

As former World Surfing Champion Tom Carroll attests, Ice filled a void in his life but stole everything he valued at the same time.

Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie reveals the story of her fight to save her son Dylan from Ice addiction. She points to the despair and low self esteem experienced by many of his generation, fuelled by a lack of opportunity and jobs.
Young men and women in regional communities like Wellington, Lismore and Nowra in NSW, are especially vulnerable to Ice for the same reasons. When Ice comes to town, it’s hard to kick it out. Reformed user Barry from Wellington puts it succinctly: “Every second house is dealing, kids are using, it’s shocking.” Ice Wars tells an important and urgent Australian story affecting our community that we all need to understand and address.

Ice Wars (4x60 minute factual series) is a Northern Pictures production in association with ABC, Screen Australia and Screen NSW. Executive Producers: Sue Clothier, Alex Hodgkinson and Karina Holden. ABC Head of Factual, Steve Bibb.

###No Offense - Season 2

From Thursday 16 February at 9.30pm

The unorthodox crack team of gobby cops all return at full-throttle, headed up by the brilliant blonde bonce Spartacus warrior DI Viv Deering, (Joanna Scanlan), impulsive and street-smart DC Dinah Kowalska (Elaine Cassidy) and neurotic DS Joy Freers (Alexandra Roach).

Joining the team this season is the younger, hyper aspirational new boss, Detective Superintendent Christine Lickberg (Sarah Solemani) and office manager Gavin (Conor MacNeill) – loved by the guys and hated by the girls on the team.

At their sides in the crumbling Friday Street cop-shop are: unshakeable DC Spike (Will Mellor), maverick Miller (Paul Ritter), cool PC Stuart (Tom Varey), calm PC Taz (Neet Mohan), mischievous PC Jonah (Ste Johnston) and the force of nature that is PC Tegan (Saira Choudhry), who all go above and beyond the call of duty to get the job done.

In an explosive start to the second series screening Thursday February 16, 9.30pm on ABC & ABC iview, Deering is thrust head to head against a ferocious and unpredictable matriarch, Nora Attah (Rakie Ayola) and her volatile son Manni (Zachary Momoh), one of Manchester’s most feared crime families – The Attahs. Viv is determined to broker peace but firebombs rain down thrusting the city back to the dark days of its “Gunchester” past. Viv and the Friday Street squad go all out to bring those responsible to justice and the battle for the streets of Manchester begins…

An Abbottvision production from BAFTA Award-winning writer and producer Paul Abbott for Channel 4 - (7 x 50 minute episodes).

###Grand Designs - Season 14

From Sunday 5 February at 7:40pm

The brand new series of Grand Designs is as enthralling and ambitious as ever. It opens with a gravity defying three storey tree house in Gloucestershire – built by two nature lovers determined to live life high up in the branches.

To follow there’s a giant house of fun near Horsham, complete with secret doorways and hidden passages. There are twin 21st century farm buildings in Devon and a unique home on the edge of the Lancashire moors inspired by drystone walls. Hidden away in an Essex woodland there’s a sleek black bunker-like home designed for an artist, and in rural Pembrokeshire a hand crafted recycled house built for less than thirty thousand pounds. And that’s not forgetting the astonishing Cornish home made with beautiful flowing steam bent ash.

Kevin McCloud is on hand to witness all the twists and turns experienced by those willing to put everything on the line to build their once in a lifetime homes.
