How To Live Younger

From Tuesday 21 September 9.30pm

How To Live Younger is a scientific guide to beating disease. The scientists in this series show we have more control over our health than we ever imagined. They’ve discovered it’s easier than we thought to extend life, dodge disease and ignite the one thing we desire the most… happiness.

Hosted by author and ABC Radio’s Jacinta Parsons, the series cuts through the ‘wellness’ hype, revealing rigorous and robust scientific research that shows how we can prolong our time here on earth.

In the past, if we were lucky, we’d live till 80 but the idea that we’d spend the last 15 years slowly deteriorating seemed an unavoidable (and depressing) fate. Now scientists believe that we can increase our “healthspan” and live more active, healthy and enjoyable years on this planet. Remarkably, they’ve found that many of the ‘diseases of ageing’, like heart disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and depression, could be preventable.

In labs around the world, scientists are trialling, testing and analysing a range of weapons that could help us stay healthier for longer. They have made incredible progress, weaponising microbes to fight depression, repurposing anxiety medications to stop cancer, as well as using “fast” diets, mindfulness, exercise, urban design and even using ‘random acts of kindness’ to ward off disease.

In the first episode, Jacinta takes a deep dive into exercise, exploring how the simple act of moving can improve the health of our bodies and our brains. Scientists at top institutions around the world reveal how exercise can rewind the clock on cognitive decline, fight cancer, prevent disease, beat depression and even enhance our lives by making us smarter, more creative human beings.

Des

From Friday 24 September 8.30pm

Des is a chilling true-crime drama focusing on one of the most infamous serial killers in UK history – DENNIS NILSEN. Known as the ‘kindly killer’, Nilsen (played by David Tennant) was a local civil servant who spent five years murdering boys and young men he met on the streets of Soho from 1978 to 1983.

He would meet and befriend these men before offering them food or lodgings for the evening back at his North London flat. His victims were often homeless or living off grid, having slipped through the cracks of 1980s society and were therefore welcoming of this stranger’s apparent generosity. When he was finally caught on 9 February 1983, Nilsen had murdered a total of fifteen men over a period of five years, making him Britain’s most prolific serial killer of the time.

After his arrest, Nilsen was astonishing in his honesty: admitting outright to all fifteen murders in the police car outside his flat. But infuriatingly for the investigating detectives, he couldn’t remember any of his victims’ names. With no apparent motive, inconclusive forensic evidence and most of Nilsen’s victims living off-grid, the police started the biggest manhunt investigation in UK history. This time not for the murderer, but for the murdered.

The story is told through the prism of three isolated men - a detective, a biographer, and Nilsen himself. While DETECTIVE PETER JAY and the police investigation’s attempt to get justice for as many victims as possible provides the narrative and emotional spine, the relationship between NILSEN and his biographer BRIAN MASTERS allows us to delve into the mind of one of the most emotionally elusive serial killers the world has ever seen. Can we ever really understand the mind of a psychopathic killer? And, if we try, what price do we pay?

Capital

From: Friday 24 September 9.20pm

From the makers of Humans and Broadchurch, and based on John Lanchester’s best-selling book, Capital is a portrait of a fictional road transformed by soaring property prices: what was once the home of modest lowermiddle class families, Pepys Road has been continuously gentrified into a street of multi-million pound houses.

One day, the street’s residents all receive an anonymous postcard through their front doors bearing a simple message: “We Want What You Have”. Who is behind the anonymous hate campaign? And what do they want?

As the mystery of the postcards deepens, interweaving stories reveal lives filled with love and loss, fear and greed, fortune and envy and, at its heart, family and home.

Production credits: A Kudos production for BBC.

It will be FTA premiere, it debuted on Stan in September 2020.

9/11: Life Under Attack

image

Thursday 9 September at 9:30 pm

9/11 was the first major news event in the age of digital cameras and voicemails. This remarkable film tells the never-before-told stories of that day, created through a tapestry of previously unseen video and unheard audio. Without interview or commentary, this is a portrait of an unfolding tragedy told through those who witnessed it first-hand, in fear for their lives but compelled to chronicle the collapse of everyday life surrounding them.

A Life In Ten Pictures: Amy Winehouse

image

Thursday 16 September 9.30pm

Amy Winehouse’s image is known around the world; she was the North London girl with a unique voice and look, who became hugely successful seemingly overnight and whose private life the press became obsessed by. She died in 2011 aged just 27. A Life in Ten Pictures throws a unique lens onto Amy’s extraordinary life by focusing on ten defining photographs, from iconic shots to private snaps, the stories behind them revealed by those who were there and those who knew her story best, including her parents and close friends.

Across the ten photographs the film reveals Amy as a person who, in the words of her mother Janis, never got a chance to grow up out of the limelight.

Despite her huge talent and outward confidence Amy struggled with self-doubt. Her mother says: “Amy never had the confidence in herself, she really didn’t, basically she didn’t get it, that she could do it, didn’t realise what a good singer she was.”

