Those Graphics are beautiful! To think about the possible theme change again, I’ve grown to like the current theme since watching ABC News more frequently and think the current theme will do for now, but what ever ABC does for its News service, let’s hope it doesn’t bring an uproar as @SydneyCityTV mentioned. Things have to evolve eventually.

I agree. The current branding of ABC News has aged quite well after six years, however I certainly will look forward to any changes that may arise!

Gloria Kalache presenting in Victoria this weekend.

I’d like to see a modernised update of the Majestic Fanfare used on all platforms, if they must change it.

The ABC TV news theme has been changed every ten years or so for the past thirty years, and while the current TV theme is very good, you can’t really dump the radio theme after 60 years of use, can you?

They modernised the existing TV theme a few years ago and turned it from being quite old fashioned into something really modern. Can’t see why they couldn’t do that with the Majestic Fanfare.

Majestic Fanfare sounds so dated. I’ve never heard anything like it in the last 20 years or so. Even old fashioned Aunty BBC updated its themes. There’s not much you could do with majestic Fanfare to make it a relevant theme in this day and age. It was only ever written to be “production music”.

And interestingly, in Melbourne at least, it wasn’t used as the opening theme for the news on local radio in the 70s. 3LO used a contemporary theme. No one complained. I was only when the Sydney Broadcasting Corp decided to make all stations play Majestic Fanfare that it returned.

And as others have said, how about something contemporary composed by an Australian? ABC is trying to shake off its ancient audience only appeal. Dumping Majestic Fanfare would be a good start.

yeah I gotta say, stick with the current theme re-done or maybe remix the previous one but majestic fanfare - really?

No, but you don’t have to dump a recognisable TV theme either.

Now that I think about it, why do we need one theme across radio and TV/online? People know what services they’re listening/watching to. They know that ABC Local Radio with one theme is provided by the same broadcaster as the ABC’s other services. Is it such a bad thing to have two themes - one for radio and one for visual news (TV, online, mobile)? They don’t use MJ on ABC News Radio either.

Majestic Fanfare works on radio because of the format it’s found in, which is basically a very straightforward 2 minutes of the news at the top of the hour. It is an older theme in comparison but it still works fine and is hugely recognisable. However I have doubts that one could remix that theme to be suitable for TV and online.

Interesting to note that, as the ABC is an official radio broadcaster of the Rio Olympics, its reporters can interview competitors inside venues and athletes village, however the audio clips are not included in reports on 7pm TV news or any bulletins on ABC News 24. Or is the ABC banned from doing so due to TV rights restrictions?
