According to The Australian, Tony Jones is close to signing a surprise new deal with the ABC. He says the deal will not only see him filing stories for Foreign Correspondent, but also report on every country in the Asia-Pacific region (except China) for ABC TV and radio news and current affairs. Jones will soon be based in Beijing with wife Sarah Ferguson as the ABC’s new China bureau chief.

ABC reporters John Taylor and Donna Field have been holidaying onboard Ovation of the Seas when some of its passengers were caught in the New Zealand volcanic eruption yesterday. Field filed a report for the 7pm bulletin last night and wrote one for the ABC website, while Taylor filed a short report for this morning’s radio news. This is Field’s report.

The ABC has sent Norman Hermant and Josh Bavas to New Zealand to cover the tragedy.

Welcome to the 2020 ABC News Cadets

The ABC is delighted to welcome our successful candidates for the 2020 ABC News cadetships, as well as the recipient of the annual Caroline Jones Scholarship, who also completes a 12-month cadetship.

The News cadets are: Alison Xiao (Sydney), Evelyn Manfield (Perth), Jessica Rendall (Brisbane), Holly Tregenza (Canberra), Kate Ainsworth (Hobart), Mahalia Carter (Adelaide), Leanne Wong (Melbourne) and Nicholas Hynes (Darwin).

The recipient of the Caroline Jones Scholarship is Madeline Austin, from Wellington NSW. Her cadetship program will comprise a placement in the Dubbo newsroom for four months followed by eight months in the Canberra newsroom.

The annual Caroline Jones Scholarship provides financial and on-the-job development for a talented Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person who aspires to be a journalist, assisting them to build a career in the art of multiplatform storytelling.

“Congratulations to Madeline Austin,” Caroline said. “She has shown the courage to overcome the limitations for young people living in country Australia by succeeding in her tertiary studies. Now this Scholarship will provide her with the guidance and support to develop her skills as a journalist.”

All the cadets will start with ABC News in January.
