Well that was sudden, especially given he played a big role on the TV election coverage last weekend.

Saskia Mabin will be hosting Drive next week.

Bern Young will take over the Gold Coast Drive show from Monday.

On Friday, it emerged he will soon exit the talkback station. The West Australian understands he will instead host a show on the ABC, which is set to shake up its line up next year too.

Looks like more changes will be coming for the ABC in Perth.

So it should be. Having the two breakfast co-hosts on the ground in Paris definitely helped.

Sammy J will be leaving ABC Radio Melbourne’s Breakfast program at the end of the year. His last show will be on Friday December 13. An announcement about his replacement, along with the full 2025 ABC Radio Melbourne line-up will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Sammy J stated this morning that his replacement will be announced next week.

EDIT: The Herald Sun is reporting Bob Murphy and Sharnelle Vella will replace Sammy J.

That is an interesting combination. If the pairing is confirmed, I think the ABC is looking to utilise Sharnelle’s news background and Bob’s sporting background to liven up the breakfast show to compete against Ross and Russ on 3AW.

Has Sharnelle done any radio shows before?

She was often in on some of 3AW’s programs as a guest, IIRC Dee Dee (when she did Afternoons), maybe The Weekend Break with Grubby and I think Drive with Jacqui Felgate.

edit

Sharnelle is an interesting get, good for her too. She gained quite the profile during COVID and was highly praised for her coverage at the state politics level when then-Premier Daniel Andrews was quickly becoming polarising, her social media in particular gained a lot of traction and she used to do popular daily posts.

I agree, with her journalism especially state politics (and award winning) as well as being rather known now and generally popular, plus she seems to have a good natural funny side and banter. Combined with Bob Murphy’s more ‘everyday guy’, entertainment and footy/sports side. It could make a decent pairing. No doubt she was offered significantly more than her current salary too, given the extreme hours and dramatic career shift (I’m sure she would’ve been comfortable with her HSV position and could’ve been looking at a future presenting gig as one of their senior on air staff - didn’t a recent article suggest rivals such as Nine were looking at poaching the likes of her and Cassie Zervos?)

She’s also been a guest on Sammy J’s program as well.

ABC Sunshine Coast morning program has long been a poorly designed show.

They’re addicted to erasing history and rather than dual names, go only for pre European settlement names.

I don’t agree with the mentions at all at 8:30am.

If they must (and they don’t need to), do it at 5am to start the day, along with national anthem (many abc senior policy leaders hate it) and the welcome to ‘country’ which is nowhere near close to consensus support amongst the indigenous population.

Their former newsreader Bruce seems to have taken a redundancy and been snapped up by ARN. I wasn’t paying attention one morning, he began a bulletin on Hot 91 with a line of “on xyz country”, I did a double take and then discovered I hadn’t dial hopped to 90.3 but this clutter now extends to ARN’s Sunshine & Cooloola Coast stations Hot 91 & Zinc 96.

What mercy for the Melbourne audience. Most will be relieved and those who’ve drifted elsewhere may consider it acceptable to switch back if the replacement is of a decent calibre.

Interested to see how this goes actually. Sharnelle is a news hound so will give the show a punchier edge, and obviously Bob’s footy background will be able to lean into that. Providing they get the lighter stuff right between them, it could actually work out well.
