###When TV Was Awesome - iview Exclusive

Available Now

Old-school TV with a twist

This side-splittingly funny new 10-part series features television shows selected from the goldmine that is the ABC archive. Mastermind, Harry Butler in the Wild and Patrol Boat are just some of the gems that have been dusted off and creatively re-voiced, giving them the comedy makeover they deserve.

These short, sharp vignettes are from the imaginative and outrageous mind of award-winning comedy writer and performer Jason Marion (Rove Live, Dirty Laundry Live)

Episodes of When TV Was Awesome include:

• Bastard! – the game show where contestants must endure as many insults as they can to win.
• Man Boat – All hell breaks loose when a ship’s captain releases a rat to boost morale.

• Pumpkin Phun Tonight – before A Current Affair there was Pumpkin Phun.

• Harry Butler Gone Wild: Food – Hungry Harry is having a very bad day in the bush…

• Pastamind - 70s quiz show where the answer is always ‘pasta’. How hard could it be…?

When TV Was Awesome is an hilarious reimagining of our television history- irreverent, funny, satirical and sharable.

###F*CKING ADELAIDE

OUTSTANDING AUSTRALIAN CAST COMMENCES MAKING A LONG STORY SHORT WITH CLOSER PRODUCTIONS’ F*CKING ADELAIDE

An outstanding Australian cast has been announced for F*CKING ADELAIDE, a 6-part comedy drama series for ABC iview . Headlined by AFI, Helpmann and Green Room Award-winning Australian icon Pamela Rabe (Wentworth, Cosi), Tilda Cobham-Hervey (52 Tuesdays, Barracuda, The Kettering Incident, Hotel Mumbai), Kate Box (Rake, The Little Death), and singer, songwriter, actor, Brendan McLean (The Great Gatsby, Tracks). Production commenced this week in - you guessed it - Adelaide.

F*CKING ADELAIDE is the new production from Closer Productions, the creative South Australian team and SAFC Seed company behind the groundbreaking and internationally award winning feature film 52 Tuesdays.

Commissioned by the ABC and Screen Australia through their Long Story Short initiative, F*CKING ADELAIDE was one of 6 successful projects out of 290 applicants. The series has received dditional funding from the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC).

ABC will premiere F*CKING ADELAIDE online on its iview platform in 2017

Three close but disparate siblings reunite in Adelaide. But when they discover their mother is selling their childhood home, their middle class freedoms and sense of security is rocked and they are forced to confront a past that none of them can let go of. Each 12 minute episode is told through the unique point of view of one of the characters.

F*CKING ADELAIDE is directed by Sophie Hyde, produced by Rebecca Summerton and Sophie Hyde and written by Matthew Cormack and Matt Vesely.

Director/Producer Sophie Hyde said “It’s a total delight for me to work with this stunning ensemble cast and to be creating this funny, and at times heartbreaking series in our home- town and alongside the crew we know and trust. It’s refreshing to reclaim the jokes about Adelaide and laugh at ourselves while utilising all the things we relish about this city and speaking to the experience of family and home. We are also thrilled to partnering with our investors to create work for ABC’s ever more exciting digital platform ABC iview, which gives us the opportunity to be playful with the episodic form and allows audiences to watch whenever they want”

“The competition for Long Story Short was about as fierce as any funding round ever gets,” said Mike Cowap, Investment Manager, Screen Australia. “The Closer team shone through with this moving, profound, and hilariously well-observed story about family and place, ably supported by their rich body of previous work.”

Said ABC Head of Comedy Rick Kalowski, “F*cking Adelaide is one of the most innovative, sophisticated scripted shows ABC iview has yet commissioned, from one of the most talented production teams in the country. We’re thrilled to continue our collaboration with Screen Australia Multiplatform, and to renew ours with The South Australian Film Corporation, with whom we hope to work frequently in the next few years”.

CEO of the South Australian Film Corporation, Annabelle Sheehan said “Closer Productions is an innovative filmmaking collective who are part of a distinctly South Australian new wave of filmmakers. Their work represents a unique creative voice in the Australian screen landscape. Being selected as one of 6 projects from almost 300 applications confirms how dynamic and compelling South Australian stories are.”

All key creatives and Heads of Department are South Australian. The series will shoot from early December through to mid-January on location in Adelaide and South Australia.

###Three new comedies exclusive to ABC iview: Goober, Almost Midnight and Lost in Pronunciation

Three new 6 x 5minute narrative comedy web series, Goober, Almost Midnight and Lost in Pronunciation – all collaborations between ABC and the South Australian Film Corporation - will launch exclusively on ABC iview during the Christmas/New Year week. The series showcases new South Australian screen talent both on and behind the camera.

