AACTA Awards

Nominations for the 9th AACTA International Awards have been announced.

At the awards last week, there was an award for “Best Asian Film”. I know they are there, due to sponsorship, but shouldn’t that award be part of these International Awards?

Why do they waste their time on an separate International Awards when the domestic show is so rubbish now? They need to concentrate on fixing up the regular awards show.

Looks like the 2020 AACTA Awards will go ahead, going by their website. But no date has been given yet by the looks of it though.

But they are looking for entries - in both the television and film categories. Films are to have been run between 22 November 2019 and 25 November 2020.

Television Programs awards for the next awards are: Best Drama Series; Best Telefeature or Mini Series; Best Comedy Program; Best Entertainment Program; Best Factual Entertainment Program; Best Lifestyle Program; Best Documentary or Factual Program and Best Children’s Program. Simple.

I couldn’t find if any “Foxtel Programs Categories” are included this year, but i assume they are, as they have been for the previous few years, and are still the sponsors.

If they can air these awards (at some capacity), then surely the Logies could have done so too? lol

Good idea of having this concept, and having Reg Grundy and his name involved.

Also, I wonder how this years Awards will be held. It’s usually held in early December.

For the film categories - sadly, i think it will be lackluster. Not many films available on the big screen, with most to be viewed online. Then again, not many people watch Australian films anyway on the big screen (bar myself and a handful… lol). The television awards will probably be okay though. Enough shows aired in 2020 to fill the genre categories.

This year’s industry luncheon, at which Craft awards in film and television are announced, will be streamed live on Foxtel on November 27. The main awards will be held on November 30, with highlights to be shown on Seven two days later.
A new category, AACTA Audience Choice Awards, will be introduced, determined by public vote.

The awards delayed by two days? Why is there always an edited version? They wonder why Australians dont watch Aussie content if networks dont give a rats…

Agree that the Seven broadcast should happen on the same day as the ceremonies. However, editing needs to occur this year by virtue of the awards being split into two parts/sittings

A good list of nominatioms overall for the television awards. The ABC (and stan) are the big winners.

The Heights is up for Best Drama Series. Glad that this little gem is nominated (despite its low ratings). I am happy thay Halifax is there too. But they’re up against some big dramas, like Bloom, Mystery Road and Wentworth. Nine’s Doctor Doctor rounds up the noms.

A new award has been added - the Best Comedy Entertainment Program award. Drunk History and Micallef’s Mad as Hell are up against 3 stand-up comedies from Amazon and stan.

A good mix of nominations across the tv awards.

ABC’s Stateless leads AACTA Award nominations

ABC drama Stateless leads the list of nominees for this year’s AACTA Awards, the nation’s top screen entertainment prizes.

The powerful six-part series – co-created by Cate Blanchett, Tony Ayres and Elsie McCredie – is in the running for 18 television screen awards, closely followed by 14 nominations for the second season of ABC Indigenous drama Mystery Road; which has received a record number of AACTA Award nominations over the past decade.

ABC programs and people received more than 80 AACTA Award nominations in total across over 30 categories – eclipsing other broadcasters. The ABC celebrated a clean sweep of the six Best Children’s Program Award nominations – including for NITV co-commission Little J And Big Cuz. The ABC also scored three Best Comedy Series nominations for Black Comedy, Rosehaven and At Home Alone Together.

Michael Carrington, ABC Director of Entertainment & Specialist, said the ABC was proud to be recognised across multiple genres. “After a challenging year of disruption and disconnection, the ABC has played a critical role in bringing people together to enjoy outstanding Australian talent. This is not the new normal. It has been the practice of the ABC for the past 88 years,” he said.

“The ABC is proud to be the creative voice of Australia. Congratulations to all our AACTA Award-nominated programs, people and partners for this recognition.”

ABC programs in the running for multiple AACTA Awards include children’s programs Bluey and First Day, drama Operation Buffalo, comedy Rosehaven and documentaries Revelation, Maralinga Tjarutja, Love On The Spectrum, Firestarter – The Story of Bangarra and Australia’s Ocean Odyssey: A Journey Down The East Australian Current.

The full list of nominees is available here. Winners will be announced on 6 December.

When the Logies nominations come out, there are dozens of comments here (and news articles) regarding them - both posiitive and negstive - but with the AACTAs noms, there arent that many posts and news articles, which is a shame.

Russell Crowe has become President of the AACTA Awards, with Nicole Kidman becoming Vice President of the awards. Geoffrey Rush has officially stepped down as his role as the President.

Also, Seven has schduled the awards for Wednesday 2 December at 8.30pm, for a 90 minute broadcast. Last Cab to Darwin follows the telecast (its a great Aussie film of 2015).
