I did find one to cap but they were rare.

Yeah. I wonder if they might have had some technical issues that night.

Jeremy Fernandez was promoted as having a big role in the show alongside Courtney Act and Casey Donovan. Saw lots of Courtney and Casey interviews with parade participants.

We did see some pre-recorded stuff with Jeremy but from memory, I think he was in only two live crosses and he didn’t interview anyone. He was just talking about himself, his outfit and his excitement about being there. :man_shrugging: The first cross also cut out unexpectedly and they did mention technical problems.

So overall, not a lot of advantage to switching public broadcasters.

Yeah. If I was being critical, I’d say you didn’t really need three hosts at the desk.

Hamish Macdonald and Mon Schafter are good presenters but maybe having the two of them so similar was too much. I felt like Steven Oliver wasn’t really up to the presenting job. He’s funny in stand up and sketch comedy but he wasn’t really delivering enough laughs.

Courtney and Casey were great. Courtney is a professional now and can’t fault her. Casey probably needed to conduct some of those interviews with participants to the side of the parade, so she wasn’t holding up the parade. Jeremy should have been used to speak to some audience members or performers.

I still think someone needs to give Courtney Act her own TV show. A variety show with a mix of interviews, performances and comedy could work well.

Except exposure to a much larger and more diverse audience, cross platform content for the first time (local radio segments/previews, online, listen app, JJJ) and an iview offering to an audience/use base much much larger than SBS on demand.

People’s Republic of Mallacoota

From Tuesday 5 April 8.00pm

In a remote part of Victoria, a deeply divided bushfire- ravaged community realises it can’t rely on outsiders to make things better. Harnessing its spirit of self-reliance, the town unites to take charge of its own recovery.

Can the traumatised survivors of a bushfire-ravaged coastal community seize control of their own destiny, overcome their differences, and save their town from dying? People’s Republic of Mallacoota, a 6 x 30minute character-led observational documentary series, chronicles what happens when the citizens of a divided, disenfranchised and bushfire-ravaged Australian community roll up their sleeves, take charge of their own future, and seek to rebuild their town.

Armageddon arrived in Mallacoota on New Year’s Eve 2019. The iconic images of its residents and tourists huddled on the foreshore as a 200km-long fire front bore down upon them made the remote Victorian coastal community the international face of environmental catastrophe. As the Royal Australian Navy evacuated thousands of people trapped on Mallacoota’s beaches, the whole world witnessed Australia’s first climate-change refugees.

Weeks later, those traumatised evacuees returned to a community devastated by bushfire only to be hit by the double whammy of Covid-19. With Mallacoota’s economy in ruins, its environment scorched, and many of its residents homeless.

People’s Republic of Mallacoota tells the story of a regional community with a strong streak of self-reliance and deep distrust of outsiders, that kickstarts a grassroots revolution to save their town.

People’s Republic of Mallacoota follows an ensemble cast of resolute, charismatic, and forthright regional Australians as they fight to rebuild their lives, rehabilitate their environment, and re- invent their community. And they’re in a race against a time to make sure the horrors of the last bushfire season never happen again.

Grand Designs - Season 19

From Sunday 17 April 7.40pm

Joe and Claire hope to create ‘one of the greatest homes on the planet’, that looks like a huge piece of art, with 34 enormous, angled zinc shards. But the expensive build faces mind-boggling problems.

This new series of Grand Designs features wildly different cutting-edge homes and dramatic personal stories.

All throughout Kevin McCloud is on hand to guide us through the trials and tribulations of creating extraordinary, highly personal places to live no matter the odds.

Few of us would think of building their home to look like a work of art, but on a hill overlooking a beautiful valley in South Devon Joe and Claire are going to do just that. Their new house will be a giant sculpture inspired by the local landscape, 70 metres long and featuring 34 enormous, angled zinc shards jutting out in all directions. It will be complicated and expensive to build, but Joe is young, wealthy and ambitious, as well as fearless. He intends to invest a large part of his self-made fortune into making the impossible possible. His aim is to build "one of the greatest homes on the planet”.

But with huge ambition can come huge risk, and right from the start the problems are mind boggling. Major structural engineering changes are necessary to contend with high winds hitting the shards, and the £835,000 budget virtually doubles before the first walls go up. A team of local builders then struggle through all weathers to build a vast intricate wooden frame, but the prefabricated timbers simply won’t fit together. As delays mount, what should have been a masterpiece is in real danger of becoming a white elephant.