Goober is about Harry (Brendan Williams), a too-friendly Uber driver, convinced that every passenger will be his next best friend. Harry is on the autism spectrum, and spends his days bemusing and confusing his passengers - despite the support of his dad (Shane Jacobson), always just a hands-free phonecall away with encouragement and wisdom.

Harry is eternally optimistic, especially when it comes to Wendy (Ashton Malcolm), who works in the booth at Harry’s favourite drive-thru restaurant. Harry is convinced that any day now he and Wendy will be happily married. With a house. And six children. And a dog. All he has to do is summon the courage to talk to her about something other than ice-cream.

Goober comes to iview on Boxing Day. Written by Ben Crisp. Produced by Kirsty Stark. Directed by Brendon Skinner and Simon Williams. The show is from Epic Films - Screen Producers Association of Australia’s 2016 Breakthrough Business of the Year.

Almost Midnight is a coming-of-age romantic comedy, with each of the six episodes set a year apart against the backdrop of that glorious moment when boundless promise and uninhibited drunkenness combine – the final five minutes of New Year’s Eve. Dave (co-creator/writer and director Stephen Banham) wants a fairy-tale romance, but lacks the ability to meet or, more importantly, keep the woman of his dreams, Jen – especially when he’s hampered by the appalling advice of his best friend and self-professed ladies’ man, Acka (co-creator/writer Aaron Casey). Over six New Year’s Eves, we witness Dave’s growth from a bumbling wall-flower to a fully-matured man, comfortable in his own skin and ready for love. But when the clock strikes midnight, will he get his wish or turn into a pumpkin?

Almost Midnight comes to iview on Boxing Day. A We’re Not Boys Production. Producers: Alex Keay and Peta Bulsara.

Lost in Pronunciation is a ‘fish out of water’ comedy series from the award-winning and fast-rising comedian, Venezuelan born Ivan Aristeguieta. It premieres Sunday 1 January on ABC iview.

Lost in Pronunciation is the autobiographical story of a young man who escapes the dangers of Venezuela only to find himself in ‘the lucky country’s’ safest, friendliest state – South Australia. With the help of two Aussie housemates, lesbian tradie Tia (Lori Bell), and her hipster vegan brother Scott (Nic Krieg), Ivan learns that to become a permanent resident isn’t so much about ticking boxes on a form, but adapting to the strange and unique customs that we may take for granted, but make us truly Australian. Created and written by Ivan Aristeguieta and Chris McDonald. Produced by Julia DeRoeper. A collaboration between ABC iview, the South Australian Film Corporation and JDR Screen

###Trip for Biscuits - 18 x 10 minute episodes

From Friday 3 March 12:00am

Trip for Biscuits is a fast paced disaster-comedy series that follows Bajo and his misfit crew as they try to carry out their bizarre missions, while Bajo pursues his quest to find his missing parents. CAST: Stephen O’Donnell.

I was watching Stargazing Live & switched for Back to Earth and saw an awful promo on ABC2 claiming that iView was HD, just looked on a web browser and it didn’t look HD to me. Their FAQ says they’re trialling higher res on Apple TV & PlayStation 4 but still not at 720p, so not actually HD, let alone Full HD.
Hopefully they will make HD available soon but provide an easy way for low data cap users to manually select a lower quality picture to save data (I’m thinking particularly of the rural areas on wireless & satellite).

Is that Katering Show one? I always thought she says highrish definition, taking the puss. But yes, awful promo…

Yes that’s it. At first I wasn’t paying attention to it (waiting for the next programme to start) & thought I heard something about iView & definition, then thought “Is this a pisstake?”, or a person with some sort of disability, or someone’s pathetic idea of funny.

##abc Partners with AFTRS on ABC iview Initiative

Cannes Film Festival special available on ABC iview from Monday 15 May

ABC and The Australian Film Television & Radio School (AFTRS) are pleased to announce a content partnership that will feature work from students past and present on ABC iview.

The first program coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival where AFTRS alumni have had considerable success over the past four decades, including acclaimed writer/director Jane Campion who this year has been invited back to the Festival to screen her 1986 Palme d’Or winning short Peel and her new series Top of the Lake: China Girl.

Peel, made while Jane was an AFTRS student, will lead the program which will also include five other films from alumni who have gone on to have their work screened at Cannes - Gillian Armstrong (One Hundred A Day), Ivan Sen (Warm Strangers), Shirley Barrett (Cherith), Sue Brooks (The Drover’s Wife) and Cate Shortland (Joy).

A new season of films will be released regularly and will also include never before seen footage of AFTRS alumni in their student days, including rare interviews.