Amy’s story begins with a simple image - a photo of her as a young child in a paddling pool in the Winehouses’ back garden in Southgate, London, in 1985. Her dad Mitch describes her as inquisitive and adventurous- “I knew she’d be trouble, but not in a bad way, I just knew that whatever she was going to do, it wasn’t going to be plain sailing.” Amy didn’t really take to mainstream education and her beloved Nan, Cynthia, encouraged her to go to stage school instead.Janis, Amy’s mum, reveals how Amy would sing constantly as a child and teenager- “Amy had to sing, almost like breathing”.

Grantchester - Season 6

image

Saturday, 2 October at 7.30pm

It’s 1958 and trouble is brewing in the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester. Reverend Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) relishes his role as a firebrand vicar, willing to rock the boat and challenge conventions to help people. But the very role he loves put him at odds with his own ideals when his kind-hearted curate, Leonard Finch (Al Weaver) is caught up in a scandal. Will’s best friend, Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green), finds his principles shaken, housekeeper Mrs Chapman (Tessa Peake-Jones) is distraught, and Geordie’s wife Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) is defiant. Will and Geordie’s friendship is also tested when an old army buddy comes back into Geordie’s life. Johnny (Shaun Dooley) is a lawyer, representing the very people Geordie puts away. But the bond forged between them in a prison camp in Burma means Geordie is drawn to this morally grey character, particularly when Will’s idealism starts looking like naivety, from a certain point of view.

Despite their differences of opinion, Geordie and Will tackle a variety of cases together, from a murder during a summer break at a holiday camp, to contested adoptions, the deadly cut and thrust of a parish election, American soldiers racing cars, audacious robberies, student CND protests, and even a murdered music producer.

It seems morality and legality are at loggerheads at every turn. But when the question of what true justice really means comes uncomfortably close to home, it’s going to take all of Will’s skill and empathy to navigate these choppy waters and help the ones he loves.

The long run of The Durrells will finish on ABC. ABC’s Saturday numbers might improve.

The Durrels is bringing ratings down on ABC

Well, this is what happens when they have a third bite at the cherry. The show already screened on Seven and BBC First before the ABC.

ABC maybe should not be airing airing Channel 7 UK drama rejects because it will sabotage them of being successful.

Thres only so much product available to broadcast though. If Seven and BBC First pay big bucks for first run British programs, there’s not much left for the ABC. There is no other option.

Step Into Paradise

Tuesday 12 October 8.30pm

Step Into Paradise marks the beginning of the ABC Arts Know My Name partnership with the National Gallery of Australia. Know My Name addresses historical gender bias in the arts by presenting a celebration of women across diverse creative practices. Iconic fashion designers Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson are two such women, their pioneering style created a bold and unashamedly Australian fashion identity.

For the best part of 50 years, Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson have shared a passionate love affair with Australia. An affair that bound them in the most extraordinary and enduring friendship and a creative collaboration that defined a generation. No other creative pairing has had such a lasting impact on Australian fashion, our design identity and our sense of self.

Jenny and Linda embraced the vibrancy of a unique landscape and elevated icons of Australiana tourist kitsch, to the height of fashion and art. They observed this vast country with wit, irreverence and astonishing imagination to create a fashion story like no other. And then they gifted it to the world.

Step Into Paradise is an evocative ride of fame, triumph, tragedy, riches, losses, determination, racism, rebellion, sexuality and heartbreak. It is a story of remarkable highs and deep lows, of women and love. A story of Australia, who we were and who we are today. A gloriously rich visual collage of emotion, art and kaleidoscopic colour. A walk into the dreams of Jenny and Linda. A step into paradise.

As part of the Know My Name partnership, ABC Arts will deliver a vibrant slate of original content across all ABC platforms to celebrate the work of all female artists and to enhance understanding of their contribution to Australia’s cultural life.

Annika

From Friday 15 October 8.30pm

Annika follows the life of DI Annika Strandhed (Nicola Walker), who has returned to Glasgow to head up the Marine Homicide Unit, where she is tasked with solving the puzzling crimes and unexplained murders that wash up in Scotland’s waters. Annika allows viewers to be her confidante by speaking directly, sharing her wry observations on the case and her life, as she balances solving cases, managing a new team, and raising a brilliant yet complex teenage daughter.

Intuitive and instinctive, Annika has a weakness for using literary and historical references to help solve her crimes, an enthusiasm that her team definitely don’t share, but which is often the thing that unlocks the case.
The team’s cases take them from the depths of Glasgow’s Clyde River to the Isle of Bute and
picturesque Loch Katrine as they solve a new crime each episode, juxtaposing Scotland’s stunning landscapes and urban beauty against the horrific realities of the murders her team must solve.

In this first episode, Annika and her team are assigned their first case when a man’s body is dredged from the Clyde, a harpoon piercing through his head. Their investigation leads to the victim’s struggling boat business, and his unscrupulous dealings. Channelling Moby Dick’s obsessive search for the white whale, Annika feels there’s a poetic justice at the heart of this murder, much to her team’s bemusement. And when a second death is uncovered, the new team need to pull together to find the killer before any more lives are lost.

Meanwhile, Annika’s daughter Morgan (Silvie Furneaux) is struggling to adjust to the new life that goes along with her mother’s new job. Morgan makes her feelings clear at the school play, which causes a headache for Annika.
