Walkabout Wickets

image

Tuesday, 10 November at 8.30pm

The Australian summer has long been synonymous with the sport of cricket. We grew up knowing the legendary stories of Bradman, Border, Waugh and Warne - but next to those are some other stories not so well known.
In 1868, a group of all Aboriginal cricketers made a three-month journey from Australia to the UK by sea. They arrived in the UK to play 47 matches at some of the most famous grounds in world cricket.

Walkabout Wickets follows the 2018 National Indigenous Cricket Team on their tour of the UK, delving into the deep connection these young Australians have to the game, and the group of Aboriginal cricketers who blazed a trail 150 years earlier.

Production credits: Director: Ben Carpenter-Nwanyanwu. Writers: Joel Buncle and Ben Carpenter-Nwanyanwu. Producer: Joel Buncle. Executive Producer: Cricket Australia.

The Sound - Season 2

image

From **Sunday 1 November at 6pm **

image

After garnering widespread praise from critics, musicians and the public alike, ABC and the Mushroom Group are thrilled to confirm The Sound will return to ABC screens with season two, on Sunday 1 November at 6pm on ABC + iview – and just in time for Ausmusic Month!

It’s been seven months since COVID crippled Australia’s live music industry, leaving artists, venues, crew, and music lovers without a vital part of our country’s culture and economy. Born out of this crisis, The Sound’s purpose is clear: to showcase Australian music. With unique, multi-platform content, season two will continue to highlight the vast array of local talent within our industry, with artists given the opportunity to perform for prime-time audiences on our national broadcaster.

In a word, season one was epic: 85 artists filmed at 58 locations nationwide. It was packed full of ARIA winners, chart toppers, the hottest new talent and moving performances by incredible First Nations talent. Season two will be even bigger. You don’t want to miss an episode!

Returning for season two is host Jane Gazzo (ex-triple j, Recovery) who’ll also be joined on our screens by Bridget Hustwaite (triple j Good Nights) along with a guest co-host each episode. Expect the return of segments ‘From The Vault’ (unseen historical footage) and ‘Tribute’ (incredible collaborations on legendary tracks)… plus a few new surprises.

Says host Jane Gazzo: “ I am delighted to be part of The Sound season two. Australian music is not just being celebrated on the ABC with The Sound , but also documented and highlighted during what has been possibly the most unusual year ever for the arts and music industry. The positive feedback from season one validated just how much Aussie audiences love their music television… I look forward to seeing the massive talent and contributions from so many of our established and emerging artists. Bring it on!”

Wayne

image

Tuesday 24 November at 8:30pm

WAYNE is the near improbable true story of 1987 World Motorcycle Champion Wayne Gardner’s triumphant journey from riding a $5 dirt bike to the summit of his global sport. At its heart WAYNE is also a love story, with girlfriend, Donna-Lee Kahlbetzer, never far from the action.

Hailing from the working-class town of Wollongong in Australia, Wayne quickly excels in local motorcycle racing. After dropping out of high school and being fired from his tube making apprenticeship, Wayne must rely on his dogged determination to fulfill his dream. Wayne’s bare-knuckle riding style catches the attention of a Japanese team boss and engineer of almost mythical status, Mamoru Moriwaki. Never one to let an opportunity slide, Wayne accepts Moriwaki’s invitation to race in England and beyond.

Against all odds, Wayne wins his first race and permanently stamps his name on international motorcycle racing. But the fish-out-of-water Australian desperately misses his girlfriend Donna, who is the cornerstone to his success. With 17-year-old Donna at his side, young Wayne climbs the ranks of Grand Prix motorcycle racing quickly. But along with the fame and fortune comes tragedy and trauma and in the sophisticated world of Grand Prix, Wayne clashes with riders who are more calculated and refined than the larrikin kid from Wollongong.

He fulfils his lifelong dream of becoming 500cc World Champion in 1987, however, his good fortune does not last long. Honda redesigns his championship winning bike and Wayne quickly learns it is rife with mechanical problems. Things go from bad to worse when Honda signs Wayne’s arch nemesis, Yamaha rider Eddie Lawson, behind his back. Wayne is devastated by what he perceives as Honda’s betrayal and arrives at the inaugural Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island exhausted from a frenzy of media appearances. The odds are stacked against him, but that’s when Wayne performs his best. With a roaring crowd of one hundred thousand urging him on, Wayne triumphantly wins the race and hearts of all Australians that day.

