A Voice to Parliament - News Coverage

According to the various station websites, Nine Radio will have localised coverage of the referendum count, and different timeslots across the network.

2GB/4BC 6pm-10pm AEDT hosted by weekday evening host John Stanley

3AW 6pm-8pm AEDT hosted by weekday morning host Neil Mitchell

6PR 4pm-7pm AWST hosted by weekday drive host Oliver Peterson

3AW’s coverage stands out as being quite short and ending early. It leads to wondering if Neil, who only has a couple months left on 3AW, didn’t want to stay later? Or if 3AW management are confident in an early result and think standard lighter Saturday night programming will rate better than lengthy analysis of a result?

According to the Foxtel guide, Sky News coverage runs from 10am to 11pm, with Sky News Extra (aka Sky News The Voice Debate) simulcasting.

The guide strangely has coverage continuing on Sky News Extra until midnight while Sky News runs Newsnight from 11pm.

But the absolute highlight is that from midnight, Sky News Extra is replaying the evening count coverage. Forget counting sheep, re-counting ballot papers is the new insomnia cure!

This was interesting, Brooke from the today show even said “NBN News” in this promo!

So they basically said “this coverage is brought to you by NBN News”.

Would have preferred less Dan Bourchier to be honest.

Also am a bit over ABC abandoning local news on election nights etc.

I might watch the Sky News coverage and treat us as just a comedy show but I think I will stick with abc for serious discussions and for results coming in.

Justin Stevens, ABC Director, News: “The ABC’s referendum coverage has been outstanding. We’ve done our job as the national public broadcaster: impartially presenting a diversity of perspectives; facilitating respectful discussion and debate; providing explanation and context; reporting the key stories accurately and fairly; investigating issues and bringing them to the public’s attention; and delivering compelling, original storytelling to our audiences from around the country.

“All ABC teams involved in covering this story have made a valuable contribution and demonstrated the depth and breadth of coverage the ABC can deliver from more than 60 locations around the country.

“Our coverage has been elevated by the leading role played by our incredible First Nations journalists. Their contribution to the ABC has never been more important than during this campaign – and for many months leading up to it. Under sometimes very difficult circumstances their work has been exceptional – authoritative, accurate and impartial. The ABC is incredibly proud of them and their work.

“They have also helped elevate Indigenous voices throughout our coverage. We’ve never before seen and heard from so many First Nations people across all ABC platforms. This is a demonstration of what we can achieve and how we aim to continue: fully representing all voices and views in our nation.

“Our coverage has at times been criticised by both the ‘Yes’ and the ‘No’ campaigns for overly representing or ‘platforming’ the other. In reality, ABC coverage heard from, scrutinised and interrogated both.

“We will continue to do this on voting day, and beyond, without fear or favour.”