Attenborough and the Mammoth Graveyard

Monday 18 April 8.30pm

Sir David Attenborough joins Ben Garrod and a team of investigators at a mammoth graveyard, near Swindon, to explore whether Neanderthals might have killed the Ice Age beasts.

Four years ago, a couple walking round a freshly dug gravel pit just outside Swindon noticed something unusual protruding from the mud. It was the top of a huge fossilised Mammoth leg bone. Sally and Neville Hollingworth, both keen amateur fossil hunters, had stumbled across the discovery of a lifetime - a mammoth graveyard in the prehistoric riverbed of the Thames.

They returned to dig up more bones and tusks and a stone ‘hand axe’ made by an early human. Unlike most mammoth discoveries that date back tens of thousands of years, Sally and Neville’s finds appear to be hundreds of thousands of years old - offering an extremely rare glimpse of life deep in the Ice Ages.

When Sir David Attenborough heard about their remarkable finds he was keen to see them for himself. They join biologist Prof. Ben Garrod and a team of archaeologists and palaeontologists as they carefully excavate the quarry. The site raises many questions: Why were the mammoths here? How did they die? Could the ancient humans have killed them? Or was there some kind of catastrophic event?Sir David and Ben meet with leading experts in the fields of evolution, both human and mammoth to grasp a greater understanding of our relationship with this iconic ice-age giant.

Laboratory dating of soil samples suggests the site dates to around 215,000 years ago. As the team finds more tools and bones, they realise this could be a once-in-a-generation discovery, offering a unique window into prehistoric Britain.

Life

image

From Sunday 24 April 9.30pm

An explosive series exploring the human capacity for connection in a splintered society. When the lives of the residents of a large house intersect, hidden secrets connect them in ways they couldn’t have anticipated.

Life is an explosive new six-part drama series from the team behind BAFTA-winning global hit Doctor Foster. Created by multi-award-winning writer Mike Bartlett, Life explores the human capacity for connection in an increasingly splintered society.

In Manchester, England, the residents of a large suburban house go about their very different lives. The walls that divide their flats keep them apart. But life has a way of bringing people together.

David (Adrian Lester), a happily married university lecturer, is torn by temptation when he meets an impulsive younger woman. As Gail (Alison Steadman) approaches her 70th birthday, a chance encounter makes her question the choices she’s built her whole life around. Secret alcoholic Belle (Victoria Stone) is managing to maintain a fragile happiness, until her wilful 15-year-old niece crashes into her neatly ordered existence. And heavily pregnant Hannah (Melissa Johns), who has two men in her life, must choose between desire and dependability.

Like all ordinary lives, theirs are filled with the extraordinary. And as their stories begin to intersect, hidden secrets connect these characters in ways that could never have been anticipated.

Griff’s Canadian Adventure

From Saturday 30 April 6.00pm

British Comedian and travel enthusiast Griff Rhys Jones embarks on a journey across the second largest Country on the planet: Canada. From mountain ranges and vast prairies to glittering cities and ice-locked towns, Griff will travel some 4000 miles, nearly 7000km, from Newfoundland and Labrador on the rugged Atlantic Coast in the East, all the way across the country, to Vancouver Island in the Pacific NorthWest.

As he travels Griff will uncover what makes each province so tantalisingly unique yet distinctly Canadian; from the Frenchness of cosmopolitan Quebec City and Montreal in Quebec to the isolation and coldness of the frozen North in Manitoba and the richness of the endless prairies across Alberta and Saskatchewan. He’ll reveal how the history of each province has impacted its past, present and future, and helped shape the Canada of today.

Throughout his journey he’ll be given a challenge to learn to appreciate each province like a local. Will he leave Ontario with a genuine Canadian souvenir? Can he uncover what it means to be good in the kitchen in Newfoundland and Labrador? Will he refresh his mind, body and spirit while in British Columbia? Each challenge will offer him the opportunity to live like a local and uncover aspects of life particular to each province, with a little help from the local characters and experts he meets along the way.

Episode One - Newfoundland: Bigness
In this first episode, Griff explores Newfoundland and Labrador in the East and uncovers what makes Canada distinctly unique and decidedly ‘big’.