Success often means pushing oneself and those around you to the absolute limit. The attributes that allowed Wayne to be a world champion ultimately take their toll on his relationship with Donna, and yet the two remain close friends. Now, as determined as ever, Wayne supports his sons, Remy and Luca, as they begin their own international motorcycle racing careers.

Is the Brock program the same as this: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/brock-over-the-top-2020-dvd ?

Essentially es, though the run time on ABC is 54 minute compared to the DVD stated length of 104.

That’s why I was confused. That’s a lot of cutting.

Wild Australia: After the Fires

image

Tuesday 1 December at 8:30pm

Australia’s fauna has a long, impressive history of surviving on the driest inhabited continent on Earth. Fire is a force that has shaped the nature of Australia. However, as the last bushfire season has made brutally clear, climate change is shifting everything. After the worst bushfires in recorded history, the toll on the Australia’s unique wildlife has been nothing short of calamitous.

Three billion animals were killed or displaced as 12 million hectares, an area the size of England, went up in flames. The Forever Fires of Australia’s Black Summer are now recognised as the worst wildlife disaster in modern history. But the tragedy has also set the nation on the path to put meaningful protections in place to conserve its rare and irreplaceable creatures. Following hard working carers, dedicated scientists, and passionate volunteers,

After the Fires, narrated by actor and ambassador for Australian animal rights organisation, Voiceless, Hugo Weaving, charts the ecological recovery of Australia, through stories of hope, human intervention and resilience. In the year that follows the fires, life slowly returns to the scorched bushlands of Australia. The film provides an urgent message to safeguard our environment and bring about the necessary intervention required to maintain biodiversity on our hotter, fierier planet, before it is too late.

Friday 4 December 8.30pm and Sunday 6 December, 8.40pm

ABC and Screen Australia announce that, broadcasting live over two big nights from the Great Barrier Reef, Australian audiences will be able to watch one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles unfold – the once-yearly phenomenon of the majestic mass coral spawn.

REEF LIVE airing Friday 4 December, 8.30pm and Sunday 6 December, 8.40pm on ABC & iview will let you experience the anticipation and the wonder of this unique and very special natural event. As corals across the outer reef synchronise their spawn release, scientists will capture the spawn in a race against time to help regenerate the reef before it’s too late. As well as the coral spawning, we’ll watch the reef come alive in the breeding bonanza of fish, birds, and turtles.

Joining our hosts Hamish Macdonald ( Q+A, The Project ), Brooke Satchwell ( SeaChange ) and Dr Jordan Nguyen (scientist and inventor), in studio at the ‘REEF LIVE HQ’, will be an array of world experts looking at ways to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the reef for the future. They will discuss Indigenous perspectives, conservation initiatives and how we can all get involved in citizen science projects.

We’ll also have experts filming above and below the water with Marine biologist Dr Dean Miller, free diver and marine scientist Lucas Handley, and shark advocate Madison Stewart reporting from remote areas of the reef. Back at shore, Dr Ann Jones host of RN’s natural history program Off Track , will broadcast from the world famous hi-tech Seasimulator in Townsville. She’ll be there to watch millions of coral larvae being ‘born’ in captivity, mirroring the events taking place at sea.

Jennifer Collins, ABC Head of Factual & Culture said, “ REEF LIVE is a first for Australian viewers, an event for the whole family to share in the magical natural wonder of our Great Barrier Reef.”

“What better way to celebrate the end of the year than with the biggest regenerative event on the planet! Broadcasting live from the Great Barrier Reef as it’s spawning is a massive logistical challenge with high-stakes, but the anticipation is building and we’re hoping it’s a bumper year and we’ll be there in the thick of it” said Karina Holden, Head of Factual, Northern Pictures.

Screen Australia’s Head of Documentary Bernadine Lim said, “We are proud to support this highly innovative project celebrating the wonder of the reef, from the team at Northern Pictures who have a solid track record of creating engaging natural history stories. It’s set to be a must-watch event.”

Screen Queensland’s Chief Creative Officer Jo Dillon said, “ REEF LIVE will transport Australian audiences to Queensland in an unmissable screen event that captures rarely seen footage of one of our state’s most iconic natural treasures and tourist attractions.

“The production is truly an example of the power and importance of factual screen stories to ignite passion and curiosity in our precious, natural habitats.”

REEF LIVE is part of the ABC Your Planet initiative, which builds on the ABC’s coverage of climate and environmental issues by enabling audiences to counter challenges such as climate change and the increasing toll of extreme weather events, such as bushfires and floods, in their daily lives.
