Joanna Lumley’s Spice Trail Adventure

image

From Sunday 29 October 7.30pm

Joanna sets off to one of her most epic voyages yet. In this episode she is heading to a remote Indonesian island, Banda, which was once the only place on earth where nutmeg grew.

Discover the fascinating origins and histories of our staple spices as actor Joanna Lumley travels halfway across the globe on an epic culinary voyage.

Lumley takes an intrepid 15,000-mile voyage from the remote Banda Islands in Indonesia to the stunning natural landscapes of Jordan in the Middle East, revealing the story of how West met East and how the battle to control the cultivation and sale of spices dictated the course of history for centuries.

Following in the footsteps of pharaohs, crusaders, explorers and kings – and tasting spice-laden dishes along the way – Joanna traces an ancient route that crosses two continents and the Indian Ocean, taking in remote islands, jungles, mountains and the arid plains of the Middle East where she ends her journey.

In episode one, Joanna is heading to a collection of remote Indonesian islands, so small that her first challenge is finding them on the map. The Banda Islands were once the only place on earth where nutmeg grew. Joanna meets a family who make their living from harvesting them, she uncovers the dark history of Banda’s past and discovers that Banda’s charms once attracted A listers, including Mick Jagger. In the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta Joanna finds out what the attraction is of the 200 million clove cigarettes that are smoked in Indonesia every day. She pops into a cool speakeasy bar to taste a cocktail that is all about the spice and ends up discovering a newfound love of Indonesia’s national pop music.

Professor Michelle Simmons explores “The Atomic Revolution” in her first Boyer Lecture

Professor Michelle Simmons, who this week was awarded the top honour at the Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science, will trace the path from the discovery of the atom to the race to create the world’s first quantum computer in her first Boyer Lecture, The Atomic Revolution on Thursday 19 October.

Her lecture will reflect on what started out a quarter century ago as frontier science to test the bounds of what was technically possible. In that time, she has demonstrated the ability to manipulate atoms into working atomic-scale devices and created a clear pathway for making a quantum computer.

Professor Simmons said “This is a story that links fundamental physics with extraordinary technological advancement and the future of computing. It is also largely an Australian story.”

“My team’s ability to make electronic devices at the level of single atoms puts us at the very forefront of this field and has given us a unique opportunity to build a quantum computer here in Australia.”

“Current estimates suggest that 40% of our economy has the potential to be impacted by quantum computing and that the global quantum computing opportunity could be worth $150 billion per annum by 2040.”

“My team and I are now on a mission to use our atomic assembly technology to build a prototype quantum computer for which all the functional elements are manufactured and controlled at the atomic scale.”

The Atomic Revolution with Professor Simmons will screen live on ABC TV and ABC iview on Thursday 19 October at 8pm. ABC RN will broadcast the four Boyer lectures weekly from Sunday 22 October at 9.30am and anytime on ABC listen.

Evacuation

image

From Monday 13 November 8.30pm

The exclusive and incredibly moving inside story of Operation Pitting: the British Military’s life-or-death race to bring thousands to safety in the evacuation from Afghanistan.

In 2021, the world watched as the British armed forces undertook the largest air evacuation since World War II

Amidst the chaos, confusion and constant threat from Taliban forces in the urgent last days of the war in Afghanistan, over 1,000 UK military personnel were sent to evacuate over 5,000 British nationals and 8,000 Afghans – including thousands of children, with the youngest just one day old.

This three-part documentary series weaves visceral, intimate, raw story-telling with unseen Ministry of Defence archive footage, using unprecedented personal testimony from UK soldiers, as well as Afghans, on the ground in the frenzied evacuation of Kabul.

In tonight’s episode:
When allied forces begin to return home from Afghanistan, the Taliban start taking back parts of the country. A small team of British military are sent out to prepare for a possible evacuation, and a group of elite soldiers are put on standby to deploy, but nobody knows quite what to expect. Suddenly, the Taliban shock the world by taking the capital Kabul, unleashing chaos on the runway and in the airspace. The military scramble to clear the airfield of thousands of panicked civilians who have broken through. Will they be able to regain control so they can start the evacuation?

Rose Gold

Tuesday 14 November 8.30pm

Go behind the scenes with iconic Australian sportsman Patty Mills and the Australian Basketball “Boomers” to understand what it takes to build a team culture capable of taking them to a history-making Olympic medal.
On 7 August 2021, the Australian men’s basketball team, the Boomers, defeated European powerhouse Slovenia 107–93 at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. That win earned them a podium spot, behind the US and France, a ‘rose gold’ bronze medal that capped a decade of rebuilding and broke a 65-year streak of agonising near-misses.

Rose Gold is not only a behind-the-scenes look at how the Boomers achieved their first ever international medal, but also the story of basketball, long the outsider in a modern and diverse Australia.

First time feature director and former basketballer, Matthew Adekponya weaves behind-the-scenes footage from his years embedded with the team, with exclusive interviews from coaches, commentators, and a star-studded line-up of Australian and NBA players including Patty Mills, Joe Ingles, Andrew Gaze, Andrew Bogut and Matisse Thybulle. Rose Gold is an unmissable, insiders’-view of an unforgettable moment in Australian sport and a thrilling account of brotherhood that saw Australia held up on the world stage.

Yakka: Australia At Work

image

From Tuesday 21 November 9.00pm

From working the land, to digging up minerals, from manufacturing to the services industry, this series explores how work has shaped Australia from the Second World War to the present.

From working the land, to digging up minerals, from manufacturing to the services industry, Yakka: Australia At Work explores how work has shaped Australia from the Second World War to the present.

Each episode is themed around a particular form of work. The first, SOIL & TOIL, is about agriculture and how, since the Second World War, Australia has had to adapt to survive in changing global and domestic economies, a volatile political landscape, and face the challenges of an unpredictable climate.

Episode two MAKING A NATION, explores the post-war work revolution in which Australia was transformed from an agricultural economy into a manufacturing one. Full employment guaranteed unprecedented prosperity for most Australians and a high standard of living.

Episode three, GROUNDBREAKERS, is about mining. From the 1949 coal miners’ strike which almost undid the economy (and certainly undermined the Labor government) to the ‘Axe the Tax’ demonstrations sixty-five years later, this episode is about the political power of miners and the mining industry since the Second World War.

The final episode, AT YOUR SERVICE, is about two things: women and the services industry. Today, women are dominant in the Australian workplace because they are equipped intellectually to take advantage of an economy which is more about brains than brawn.

Production credit: A Wildbear Entertainment production. Financed with the assistance of National Museum of Australia, ANU Australian Studies Institute, National Archives of Australia. Financed with support from the ACT Government and Screen Canberra. Series Producer Mike Bluett. Executive Producers: Alan Erson, Dr Holly Trueman, Serge Ou. The lecture will be shown on ABC News this Friday (27 October) at 9.05pm AEDT and repeated on ABC TV this Saturday (28 October) at 5pm.

One of Australia’s most respected journalists, Leigh Sales, delivers the Andrew Olle Media Lecture, covering the themes of news avoidance, loss of trust in the media, and why, like many people, she is being affected by both.

Does anyone know when the ABC 2024 upfronts are?
