ABC Local Radio

I did wonder whether she was a bit miffed about losing the breakfast shift. I have really enjoyed Kim Napier though on that shift.

I’ve just always seen it as Tasmania still the one network with no real differences between north and south, we get a local breakfast and drive and really that’s probably enough. Means we don’t really feel like we are missing out on anything and Hobart and Launceston aren’t really that different, one is just bigger but they’re both regional and very different from other metro locations. All of the shows do have the statewide feel which is good.

Yeah it’s like 7 Tasmania having an even coverage of North and South, since Tasmania’s population is more spread out than other states (plus the station originally being in Launceston helps). Also helps the ABC has got some decent presenters down there like Helen Shield, Mel Bush, etc.

On another note about Tasmania, Christopher Lawrence will be filling in on Evenings on Tuesday and Wednesday, with AFL airing on Friday.

And who doesn’t enjoy Christopher Lawrence…

I travel north south abit and the observations I would make is this in regards to breakfast/drive in Tassie.

Hobart breakfast is quite left leaning and political, where as the northern edition is more ‘entertainment’…

I would also make the same observation about drive. The Hobart edition is arguably entertainment based but does seem to have green councillors, and state politicians on speed dial, and they get a reasonably easy run…

Does anyone know where in TAS the feed switches from north to south etc? eg. which one do places like Queenstown and Swansea get which are sort of in between Hobart and Launceston?

I thought both got North Tas but it looks like the West Coast gets the Hobart stations like the TV services (yet is included in North West Tasmania/Northern Tasmania for everything else!)
It looks like Swansea gets both by being able to receive ABC Northern Tasmania on the Bicheno frequency and they have their own ABC Hobart Swansea frequency.

Programming wise Hobart doesn’t really cover anything outside of Hobart whereas North Tas covers everything around the rest of the state including often West Coast things so there must be some who listen there as there’s also quite a lot of people who do travel daily from say Burnie to work down the coast. Many of the people on the West Coast however do listen to their 7XS local service though as that is a lot more local for them than anything else and they’re a unique bunch down that way!

AFAIK, Queenstown etc. get the ABC North Tas feed from Lonnie?

Yeah, could be. I was going by the ABC frequency finder and it was telling me Hobart instead of North Tas but trying to think back when I was going down there for work years ago it could have been that they were getting North Tas radio which does make a lot more sense for them.

Thanks! That never used to tell me which Local Radio feed you got, can see it does now!

Yeah took a little while to find as many of the things now point you to using the Listen app instead but was actually pretty good seeing that now.

Brisbane TV weekend news presenter doing Sydney radio mornings?

Yep she mentioned at the start of Yesterday’s program that she flew down from Brisbane for the week.

Usually Suzanne Hill fills in for Sarah Macdonald. Fran Kelly and Emma Crowe have also previously filled in.

How strange.

From memory (and happy to be proved wrong), ABC TV is a statewide feed with ABC radio being the ‘local radio’ on the TV audio streams, with a ABC North Tas and Hobart audio stream available on VAST only.

Radio is North Tas on all TX sites except Triabunna, 936 AM Hobart, and DAB in Hobart.

ABC have landline feeds to strategic locations to divide up the North Tas radio feeds for disaster coverage. EG they can push bushfire info onto the East Coast sites and flood info onto the west.

Yep which means viewers who get digital TV reception only get ABC Hobart, but viewers with VAST get both stations.

Yep, I recall something about them being available for TX site disaster recovery, EG, you could put a VAST service for the right area to air locally if required, if the site had the right SAT RX equipment.

I think also this is how some of the smaller self-help sites get their inputs, VAST, and then broadcast their appropriate program. Triple J, Local or Classic.

Yep, ABC TV seems to only be the one statewide feed and the channel 25 is only ABC Hobart statewide as in other states where it’s the capital city one.

Very interesting both of those! Good to know.

For many years, ABC-TV use to have separate metro and state-wide regional feeds for each state and territory (except the ACT for obvious reasons). The only difference between the feeds was that metro stations would get local ABC Radio promos.

Nowadays, each state has a singe feed, with metro ABC Radio ads going to air in regional areas, including metro Breakfast.
