ABC Local Radio

Ah news.com.au strikes again. Such a bastion of accurate “news”. Someone needs to look at a map. Idiots.

And Pickering, non-journalist and unfunny comedian extraordinare, will commence tomorrow afternoon. I really don’t know if I’ll be able to stomach 3LO drive any more…

ABC Melbourne is launching a new Meals for Melbourne campaign in association with Foodbank tomorrow (Monday).

Jon Faine, Lindy Burns and Terry Laidler all non-jounalists to successfully present current affairs style programmes on ABC Melbourne)3LO in the not too distant past. Being a journalist isn’t a prerequisite for hosting these slots.

This is very true, but none of them presented themselves first and foremost as “comedian”. That’s the part that I feel renders Charlie Pickering unsuitable. But we’ll see.

Truth is that I don’t like him much, but perhaps I’ll be pleasantly surprised?

Feel like Charlie has long since pivoted from that persona though.

yeah he stopped being funny years ago

The Chaser boys have done a pretty good job on 2BL and RN

Listened to Charlie’s show today, the first hour or so at least. I thought he did pretty good?

Timing into 5pm news wasn’t great and had a few issues with getting a caller on air after 5 but otherwise I thought he did alright .

Okay, this is a bit hard to describe, but I wanted to see if anyone else has noticed a change with ABC Radio News over maybe the past year?

The radio newsreader will announce a story by someone, for example, “The Trump administration is still deciding whether to negotiate further with Iran over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. John Lyons reports from Washington”.

But instead of a prepared news report from said journalist, it’s tone is casual and conversational, more like a sound grab from a chat on News Breakfast. Sure, it’s describing something that happened, but it’s not a news report. Not in the sense that I understand it to be.

I find it disconcerting. It breaks the serious flow of the news.

But I don’t know why it’s happening? Why isn’t the person filing a proper report for radio news? Is this just an ABC thing?

Am I the only one noting this? I’m listening on 3LO but I’m sure it’s right across the ABC networks.

Is it repurposed social content?

It seems a quick way to get a story to air, take a grab from from a cross on the news channel and package it up for radio rather than have the reporter do a separate radio report later on (if at all).

That’s exactly what they’re doing, sounds terrible.

Yes lots of regional news papers did the same, huge headline, little content. But if you can’t beat them join them. (Murdoch won btw)

Good to see Charlie Pickering giving interviews to Avi Yemeni of all people. Might be the shortest lived 3LO drive show in history if ABC had any sense about them.