“We are thrilled to partner with the ABC to launch this content partnership on iview. We hope it will become a must-see destination for lovers of Australian film. It’s a great avenue for AFTRS to showcase our students’ work, and for us to curate classic early films and interviews from AFTRS alumni who have gone on to recognition as some of Australia’s foremost filmmakers,” said Neil Peplow, CEO of AFTRS.

David Anderson, Director of Television, ABC said, “As the independent source of Australian conversations, culture and stories, the ABC is delighted to be partnering with AFTRS to bring this unique content to iview. These remarkable archival films and rare interviews promise to be an exciting addition to iview and we look forward to the opportunity to provide a platform for students to showcase their films."

It appears as that iView has finally updated their video player!

COLLECTIVE NOUN, Directors Zach Mander, Michael Parente, Writers Zach Mander, Dom Fay.
Collective Noun is rebooting the ABC to be more relevant to millennials. This series of sketches will see the ABC line up adjusted to be more Gen Y focused. The ABC will have more smashed avo, more ride sharing services, and be more self-interested – just how millennials like it.

FREUDIAN NIP, Producer Bronte Rose Jovevski, Director Jenna Owen, Victoria Zerbst, Bronte Rose Jovevski, Writers Victoria Zerbst, Jenna Owen, Jess Bush, Geraldine Viswanathan.
Freudian Nip is a comedy collective from Sydney, and a champion high school cheerleading squad. After discovering its previous captain stole all their best routines from an inner-city school, they must scramble to compete at this year’s championships. May the best moves win.

HEADSWAPSIES, Producers Bec Schultz, Writers/Directors Mitch McTaggart, Djovan Caro.
Two stupid scientists swap heads in a vain attempt to advance medicine, but instead just lose control of their bodies.

IBIS QUEEN, Producers Melody Ha, Anna Bateman, James Hackett, Directors/Writers Nick Simpson, James Hackett.
The polar ice caps have melted, and the Ibis Queen is a floating cruise ship that offers a world of infinite activities and entertainment. Captain Caveri is the debauched master of misrule on this vessel. She needs to watch her back as diving instructor Numa is trying to recruit the struggling musician Paul to help her sink the Ibis and create an aquatic haven for transgender dugongs.

KOALA MAN, Producer/Director/Writer Michael Cusack.
Koala Man is about a local suburban superhero with no special powers but a strong and burning passion to snuff out petty crime and bring order to the community. Patrolling the streets in his 91’ Toyota Corolla, Koala Man is constantly on the lookout for trouble makers.

LEFTOVERS, Producer Mark Ruse, Director Andrew Mills, Writers Pippa Mills, Helena Ruse, Andrew Mills. Already world-weary in their early twenties, Pippa and Helena are a couple of young people struggling not to constantly embarrass themselves. Based on the experiences of its two stars and creators, Leftovers finds the satirical in the mundane lives of young people.

LET’S BREAK EM UP, Producer/Director/Writer Nath Valvo, Tandem Media.
Nath Valvo will hit the streets of Australia, hunt down unsuspecting couples and put their love to the test. If they pass the game they win nothing, if they lose they have to break up.

MARS 500, Producer/Director/Writer Lewis Hobba.
Mars 500 follows six astronauts pretending to travel to Mars in a fake space shuttle in Australia’s red centre. Their task is to answer a simple but important scientific question: can six people live in a tiny space shuttle for the time it takes to fly to Mars and back without killing each other? Inspired by real world events, Mars 500 tells the story of a ridiculous yet noble journey to nowhere, and the idiots who signed up for it.

NO-ONE SUSPECTED THE CAT, Producer Doug Bayne, Director Trudy Cooper, Writers David Collins, Rebecca De Unamuno, Carlo Ritchie.
Three improvisers enter a sound studio, three animated films come out. What will they even be about? We
don’t know. Perhaps we never will.

THE ANGUS PROJECT, Producer Craig Anderson, Alessandro Zotti, Nina Oyama, Director/Writer Nina Oyama. Angus Thompson is a 20-year-old wheelchair bound university student with cerebral palsy who lives by himself in Bathurst NSW. Cerebral Palsy is a disease which affects motor skills, but not the brain, so Angus employs other students as disability carers to help him eat, study and clean…but most importantly, to help him party. This webseries is about Angus and his carers, and the hedonistic shenanigans they get up to.

THE BIG DAY, Producers Laura Hughes. Carolina Sorensen, Director Bryan Moses, Writers Laura Hughes, Bryan Moses.
The Big Day is a series of 3 connected sketches that celebrate the ridiculous people who manage to make someone else’s wedding all about themselves. Laura Hughes will be bringing to life all three hilarious characters; the suffocatingly considerate bridesmaid, an aggressively enthusiastic groomsman, and the self- proclaimed ‘fun mum’ of the bride. Cast includes: Shari Sebbens and Christiaan Van Vuuren.

