ABC operations

Ugh. Greens and wisely do not go together. Tasmania is still cleaning up the mess from when the Greens had a bit of power and Nick McKim who was Greens leader then is now one of the Senators.

Because I do care. I listen to ABC Local Radio more than 2GB & if you were paying attention & reading what I wrote (alarm bell) you would realise I donā€™t watch Sky News. I also watch a mix of commercial TV & ABC TV, probably more ABC TV.
Again I have been incorrectly stereotyped or quoted. Thatā€™s the 3rd time now this is getting tiresome.
I care about the ABC because Iā€™m one of their viewers/listeners & for a whole host of reasons I canā€™t be bothered listing right now.

Iā€™ll have 2 corrections to Vidiotā€™s remarks to reply to later where I have been mis-quoted & further information to add later.

Question JBar: Do you favour a democratic system with free speech?

Iā€™d also like to add: that when watching news or listening to only one source of material one can get a very distorted view of the world. When one gets older one usually gets wiser.
Have a good nightā€¦

Iā€™m pretty sure JohnsonTV made the remark with tongue firmly planted in cheek.

No. You seem to be living up to your stereotype. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The ABC and the Federal Government are persisting with the sale of the former Elsternwick studios, saying the buildings had no heritage value.

Milne backed wasting taxpayers money on this:

Seems a rather self indulgent idea particularly given Kylie has never really had a prominent presence on ABC

$1 million podcast fund: ABC supports Australiaā€™s best and brightest audio storytellers

A landmark ABC initiative launched in 2017 for new and emerging podcasters has proven an outstanding success in supporting community-based creatives with remarkable Australian stories to tell.

The ABC is proud to announce that its $1 million podcast fund has strengthened Australiaā€™s audio industry by supporting compelling and distinctive podcasts such as The Pineapple Project , Fierce Girls , Positions Vacant , Alice Fraser Trilogy , Mindfully , Little Tiny , Out Of The Loop , Troll Play and new series No Feeling is Final .

Judith Whelan, ABC Head of Specialist content, said: ā€œThe ABCā€™s $1 million podcast fund has given an opportunity to many Australian podcasters and extended the diversity of content produced by the ABC. As the nationā€™s leading podcast producer, the ABC is committed to collaborating with our best and brightest podcasters and giving them the platform and audience to strengthen our growing audio industry.ā€

The $1 million fund was announced at OzPod 2017, Australiaā€™s premier podcast industry conference, and has since supported some of the ABCā€™s most popular podcasts. In October 2017, the ABC also opened the fund to anyone with original and entertaining podcast ideas that reflected contemporary Australian life.

The public call-out attracted 1273 submissions from across Australia. Among those selected for production under the $1 million fund were:

  • No Feeling is Final , a moving, engrossing and often darkly funny story about mental health and suicide for anyone whoā€™s ever wondered if life is worth living.
  • Animal Sound Safari , exploring the weird history humans have with animals.
  • Parental Guidance Recommended (releasing October 2018), which uncovers the secret parenting lives of Australians such as Tom Gleeson and Ita Buttrose.

Other new podcasts developed via the public call-out will be produced in coming months. The $1 million fund has also enabled the ABC to provide professional development training to more than 10 freelance audio producers across Australia.

Iā€™m shocked by your sensible comments.

ABC making up for lost time. It should have been looking into (and arguably transitioning several radio national and JJJ programs to a more podcast focused format) podcast related content 5+ years ago, itā€™s only in the last 12 months or so where theyā€™ve suddenly realised that podcasts are popular.

Statement from the ABC Board:

This Board has always acted in the best interests of the ABC, has fully debated any issues presented to it and ensured that editorial independence has been maintained. We are united in defending the independence of the Corporation. We have done our job thoughtfully and with due regard to board process.

To clarify various media reports, the Board received a letter from the former Managing Director late on Friday 21 September 2018. In that letter, Ms Guthrie responded to several issues that the Board raised with her. In addition, the former Managing Director raised other matters that she requested the Board investigate on a confidential basis.

The Board resolved on Sunday 23 September 2018 to appoint an external, independent expert advisor to investigate these matters. That investigation is underway, and it is not appropriate for the Board or the ABC to make any further comment pending its completion.

The Board is focused on supporting the Acting Managing Director David Anderson, his leadership team and all employees in fulfilling the ABCā€™s Charter remit and serving the communit

ABC Acting Chair Responds to Minister for Communications and the Arts

On 14 October, Dr Kirstin Ferguson, Acting Chair of the ABC, received a letter from the Minister for Communications and the Arts seeking assurance from the Board that it has upheld its duty to maintain the independence and integrity of the Corporation, and in relation to the independent ABC investigation into certain matters raised by the former Managing Director.