THE LOST TAPES, Producers Penny Greenhalgh, Stef Smith, Josh Ladgrove, Director Stef Smith, Writers Penny Greenhalgh, Josh Ladgrove.
The Lost Tapes is an offbeat, unconventional comedy starring Penny Greenhalgh and Josh Ladgrove. The three sketches shot as fake ‘forgotten archival footage’ from various eras and genres; so wonderfully bizarre and funny you might just believe they’re real.

TIGER COPS, Producer Maria Tran, Director/Writer Adrian Castro.
Two mismatched cops Inspector Tiger (Maria Tran) and Detective Wombat (Steven Oliver) are on a mission to take down a Hong Kong crime lord, The White Ghost.

TOO PRETTY TO BE WITTY, Producer/ Director Petra Lovrencic, Producer/Writer Fiona Gillman.
A pop song about a basic bitch, a movie trailer starring Hollywood’s most stereotypical cast, and a dating game show for the career-driven independent woman. In Too Pretty To Be Witty, Fiona Gillman plays three different “types” of women, satirising the generalisations created for them by modern media and society.

TRUE MURDER, Producer Erasmo Raimundo, Director Greta Lee Jackson, Writers Cameron James, Becky Lucas.
Every year hundreds of murders go unsolved - until now. Each episode, True Murder attempts to solve the most bloodcurdling, notorious (and 100% made up) crimes in Australian history. And every time, they fail embarrassingly and miserably.

UNSYNCED, Producer Mitchell Stanley, Director Peter Nizic, Writer Johnny Lahoud.
To fulfil his lifelong dream of winning a gold medal in Synchronised Swimming at The Games, Stanley
Cummings spent the last 5 years living as a woman… until it all came flopping out.

WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS?, Producers/Directors Adam Murfet, Jesse Oldfield, Writers Naomi Higgins, Humyara Mahbub, Mark Samual Bonanno.
Why Are You Like This? is about two girls, Penny and Mia, who always say the wrong thing. As they inadvertently dissect the dark side of human nature - premises that are often taboo - they swiftly move through social interactions, leaving destruction in their wake, with anyone they come across being forced to pick up the pieces. Why Are You Like This? is a dark, dialogue comedy that is unforgivingly harsh, punchy and sharp.

WOES, Producers Madeline Kelly, Julia Corcoran, Directors Yasmin Suteja, Claudia Allison, Writer Kai Suteja. A comedy about two millennial misfits stuck in a perpetual state of irresponsibility.

Neither Insiders, Offsiders or ABC News Vic have been uploaded to iView today. Weird, any one have a thought as to why?

I have noticed a delay a few times earlier in the year as well. Strange.

A lot of white people there.

The Housemate

New online comedy series coming to ABC iview, Facebook and YouTube in 2018

image

Heartbreak, heartache and extra rent; who will be…The Housemate?

ABC and Screen Australia and are excited to announce The Housemate, a new online comedy series from Chips and Gravy Films, premiering on ABC iview later this year.

Created, written by and starring talented new creative duo, Alexandra Keddie and Gemma Bird Matheson, The Housemate online pilot was an instant hit with Facebook fans in 2017, receiving widespread media attention and acclaim.

In this new full online series adaptation, definitely not based on The Bachelor, best mates Alex and Gemma get to know a host of potential housemates over several weeks, eliminating them from the competition one by one until they finally find the new housemate of their dreams.

Through heartbreak and heartache, Alex and Gemma learn who is ready to put themselves on the line for an affordable room in inner-east Melbourne, featuring good light and easy access to public transport and shops.

ABC Head of Comedy Rick Kalowski said, “The Housemate was one of our most joyful recent online comedy discoveries, and we’re delighted to be making a full digital series of it with the incredibly talented new creator-writer-performer team of Alex Keddie and Gemma Bird Matheson. Here’s hoping this is but their first collaboration with us at ABC and our partners at Screen Australia."

Dynamic duo, Alexandra and Gemma also said, “It’s been a pretty surreal experience to be able to create our own work; especially to have the opportunity to share our silly story with a wider audience. Our mums are really proud."

Rosie Lourde, Investment Manager of Online Production at Screen Australia said “Gemma and Alex successfully demonstrated their capacity to build an online audience for The Housemate when they racked up 264,000 views for the teaser trailer. This commission is an opportunity we’re very pleased to support.”

The Housemate is a Chips and Gravy production with principal production investment from the ABC and Screen Australia in association with Princess Pictures.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, ABC has bought the rights to British drama Killing Eve, made for BBC America and starring Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy). It has been renewed for a second season.