Dr Ferguson replied to the Minister on both matters today. Her response can be read here.

I am making it clear to stakeholders that the next triennial funding round, scheduled for resolution in next yearā€™s Budget, should be used as an opportunity to reposition the ABC for the future.

If the ABC is important now in bringing diversity to the media landscape, then it will be even more essential over coming years in providing quality, independent, local content to Australians. The ABC will be the innovator. We will provide the creative jobs that are necessary for this new era. We will continue to provide the highest quality independent journalism.

Correction and Apology to Mr Christopher Fox Camp Gallipoli Foundation

Tonightly with Tom Ballard : The ABC, through its show Tonightly with Tom Ballard , broadcast a story on 23 April 2018 concerning the Camp Gallipoli Foundation and its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Christopher Fox.

The ABC wishes to clarify that, although the objects of the Camp Gallipoli Foundation included ā€œto use the surplus from the Camp Gallipoli commemorative events to support RSL branches and Legacy Clubsā€, most of its other objects did not concern fundraising.

Whilst the Camp Gallipoli Foundation did not make a distribution of funds to the RSL and/or Legacy Clubs in the years 2015 and 2016, Mr Fox has told the ABC that the Camp Gallipoli Foundation did deliver on its other objectives, namely:
a) to ensure the preservation of the memory and honour of those who suffered and died in all theatres of war commencing from the Gallipoli landing in the First World War, through the Camp Gallipoli commemorative events;
b) to bring together communities from varying backgrounds, cultures, and locations to celebrate the ANZAC spirit;
c) to encourage families and school communities to come together to honour and ensure the ANZAC spirit lives on; and
d) to educate and reinforce the ANZAC spirit to our youth.

The ABC accepts that it did not have a proper basis to suggest that Mr Fox acted improperly in his role as CEO of the Camp Gallipoli Foundation and regrets and unreservedly withdraws the statement made by Mr Ballard that the Camp Gallipoli concept was a poorly conceived plan that ballooned into a costly and devastating failure thanks to the greed and hubris of those in command.

The ABC unreservedly apologises to Mr Fox for the embarrassment and distress caused to him by reason of the broadcast.

Vanessa Wiltshire awarded 2019 Donald McDonald Scholarship

Congratulations to Vanessa Wiltshire, who has been named as the recipient of the 2019 Donald McDonald Scholarship.

The ABC was delighted to welcome former ABC Chairman Donald McDonald back to the boardroom for the official announcement with acting Managing Director David Anderson.

Currently a Brisbane-based researcher with Australian Story , Vanessa has worked at the ABC for just over a decade as a journalist, producer and researcher, including being Content Director for ABC Brisbane for seven years and the editorial leader for programs including Speaking Out and Conversations .

The Donald McDonald Scholarship provides an experienced journalist or program-maker with an opportunity to produce a research project focused on the study of journalism.

The recipient participates in a three-month fellowship program at the Reuters Institute at Green Templeton College in Oxford University.

Vanessaā€™s research project is titled ā€œSaving local ā€“ an examination of collaborative local journalismā€ ā€“ an area of vital interest to the ABC and to all Australian media and audiences.

Vanessa joins a distinguished roll-call of former recipients, including Liz Jackson, Mark Corcoran, Greg Wilesmith, Margot Oā€™Neill, Eleanor Hall and Peter McEvoy.

Misleading report in Fairfax Media

Todayā€™s Fairfax Media report by Michael Koziol (ā€œABC reporter suspended for two months after complaint by Alex Turnbull to chairmanā€) is misleading and seems to have been deliberately written to create a false impression that editorial interference has occurred in ABC News management.

The report contends that ā€œan ABC journalist has been suspended and is the subject of a two-month investigation following a direct complaint by Malcolm Turnbullā€™s son to former chairman Justin Milneā€ over unaired audio from an August interview being given to The Australian Financial Review without authority.

As Fairfax was told yesterday: ABC News management was at no time contacted by the former Chairman on this issue, nor was aware he had any interest in the matter. The former ABC Managing Director also did not raise this as an issue. The ABC has received no editorial complaints relating to the interview or the subsequent reporting on it from Mr Turnbull, any politician or any member of the public.

News management became aware of the matter by reading the initial story in the AFR and began looking into it immediately. The investigation was begun independently by News management and not at the behest of Mr Milne, Mr Turnbull, or anyone else.

Inquiries are continuing and will take as much time as is required to do a thorough investigation into this serious and unacceptable incident.

Statement regarding 2019 Annual Public Meeting

The ABC Annual Public Meeting scheduled for February 2019 has been postponed.

The Board believes that decisions around the timing and purpose of future Annual Public Meetings should involve the new ABC Chair. The Federal Government is responsible for the appointment of the ABC Chair and this process is currently underway.
